"If ye have faith as a grain of a mustard seed ye shall say unto The Mtn, remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible unto you."
    Matthew 17:20

And to all you delusional Ute fans predicting a win in Provo next year... you are going to get stomped! Norm Chow's next game at LES is going to be similar to his last (59-0, UCLA, 2008). You lost all your playmakers on offense and Harvey Langi is going to get a very rude introduction to D1 football by Fangupo and Kaveinga. It's payback time!! Can't wait! GO COUGARS!!

I have one question. If BYU had been invited to the Pac 10 would they have accepted? Like Utah they would have said Yes in a nano second. How does that reality stack up against Independence. Good luck. You know, I want you to know I was having a bad day but we played the cards we were dealt.

Season looks like a cakewalk. Every game will be important since we have no conference title to play for. We can only win a NC. With such a weak schedule we can only hope for a BCS bowl if we are the only undefeated non-BCS team. I like our chances after watching the growth that the team has shown. Only Texas and TCU have a legit shot at blowing our season, the others need a minor miracle to even make the games close. So here's to a great season of armchair quarterbacking, trolling and outright ridiculousness from fanatics and just plain "got nothing better to do" folks along the Wasatch Range. Good luck to all."

I agree. A total cakewalk. Brocno should seriously consider pulling his first and second strings for all of these games so they will be fresh for the National Championship game.

And that hypothetical 20 mil still will not be enough for utah to catch up to BYU in revenue and spending. LOL

Not to mention utah's athletic department is in the red and BYU is one of only a few in the entire ncaa that runs in the black.

So tell me again how still being behind BYU in revenue and spending, even with that massive influx, is a reason to try and talk smack?

Cheer up Coug fans. We'll just have to endure this season with returning starters at nearly every offensive position while the utes steamroll the nation with an injured QB, an inexperienced rugby player at RB, and all-american WR's that can't catch. We'll also have to endure a defense that finished last year ranked ahead of our (little) brother's defense to the north. It'll be fun to watch as Rice Eccles battles the Huntsman Center for attendance records later in the year.

Yeah... predictable in terms of play calls that protected his QB from the weaknesses of his O-line.

I can't wait to see some unpredictable play calling that exposes young Mr. Heaps to blitzing linebackers and DBs.

I would say that Boise State's prior weak (in conference) schedules has been more of an impediment than a help to their BCS successes. The Broncos usually win vs difficult opponents. Wish they could play more of them. I believe that stronger opponents will improve their performance in all areas. Can't wait for September in Georgia.

Here's what you overlooked in the similarities between the mid-major PAC-10.2 schedule and the MWC. It's called the 'transitional reverse hostess continuum'.

Last year the Utes defeated a few 'cupcakes' in the MWC and this year, the Utes will be defeated as a 'cupcake' in the new PAC reiteration.

    Does that work for you?

    Keep singing "High Hopes".

  • worf Mcallen, TX

Cakewalk? All your top teams have cupcakes or they'll never get to the top BCS games. It's more of the win-lost record that gets you anywhere. Look at Boise State! Didn't Alabama have some cupcakes or Florida?

    Go Utes! Beat Montana!

  • Thlete Draper, UT
    April 25, 2011 3:48 p.m.

@Duckhunter, a "decisive beatdown" of Utah? I'll put a very large sum on Utah +7 this September if you'd like. You do realize that BYU hasn't beaten Utah by more than 7 points since 1996, right?

I understand the excitement for a new season, but your team was what 6-6 last year to squeak into the worst bowl game possible?

LOL at the person who said Utah's "middle of the PAC" PAC-12 schedule is similar to MWC. Mid-bottom MWC teams don't beat Nebraska (UW) or come within a botched PAT of Wisky on the road (ASU). That was the whole problem with that conference was the anchors after Top 3.

Also, to those who are surprised at Utah fans commenting: it's a long offseason and we are just fanatic college football fans. We eat up every Ute article and anything else that might mention or affect our team. Not surprisingly, BYU articles are fun places to banter with a team from the early sched. Of course, the pie in the sky comments are always entertaining. Keep believing that a BCS game is possible when you have no contract.

