I am glad there are some congressmen on their toes. Why wasn't any of the news media involved or informed of this expiration date?

It is time the Patriot Act be terminated as most laws dealing with wars and war time needs. The Patriot Act is unconstitutional and severed its purpose to stop foreign terrorist, except from Mexico.

With all the troops coming home from the Middle East it means they are no longer the threat they were when this act was enc acted. The FBI, NSA, TSA, Homeland Security, etc, offices have served their purpose now its time to get back to normalcy in our nation.

To continue with this Patriot Act will be handing the spy agency's federal approval to continue spying on the American citizens. The wars have cost us more than enough and its time to end it all, even the spying.

If the Democrats haven't got their ducks in a row over the Patriot Act I see no need to rush into a 4-year extension of a bad law.

Thank goodness for a few Republicans who are willing to protect our rights.

Why all the fuss about the patriot act? We are at war, people and we need to monitor our enemies that want to murder you! Don't call Al Qaida or the Taliban and you won't be "listened in on". Where is the outrage against Democrat Presdents who did far more "violating" civil rights in the past?

'Thank goodness for a few Republicans who are willing to protect our rights.' - Rifleman | 6:33 a.m.

And yet, the Republican party voted IN the Patriot Act.

'This Day in History: PATRIOT Act signed into law' - Melissa Green - Liberty Central - 10/26/10

'On October 26, 2001 President George W. Bush signed the Patriot Act into law.'

Votes:

Votes on initial Patriot Act: 10/24/2001
Republicans: 211 in favor 3 Against
Democrats: 145 in favor 62 against.

Thats a majority of Republican votes, 211 too 145.

Patriot Act Renewal: 05/07/06
Republican: 214 For 13 Against
Democrat: 66 For 124 Against

That is ONCE AGAIN, a Republican majority vote on both Patriot Act votes.. 425 Republican votes for 16 against. Democrat votes? 211 votes For the Patriot Act and 186 votes AGAINST the Patriot Act.

Republicans voted FOR the Patriot Act.

214 times more than Democrats.

The Patriot Act is Facist. It's only used to opress us in the name of "Protecting our freedoms". The same thing went on in Nazi Germany after the Reichstag was bombed. But that was staged by the government just like 9/11 was.

Who cares what happened 10 years ago. The fact is that the democrats who opposed this are in no hurry to get rid of this now. They are in league with the republicans to destroy the United States.

How is that a 'fact?'

Obama pulls out over 50,000 troops out of Iraq and he's not in a 'hurry?'

*'Last U.S. combat brigade leaves Iraq' - By Rebecca Santana - AP - Published by DSNews - 08/19/10

'Seven years and five months after the U.S.-led invasion, the last American combat brigade was leaving Iraq, well ahead of President Barack Obama's Aug. 31 deadline for ending U.S. combat operations there.'

Following this logic, what does putting 50,000 troops INTO Iraq mean?

Trying to put blame on 'both sides' is disingenious.

Republicans had control of the House, Senate and Presidency from 2000-2006.

America invaded Afghanistan in 2001. Iraq in 2003.

Now, did the Republican party END our occupation of these countries?

No.

Instead, they 'left it for Obama.'

And now, after pulling 50k troops out of Iraq HE'S not doing 'enough?'

No. I disagree.

Obama can only clean UP the mess the Republican party left America, in.

I say let it expire. There should be no law that exempts officials from honoring the constitution.

Nice to see people comming around.

I couldn't agree more! I have never liked the Patriot Act. Let it go the way of the Dodo.

Anti Bush-Obama,

I completely agree with your 10:28 a.m. post. Looking back, I was harsh in my reply to your 10:31 a.m. post. While I still stand by my point, I should have addressed it better.

For that, I apologize.

How far should be allow the government to go? Should they record every phone call just to verify that nothing is said that angers the powers that be? Should they open every email to make sure that our thoughts match their expectations?

The 4th Amendment says: "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Probable cause BEFORE a warrant is issued.

The Patriot Act is not Patriotic. It has nothing to do with Patriotism. It is all about allowing unfettered violation of the 4th Amendment. It needs careful and thoughtful review and extensive debate

I thought that the Democrats hated the Patriot act. Why are they in such a rush to extend its use? Pagan, can you explain to us why the Democrats want to extend that law's life?

'Pagan, can you explain to us why the Democrats want to extend that law's life?' - RedShirt | 1:23 p.m.

I'm glad you called into question exactly WHO supports the Patriot Act Redshirt.

Votes on initial Patriot Act: 10/24/2001
Republicans: 211 in favor 3 Against
Democrats: 145 in favor 62 against.

Thats a majority of Republican votes, 211 too 145.

Patriot Act Renewal: 05/07/06

Republican: 214 For 13 Against
Democrat: 66 For 124 Against

Thats Republicans with a 201 majority in favor of the Patriot Act

Patriot Act Renewal: 02/14/11

Republican: 210 For and 27 Against
Democrat: 65 For and 117 against

Once again, thats Republicans offering 183 MORE votes in support of the Patriot Act.

Total: 635 Republican votes for 27 against. Democrat votes? 276 votes For the Patriot Act and 303 votes AGAINST the Patriot Act. All three votes to date.

Source? Clerk House Roll Call.

Republicans voted FOR the Patriot Act

all three times.

Majority of Democrats have factually voted AGAINST the Patriot Act Redshirt.

Depsite your claims.

To "Pagan | 2:23 p.m." I didn't ask what they did in the past. I asked why are they now pushing to extend the patriot act. You realize that if the Democrats really hated it as much as they claim, that it would never leave the senate.

So, are you going to answer the question, or just ramble on about something that has nothing to do with the question asked?
