That was a nasty injury. From our seats we could see the extent of the injury right away. Hope he heals up soon and can return to the pitch healthy soon. Best wishes Javi.

I think that deserves a 10 game suspension - in order to correspond to the Mullan suspension. Mondaini went straight for the leg and had no chance at the ball. It shouldn't matter where on the field the tackle occurs if the defender recklessly goes at the attacker's legs.

And we hear how soccer is much safer than football. I know some people who sign there kids up for little league soccer because they think it is safer than football. People do all they can to try to be safe in all sports. They however have some degree of injury in them. Need to be careful there. I don't think Soccer is a whole lot safer than football.

Soccer is brutal on the legs, no doubt. But you can't compare that to brain damage that is relatively common in football! And even if you just compare lower body injuries between football and soccer, I'll bet football has as many. Anybody know any stats on the topic?

Best of luck to RSL as they adjust to the situation.

ridiculous, mls needs to crack down on these dirty tackles. 10 games is nothing.

Its not just the game suspension, league needs to make the fine hurt as well.
Center official needed to act sooner in the match to stop the dangerous play.

It was devastating to watch.

I recall reading a study several years ago (at least ten) that showed that baseball topped the list of youth sports injuries and soccer was fairly high on the list. Football was way, way down the list, like eigth. It makes sense since players have pads and helmets that protect them during on-field collisions whereas there is no such protection in soccer or basketball (nor from flying projectiles in baseball).

I imagine as speed and mass dramatically increases at the college and pro levels, then football might move up the charts but I've not seen a study at those levels.

Sad to see a great player sustain that type if injury. I hope he heals quickly and completely. He will be missed on the field.

Deseret News:

For the sake of all of us, round up all those pictures of Javi's foot pointed backwards and burn them. Congratulations to your photographers for getting such wonderfully graphic pictures, but remember that just because you took a photo doesn't mean you have to show it.

Please Javi get well soon. RSL will press forward, but more important is that you heal well so you can get back to the job you do so well.

Wow. RSL has been getting slammed lately, and I'm not just talking about their play either. Andy William's wife has leukemia and it's been a tough week for him and the rest of the team already. With Javi's injury added to all the other woes, they're going to find themselves fighting an uphill battle.

Good thing they're amazing people and players. I hope they get through this slump as quickly and easily as possible.

That was a nasty scene at the game yesterday. It's a sad day for RSL fans. Now we have to go the rest of our season without our star. Chances of winning the supporters shield and MLS cup went way down. Really sad that players have to make late tackles like that. A major suspension needs to happen.

At youth level it is. You hardly see any slide tackling at youth level like occurred here. In adult rec leagues, you want to be careful to specify whether slide tackling is allowed (to my mind, in a rec league, it shouldn't be, but it's a personal preference if you want to take the risk).