Uh crb....at least 4 of BYU's opponents this year have been listed in various top 25 polls with BYU being listed in some of them as well. I have seen Texas, TCU, CFU and Utah all listed in at least one poll as top 25 teams and TCU is in some top 10's.

Also your "stats" and "rankings" on Heaps are laughably wrong but I suppose it is one of those things where you think if you post it people will simply believe it. LOL

Look for a decisive beatdown of the utes in Provo this year. You can request for hailstorm to come over and save that comment if you want as she has a Duckhunter file on her computer. She might even had started a scrapbook of me. Of course she won't be able to use those comments in the manner she hopes to but it will be fun waiting fir her to do it and then having exactly nothing ever appear.

Heaps is a good QB but the BYU O-line is still suspect in my opinion especially as run blockers and the BYU D-line got pushed around fairly easily last year. Will Brandon Doman take BYU offense forward or backward to the Crowton style scheme... that remains to be seen. I remember how happy everyone was to get Anae after Crowton and the Y had some excellent years under Anae so I hope Doman's leadership is for real... as I'm sure Bronco does as well. Anyway, I suspect this will all be very clear after a game or two into the season.

  • Benderman1 Layton, UT
    April 25, 2011 2:45 p.m.

Hey CRB...Don't you think some of Heaps' struggles early on had to do with being a true freshman, having to share reps during spring and fall and the first three games of the season, and running a predictable offense under Anae? With all going against him, Heaps did unbelieveably well during the last half of the season and made Wynn look silly in the rivalry game. Seriously, how many times did Wynn throw it into the dirt or toss it out of bounds whenever he felt a little pressure? I think I even saw Wynn crying on the sideline when he got pulled so Cain could play. CRB, I think deap down, you wish you had Heaps over little baby Wynn.

Looking forward to BYU football and basketball in 2011-12. Plan to attend a few games, watch all games on TV, and perhaps buy some BYU merchandise in December.

Very interested in Utah football's future, but not enough to read articles about them or comment on them. That Ute fans continue to read, comment, and offer retorts on BYU-focused articles tells me BYU sports occupy a prominent spot in the hearts and minds of many Utah fans. Strange, but flattering if you're a BYU fan....

I think all of BYU's games are winnable. Its a question of whether or they can stay focussed all season and not get cocky. BYU has played Texas twice in the past, and won both games. No one knows how well Texas will be this year but I think BYU can pull it off. TCU will likely be the toughest matchup- their defense is always stingy! I think that everyone is underestimating how difficult Hawaii will be at home. They've got a good, and very mobile, QB. BYU almost always struggles with mobile QBs. I don't think OSU will be difficult to beat- our defense clobbered them (and they had the Rodgers Bros.) a couple years ago, and our defense will be better this year. Overall, I'm cautiously optimistic of our chances- we have quite a few 'cupcakes' to pad our schedule, but it only gets better from here.

  • CRB Woods Cross, UT

Okay, here we go with the hype again. As usual it isn't just the media or the fans the coach is involved. BYU continues its uncertain (and desperate) sound in football by, touting an experienced returning QB. Humm.... Heaps was the worst Freshman in the country last year (ratings fact) and in the bottom 5 of all D-1 QB's (fact). Proven? Lets just say to improve he will have to be more mobile, be able to throw on the run, be able to accurately throw the 15+ yard pass, finish drives, not lock on receivers, go through progressions and not just throw it AT his first option and make decent decisions in the pocket. Some of these will improve but the fact is that BYU has only occasionaly done well with the immobile QB and Heaps is not the right skill set. Lets not talk about a weak schedule where undefeated will not mean a shot at the BCS and independance means no shot at a Nat Champ game unless they schedule at least 6 top 25 teams and thie year they have, lets count them, ZERO. But it is still better than the MWC.

