I know im going to get a lot of small town hate for picking private schools, but my prediction is Rowland Hall vs St Joseph in the final. Ive seen most teams from region 14, 17 and 18 and 2 teams from 15 and I just feel that according to the matchups no team from 15 can get through that upper bracket, I dont believe 17 will win a single game, and Millard would have to beat Rowland Hall, who I believe is the best team in the tournament. I pick St Joseph to upset South Summit in the Quaterfinals.
Sorry, I meant st joe upsets so. summit in the semis. I think Millard goes down in the quaterfinals. Gotta pick some upsets to make it interesting :)
Dont worry wacMehoff I feel pretty strongly that the state playoffs will once again show how strong region 1 is. Last year it was Fremont and Davis in the final and this year I expect it will be Viewmont against either Davis or Weber. I watched Davis play Viewmont last week and Davis is still a very good team with some great players. The biggest challenge for region 1 is that the brackets this year have Region 1 and 4 matched up against each other. I would take a fourth place Fremont or a 3rd place davis over any other regions 1 and 2's accept for region 4. Fremont vs Alta and Davis vs Brighton will be great first roiund match ups if region 1 gets four teams to the quarterfinals they will have a great chance of claiming all four semi spots. No disrespect to copper Hills and Bingham but not having to face good teams week in and out is difficult to overcome when you get to state. The same goes for Cottonwood and Murray. Of course best of luck to everyone and you never know in soccer :)
"big boys"? I hope youre kidding? im guessing youre referring to kids from a school with a higher enrollment? im a former 2A coach and sent 4 kids in 3 years to college, meaning they were better than 95% of 5A boys. 2A may not have the quantity of talented player, or even be able to field a full team of "soccer players", but going to a 5A school doesnt make you a "big boy". i played 5A, 3-time all-state, D1 college, USL, NASL, and MLS reserves, so i DO know what im talking about my friend. Im not calling you a "little boy" because youve done nothing but measley high school ball...get off your high horse. Its all soccer man.
Clyde makes a good point. Soccer is soccer and size of the school doesn't matter. This year the leading scorer in the state is the coaches kid at Millard (2A) . . he would probably play for Viewmont or Alta in 5A or Woods Cross or Lehi in 4A or Judge and Juan Diego in 3A if he lived near those schools . . . oh, no, wait a minute . . it doesn't matter where you live anymore along the Wasatch front. If schools want you for a specific sport they just go and recruit you to "transfer" for academic reasons!
No disrespect from me but i will discuss the 4a and 5a becuase those are the teams and players that I do know. I however enjoy reading about 3A, 2A. and 1A. Two great sophomores i do know in 3a are Victor from Ben Lomend and Alejandro from Wasatch who both play with my son on La Roca. Both of them are great players. In the mean time the biggest game in 5A today is Weber at Davis. I predict a Davis win and that will leave those two teams tied for second in Region 1. Who do you want to play Alta and Brighton? I love Weber and they have great players but most teams will want to avoid the defending state champ.
RE:clyde
why no belief in grand. the only team in region 15 that play real soccer.
unlike millard they actually play possession and try to keep the ball. anyone this year could win it. it will come down to whoever has the ball though, and that is something millard won't have.
RE: soccerman#1FAN
Millard didn't have the ball alot this season because it was usually in the back of the opposing teams net. Anyway, if you read clyde's comments he actually picked Millard to lose in the quarters. The only exception I have to that is they would probably be playing Waterford in the quarters. The reigning 2A champs beating a team that has never been past the second round wouldn't be considered an upset in my book. Millard probably has the best team they have ever had, but playoff experience in soccer isn't one of their strong points. There are a number of teams that could win it this year. Should be fun to watch. Good luck to all the teams.
RE: countryboy
i agree that this years playoff's should be fun to watch. millard has had a great season and could probably make a good run this year if they play their cards right. but like you said, with the lack of playoff experience may play into effect.
p.s. the ball was usually in the other teams possesion, the rest of the time it was either being randomly kidked up to your forwards, or in the back of the net.
RE: soccerman#1FAN
I agree other teams play more of a possession game. I guess it's kind of like basketball. You have some teams that like to run the fast break and others like to set up the half court offense. Millard's just more of a fast break kind of team. How that fair's in the playoffs remains to be seen.
Good luck to Grand. Looks like you will probably have St. Joseph in the 2nd round (baring an upset). That will be a tough game, but I will be rooting for you. It's about time a public school won this thing.
Please be advised this is a severe weather alert........ Beware all regions 10, 11, and 12. This is a severe weather warning............Please advise all regions 10, 11, and 12 I repeat this is a severe weather report...... There are thunder storms and hurricanes brewing in the south and heading your way.
re: country boy
just because you guys score a lot doesn't mean that you'll be good in the playoffs. for example. grand last year had the highest team goal differential in 2A. and the year before that the had the highest team goal differential. and we all know how both seasons ended up.
millard doesn't have playoff experience because they lost early. im guessing they lost out early because they play "fast break" soccer. but i think its kind of hard to run a fast break if you never get the ball. you have to have the ball to score. you have to actually play with possession and pass to have the ball. millard is gonna get beat by a very good waterford team that knows how to pass and control the ball.
i think any team with BALL CONTROL can win it this year.
@soccerman. its not that i dont think grand is good, they have a great chance of making a run, its just that they are in with st joe which im picking to make it to the final. as far as the different playing styles, its not about fan-friendly soccer, or who has the most "professional" style that wins it. u gotta do what works for u cuz what it comes down to is the scoreboard. i do favor possesion soccer, as long as u balance it with consistant attacks. Rowland Hall is possesion and So. Summit is run and gun and they split 2 overtime games. i do believe the best all around team is rowland hall because they posses 85% of the game and still put in 5, 6, and 7 goals. incredible team. and no, im not from there.
Hey . . thanks for the warning to all of us us teams up north . . and I believe somebody issued a weather watch about this time last year as well. Did a lot of good because the all powerful Thunder needed a doctor to perform the Heimlich Maneuver for their choke job in shoot outs . . so much for storm warning and home field advantage in the south. Yeah the Scots went all that way to St. George in 2010 and performed quite a nice bit of surgery. While the real weatherman is predicting hot weather this week, perhaps the 2011 version of the Thunder will be improved . . only time will tell, but they will have their hands full with a strong side from Region 11 again and then likely a re-vamped Park City squad that is dangerous.
Viewmont wins region 1 and will be the number one seed from that Region. Now the fight is on for number 2 spot. Davis has to beat or tie Viewmont next week to get the number 2 seed. It is that simple. The question becomes how hard and will Viewmont play all its top players since it has already won the title and number 1 seed? Should be of interest for Brighton, Alta, and Weber.
Copper Hills should jump up in rankings after the win against Bingham and the loss that Brighton had
Hey, DOCTOR SOUTHERN UTAH, how did the Hurricane end up? I heard it was a 5.0 category storm! :)
