Does anyone know what the process for the rankings? Is it a coaches poll? Is it some newspaper guys? Do they have reps from each region or area? Just wondering.
I think its the newspaper guy... one of them. he should be reading these every week, listening and fixing his guess work.. probably doesn't get out of the office would be my guess.
There is no way for the writer to get to all of the games or even enough games to accurately make rankings. The first week's rankings were obviously based off last year's results from the state tournament and they get tweaked a bit each week.
@Nellies
You are right again... except in NCAA college softball, basketball and football, they for sure don't go to every game to determine the rankings.. They rely on the coaches and writers who do see the games, coaches play other teams and know the strengths of the regions and the teams. They don't start the new season out based mainly on final standings from the previous year, (as does the DNews, it sounds like), they establish the first rankings based on the returning players mostly in skilled position on each of the teams. There isn't any reason the DNews or any paper couldn't do the same. They have last year's stats, rosters, and won/lose record and in softball where the pitching is sooo critical they for sure know who is coming back and an idea of the team's strength at that pivotal position. I guarantee you the coaches in each region have a very good idea who the strong teams will be in any given year, at the beginning, baring injuries or other unforeseen circumstances.
