Excellent story! As an avid golf fan and player, it is always good to see stories about folks few know about. Very timely from my perspective - touugh to find anything on golf outside the BIG guys and gals . . .

Oh I knew that my post about Harmon would be denied. The D News can't actually deal with the truth. Besides...the opening of the unamed Daily Herald sportswriter who came at the last minute when he realized that BYU's golf team actually had a chance to pull out a championship was just too good and too much to pass on. So I had a little fun with my friend. I've known him for a long time.

What about Jim Tressel?

Fun to go down memory lane. Amazing to see all the names that made an impact on the pro circuit. BYU has a ton of great history. Nice article.

10 NCAA titles in all sports. Not bad for a "nobody" school.

DOES show that BYU is relevant!

As far as national relevance, you can add BYU's NIT basketball titles to that total, as the NIT was the premiere basketball tournament back then.

More to come!

Hedgie...the spell has finally been broken. There is "Joy" after all in Ann Arbor. Jim Tressel resigned and he's taking his 9-1 wins against Michigan with him. Word has it that there's an opening for him at USC...seems Logical...after all Pete, Reggie and OJ have proven that you can just about get away with anything at USC or in L.A. ...including murder. He's already placed an order for several dozen Welcome to the PAC Utah!!! doormats. Must be planning big things. Maybe those mediocre Busted BCS rings will actually be worth something eventually when they get rid of the system that cheats real National Champions. I'm sure Tressel will be able to tell you.

Yawn! It must be a slow day in sports. Those that continue to talk about past accomplishments usually are the insecure among us. I bet its the Independence thing.

You mean like the Utes when they keep talking about their 2 BCS bowls or their basketball program when it was good?

Fans bragging about their school's past accomplishments is one thing. But having a sports writer writing an article about a school's past accomplishments is pathetic. Its like byu has nothing to play for anymore, so they reminisce.

At least BYU has a past to reminisce about. Even without being in a conference, BYU will probably win about as many conference championships this next decade as Utah will.

Like when they print those articles about utah winning the ncaa basketball tournament in 1944? We get at least one of those every year.

Considering sorenson is a utah homer I highly doubt he is trying to do anything to pump up BYU.

"Those that continue to talk about past accomplishments usually are the insecure among us."

Like when Utah fans beat their chests about all of the championships the Red Rocks have won, even though the Lady Utes haven't won a national championship since 1996?

The Utes are heading to the self-proclaimed "conference of championships" pretending that they have a vast aray of national championships to contribute to the mix, when in fact, the only "championships" the Utes have are:

Women's gymnastics (last championship 1996)
Skiing (which absolutely NOBODY except the four or five teams that compete care about)
NCAA basketball 1944 (which wasn't even a national championship)

Yet, the jealous ones on the hill whine every time an article is written about BYU's past national champions, which are much more meaningful and prestigious than anything the Utes have ever won.

The Utah men have never won a national championship without the aid of the Utah women.

Pretty sure Sorensen mainly covers Utah. Why he is writing about BYU's first championship is really unknown. I didn't know golf was their first championship...that's cool. Who knew that sport had some value to it!?

He probably wrote it because it is the 30th anniversary of the event, it was his first road trip as a sports writer, and the NCAA golf championships are beginning/ finishing up. There were probably no Cougar fans involved in initiating the story and there were probably no ute fans harmed in the printing of the story.

@All the Utah Trolls

Legacy Programs do look back, and live in the present and they also look ahead.

BYU has a Legacy Hall.....because they have one (Legacy).

You can see a Heisman Trophy, Outlands, Davey O'Briens, Sammy Baugh's, Doak Walker and MaCarthur Trophies.

Consensus All-American Citations. College Hall of Famers.

You can see BYU's own, (32 of which played in Super Bowls), one of which was an NFL MVP twice, (Jim Thorpe Trophy is pretty cool) Super Bowl MVP, 5 Trophies from the 1984 National Football Championship team, including the Waterford Chrystal Trophy.

NCAA National Championships in Football, Track and Field, Basketball(NIT), Football, Rugby (College Premier), Cross Country, Volleyball, Golf.....Pretty well rounded.

Scores and Scores of All-Americans. A couple were NPOY in Basketball, also former Cougars which won the US Open, Masters, British Open etc.

Coaches of the Year in many sports.

Sorry if this offends you Utes.

But you should visit BYU's Legacy Hall sometime, it's free.

See what a Truely "National Legacy" Program is all about. See what 50 years of Excellence produces.

It will give the U of U "Legacy Closet" something to aspire to.