  • Superfly St. George, UT

Ole Miss has a lot of problems. Way more than BYU does. Why does everyone has us losing to them? They are rotating thru 4 quaterbacks and can't find their idenity. BYU CAN beat Ole Miss. Texas is rebuilding just like BYU is and they too, have lost their coaching staff to Florida. They had a losing record last year as well. But BYU will probably lose that one, it IS Texas after all. I just wanted to say Ole Miss CAN be a win.

I just gotta add that the Cougars going independent was a bigger news story than either Colorado or Utah joining the PAC 10, making it into the PAC 12. Truth! Gosh, how many times have we heard that Utah is going to the PAC 12? I say "GO," please. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. As far as the MWC is concerned, they really showed their true colors by being less than honorable about the way they treated BYU teams, fans, cheerleaders etc the last year they were in the conference. A great example way the BYU-U of U Football game officiating. (It was likle collectively they had a guilty conscience about losing one of their king pins who chose to leave the party.) And for those who are upset about BYU getting some ink, why haven't you complained about the Jazz, Jerry Sloan and D. Williams when they suddenly were all the "latest" news? After all, they don't wear silly looking red and white U's everywhere they go claiming they're the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I put my prediction out there because Honor Code predicted 5-7. Since the season is many moons away I wanted to convey a belief in the coaches, players, cheerleaders, Cosmo and all the true blue BYU fans until an opponent beats us on the field. At this point why not predict an undefeated season and a trip to a BCS Bowl. Set the bar high and the team might respond with a maximum effort. After all we almost beat the mighty Utes (next year a PAC12 self proclaimed powerhouse) last season. So let's get the drum beat going and carry our enthusiasm all the way to Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi. Or, just drop the football nonsense until late August when we find out who is healthy and who is just pretending to be great.

It's laughable when BYU haters proclaim that the DN is BYU biased.

Really? You are just figuring that out? Don't try to make them the bad guys for having a bias.

ALL news organizations have a bias. There isn't a single one out there that is straight down the middle on any issue. Not in Newspapers, TV, radio, or other media.

Welcome to the internet news age. You can go anywhere at any time to get the news you want, with the bias you want.

If you don't like the DN articles, or the content, or the frequency, go get your news from someone who shares your bias.

I am still baffled why anyone would waste time reading an article about a team they hate. Someone please explain that to me. My life is too busy, too full of other things to worry about what Utah, who I could not care less about, is doing.

Barring injuries, this could be a wonderful season. The coaching changes were long overdue and it looks like we have an incredible staff. With Bronco coaching the defense and Brandon the offense, it should be a breath of fresh air.
The so-called "patsies" are balanced out by the likes of powerhouses Texas and TCU. Every team has them (I only wish they were earlier in the schedule!). I hope we are able to get big leads in some of those games so that Riley Jensen can come on and show his stuff as well. He's got to be one of the premier back-up QB's in the nation.
But win, lose, or draw, true BYU fans will be behind the Cougars all the way!

The exact moment that I knew I wouldn't miss the MWC came at the Conference Tournament in Vegas. At halftime of one of the games, all the cheerleaders from all teams came out to do a brief performance. The BYU cheerleaders were roundly booed as they took the floor. Cheerleaders! Good riddance to the jealous haters in the former conference, the pathetic TV coverage, the broken promises and the road trips to Laramie.

Hello to independence, ESPN, Doman and Cahoon. This is gonna be good.

"Utah has onenof the toughest schedules in the country." KamUte

There is not a Top 10 team on Utes schedule. Utes don't even play the two best teams in the PAC12 (Oregon and Stanford). Arizona St. and BYU are probably the only Top 25 teams on your schedule. USC is not able to be ranked. Pitt is picked to finish in the middle of a weak Big East. California, Arizona and Oregon State will be middle of the PAC teams. Colorado, Washington St, Montana St and UCLA are not much better than BYU's WAC opponents. Washington is an unknown, depending on how their rookie QB performs - probably seventh or eighth in the PAC12.

