So much for Davis County supremecy in soccer - - Alta played very well from start to finish. Viewmont was tough, but choked down the stretch - - unfortunately for the Viking faithful. Sad to see the beautiful game marred by players melting down. Brighton / Alta matchup in the final should be incredible.
Alta vs Brighton I've heard that before..
I am so grateful for Viewmont High School, its staff and teachers. Three years ago, when my kids participated in sports for Viewmont, there were wins and also looses. But I am so glad to see now what a wonderful young men and women these kids are(my kids and their friends). The 2009 class graduates had spread their wings and taking off to life sucesfully and happily. We as parents, couldn't be more grateful. And I am sure it will happen to this team too.
I was at the game and I compliment Alta for doing what it takes to win. As far as saying that Viewmont choked that is taking something away from Alta. Soccer is a sport that can be cruel and I am in no way taking away from the fact that Alta did what it took to win. However anyone watching that game knows that if those teams played ten times Viewmont would win at least 6 of those ten. Alta got the opening goal break which by the way was a bad call since it was a hand ball on the Alta player before the high kick and scored. The whole rest of the game Alta defended and quit honestly fouled. I can surely understand some of the Viewmont players frustrtation when the tactic of grabbing the jersey or fouling in the midfield was used time and time again to slow down the game by Alta. I also give the ALta players and staff credit for doing what the ref would allow. The defense of Alta on the backline was very impressive and of course their goalie. Good luck in the final.
@tcsoccer
I have read the comments over the year and get quite a kick out of them. Yes, I cheer for Alta and my kids have played soccer there over the years. tcsoccer has been telling us all year about region 1 and how great they are. The fact is that they may be extremely good teams, but given the size of their region, and the fact that they never play anyone outside of the region until the state tournament, no one can validate any of that. Viewmont had a very good team, and deserved to be where they were, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that they win 6 of 10 from Alta. In fact playing essentially a home game for Viewmont on a surface they play on day in and day out, they lost 2-0. Every team has their shot, and a lot of quality teams and players are now sitting home. Alta won, not because of ref's calls or hand balls, but because for whatever reason, they outscored Viewmont. Should be a great game on Thursday.
I stand by comments about Region 1 soccer it was the best from top to bottom but that does not matter anymore because it will all be different next year with the new regions. I wish ALta and Brighton good luck and I sincerely say may the best team win. My son is on Viewmont and we knew going in that it was crucial that Viewmont score first or it would be very difficult to win the game. We knew that ALta has the capability to lock down and play defense which is what they did. Now lets sit back and enjoy the final. And yes you are right that for whatever reason on that day Alta did score more goals. How can a statement like that ever be argued?
Good try Viewmont I still think your the best but soccer is cruel. Now that the season is over I will come clean that my son is on Viewmont and his name is Lucas Cawley number 7. I am very proud of the game that he played against ALta and the way he played the whole year. Not bad for a freshman. I tried to be fair in my posts and predictions and I hope that I never offended anyone. Good luck to all the players as they continue their soccer careers
Oh give me a break tcsoccer.
Year after year the Davis county teams claim to be the best. Year after year the teams from Salt Lake beat up on them in the playoffs. Alta was by far the better team. They had more possesion and more chances to score. The results of the state tournament speak for themselves. Region 2 has two teams in the championship. Region 1 has none.
Alta vs Brighton in the final. Should be another great game. A rematch of 2006. Go Alta
The difference in the game was that Alta knew how to combine and pass their way out of sticky situations. Viewmont just dribbled in circles and hoped a hole would open up. You can't do that against Alta.
The Vikings played a great game. And I understand where their frustration came from: they were playing against a referee that clearly did not want them to win. I didnt think this kind of thing could happen in high school sports, but apparently, it does. But I dont mean to impede on Altas talent, they played a strong game and had a solid defense. But I think it may have been a different game had the Vikings been given a fair chance at playing. But, what can you do? The Vikings played their hearts out, despite some very frustrating setbacks, and have a great season to be proud of. Congratulations to Alta.
That's rediculous the ref did a great job. I was there as a nuetral spectator.
An even dozen thats what we want coach!
Tcsoccer- Your son is a fabulous player, one of the best on the field yesterday. His future is bright. That being said... stop embarrassing him! I too was at the game, I cheered for the Vikes, IMO they had more individual skill but that first goal doomed them, up to that point they looked the better team but from that point on, they seemed to panic a little and were completely out of sorts. That has to be credited to Alta, their back line was solid and other than the one flurry in front of the goal in the 2nd, Viewmont had almost 0 chances. Credit to Alta and quite honestly, until Viewmont wins another title (16 years and counting)their fans need to stop running their mouths about how amazing Viewmont soccer is.
Myself year after year? Come on now last year was two davis county teams in the final. Lets just say the two dominant areas of soccer in this state have been Draper/Sandy and Davis County. However the more time that goes by the more the rest of the state catches up and I would not be surprised someday to see the St George area produce some great teams with the all year weather advantage. As far as the Viewmont versus ALta game debate Alta won and that is the only score that matters but that one result does not completely throw out everything that Viewmont accomplished this year. Every team that won their region is a champion of that Region. Tomorrow we will find out who the State tournament champion is in 4A and 5A. In 4A in could very easily be the third place team from a region. In 5A it will be a team that needed penalty kicks to advance hardly indicating that Region 4 is some how dominant.
2011 Alta/Brighton
2010 Davis
2009 Brighton
2008 Brighton
2007 Jordan
2006 Alta
2005 Jordan
Credit to Fremont and Davis last year. They were the best but that was the exception. 6 of the last 7 state championships are in region 3 and Sandy city. That is what I base my year after year whooping argument on.
As for this year yes it took PK's for Brighton and Alta to advance. But the fact is these Salt Lake area teams keep getting it done whether it's by pk's or any other result. Something only one Davis county team has done in the last 7 years.
I do expect viewmont to rebound and win championships with all of the young talent they have. But for now these Davis county/ region 2 supremacy arguments are laughable.
Wow somehow me giving an opinion on the Viewmont versus ALta game has turned into a Davis County versus the world blog ha ha. I wish everyone the best of luck and may your son, daughter, neighbor have a great experience playing high school soccer. Viewmont and my son had a fun, safe, year and at the end of day that is the most important. I wish you all the best. My guess is that Alta might have a hard time beating brighton again in the final but that is just a guess.
Until next year bye.
I am not sure who grows better soccer teams, I think there are great teams all over the state! The domination by the South end of the valley may have more to do with money than anything else, my children graduated from Alta and my nephew plays for Viewmont. The game yesterday was a hard fought game. As we all know in soccer the best team does not always win, and yesterday was no exception.
My comments were in response to all the hype i heard about the region 2 teams. In my opinion the teams in Davis county talk a lot but don't do a very good job of backing all that talk. It's not Davis county vs the world I was just giving my opinion.
I agree that Alta will have a really tough time beating Brighton twice at Rio Tinto.
Interesting that some think the better team didn't win. I thought Alta was the better team. Viewmont has better players but Alta was better as a team. They dominated Viewmont.
Good season Viewmont maybe next year.
Its weird that tcsoccer can say Viewmont is a better team when they lost 2-0. It looked like Viewmont played for themselves. They dribbled a lot. Alta played together as a team, they played for eachother and held their composure and thats what soccer is all about. Playing for something bigger then yourself.