The top six teams on BYU's schedule will be tougher than the top six teams on Utes schedule. TCU is a legit Top 10 team. Texas and UCF will be ranked in the Top 25. Hawaii could break into the Top 25. Oregon State and Ole Miss will finish in the middle of their conferences. San Jose St, Idaho, Idaho St and New Mexico State will provide a lot play time for our 2nd and 3rd team to hone their skills for next year.

ESPN making 15 stops around the country for a month long tour on Spring Football practices.

Tour stops include: TCU, LSU, Florida, Florida State, Alabama, BYU, Arkansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Boise State, UCLA, USC, Stanford and Oregon.

Where is Utah???? Oh wait, no one cares except a small fanbase with a little brother complex.

I don't see why Ute fans think their schedule is so tough. Montana State? Washington State? Colorado? Arizona St? UCLA? The bottom half of the PAC is not much better than the bottom half of the MWC. Of course, Utah will probably be bottom half of the PAC too since it doesn't look like they'll be very good in 2011. In fact, they won't be a threat as long as Wynn is there.

Why would a jealous Wyoming fan even care about BYU's schedule next year?

Playing in the Jerry Dome versus playing in Laramie? Really?

I seriously doubt you could find a single BYU fan who will miss those "exciting" trips to Laramie.

"With Idaho State, Idaho, San Jose State, and New Mexico State on the home schedule I'm sure whatever you have to pay for those tickets will be well worth the price."

It's interesting how your BYU obsession caused you to overlook your own team from that list.

Any game involving BYU is exciting, but being able to watch the Cougars stomp the newly minted PAC 12 Utes will be well worth the price; and as an added bonus, cooking up a little revenge for the Aggies.

When was the last time Utah was able to play SEVEN home games, plus have such stellar road games as Texas, TCU and Ole Miss?

Independence is working out very well for the Cougars!

The cougs to have a good year should go 9-3. The utes to have a good year will need to go 8-4 or even 7-5. MY bet and I'm a utes fan is they will end up 6-6 or 7-5. The key is Wynn. Which Wynn will show up, the run and scream Wynn or the great passer Wynn. I have absolutely no clue.

Heaps "We're not playing of a conference championship. We're playing for a national championship." Slow down there, big fella! I'm all for the Cougs and support them leaving the MWC, but let's take the independence a step-at-a-time. As long as they start their BCS designation similar to Army & Navy, sorry, but no realistic shot at a nat'l championship. The schedule will need to get more difficult to get to Notre Dame's independence designation for the Cougs to have a realistic shot at a nat'l championship. IF BYU continues to win and win big, I don't think that designation will arrive until Jake has left BYU. Just trying to be a realist here. Go, Cougs!!! Here's to a very successful 2011 and playing in a REAL bowl game, other than the LV Bowl .... again!

Looking forward to some of that 'play-action' this fall! In spite of the hastily put together first season and the idiotic naysayer comments, this year will be a great inaugaral season into independence.

I'm sure it will be quite the contrast as to what will be happening 'elsewhere'.

Good luck to all.

I like the Cougars in independence. Let's face it, they outgrew the MWC and will benefit from this move. I posted before, this is probably the best era in history (excitement-wise across the board) for the state of Utah as far as collegiate athletics is concerned. I'm very excited for this season. I have no doubt that this will be a special year, and the Cougs will be much improved over last year. Even with more experience than last year, we are still a young team. I can see us becoming even better in our 2012 campaign. Legitimate Top 25 this year, and Top 10 next year. With a few breaks, who knows . . .

This may be the best group of WR's to ever suit up in BYU blue. RB's should be solid. We saw Heaps come into his own at that end of last season. Nelson looks like a solid backup, but I'd still throw him into the mix 4 or 5 times a game for a little trickery or wildcat formation (not a 2 QB controversy, Heaps is the guy). It sounds like TE's are developing, but I'll reserve judgement until I see the production from them.

Front seven on D may be the best overall front seven to suit up for BYU. It sounds like the DB's are better than expected for such a young group, but again I'll withold judgement until I see them perform.
