What a horrific scene. I have never even seen an injury like that in American
Football. His leg was like a gummy worm. On top of that the sounders really
need zakuani. Mullan should be suspended for the rest of the year. Stupid
As great a move forward that has been made for U.S. soccer by Real Salt Lake,
and sincere congrats are in order, this play is seen as part of "one step
forward and two steps backward". This is unfortunate and uncalled for and
appears to have "sociological implications".
If you watch the part before the "tackle" by Mullan, he had lost the
ball and thought he had been fouled. When he saw Zakuani with the ball, he went
after him, not the ball. As a referee in soccer, we are taught that this type of
foul needs to be dealt with harshly. hence the red. However, as others point
out, Mullan deserves to be dealt with harshly. I feel a player who goes in like
he did, and I do not feel he wanted to break his leg, should have to sit out at
least one game longer than the injured player is out. I Zakuani is done for the
year, then so is the player who created the situation. It is not fair to Zakuani
or the Sounders to have Mullan back in 8 games or so. Really make the punishment
fit the crime.
@TelesteThanks! That's what I figured.
Mullen should be suspended for the season. That was totally uncalled for an
intentional. The league needs to send a strong message that this kind of play
is not allowed.
@ BreakfastThe CONCACAF Champions League was created in 2008. No MLS
team has made it to the Semis or the Final until Real Salt Lake did in 2011. Previously, clubs had competed in the CONCACAF Champions Cup which, like
you said, some American teams had reached the final. The New York
Pancrypian-Freedoms were runners up in 1984.LA Galaxy were runners up in
1997.DC United were winners in 1998.LA Galaxy were winners in 2000.
When I saw the headline, I thought it was an RSL player. Was this a ploy to take
advantage of the horror to get page views for advertising? I see it's the most
popular headline. Very clever.
Hey, I know this is late, but does someone want to explain to me how RSL was the
first MLS team in history to qualify for the semifinals, while other MLS teams
have actually won the CONCACAF championship before? Wouldn't they have had to
have gone through the semis to win the cup?
Can we get a parents' union together like the players' union in England to
regulate significantly dangerous acts? Perhaps the beginning of avoiding
dangerous play like this begins with how the kids are taught in youth clubs.
Awful. A strong message must be sent to Mullen and all players.
Mullan sits out as long as Zakuani AND pays for any lost wages AND all medical
bills not covered by insurance...that might send a message.
This kind of unconscionable behavior must be dealt with at the league and at the
player level. Mullan should be suspended for as many games as it takes the
Seattle player to recover.
I'll tell you how to stop guys from acting like maniacs & hurting other
players. If you make an illeagal tackle, that results directly to an injury,
then you must sit out of the leauge as long as that person you injured is out.
Mullen should be suspended for a long time & fined heavily. There is no room
in any sport for acts like this one.
Brian Mullan should have very harsh penalties coming his way. What kind of
apology is that when you call a slide tackle like that a "freak
accident". I believe he didn't mean to injury him.....badly. The fact that
he did it right after his supposed no-call means he was seeing red and he
stopped thinking. Intent is such a stupid thing to bring up. He was
mad, stopped thinking rationally and someone got really really hurt. You have to
keep your cool, otherwise punishment should follow for someone who should know
I'm an RSL fan, but also a fan of Arsenal in the EPL, so I can attest to the
severity of this injury having seen it twice already in the past 5 years
(Eduardo and Ramsey if you want to look them up). I can say that Zakuani's
career is most likely not over (both Arsenal players have made comebacks), but
it's definitely not going to be the same. For as physical MLS is,
I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner. Like Kreis said, both the league and
the players union should look into harsh, harsh sanctions for plays like this.
Lets see if we in the US can do what the FA and UEFA can't accomplish, get a
good set of rules in place that regulate unnecessary rough play like this.Horrible.
Why didn't they just use some of that magic spray they use on all the rest of
the severe soccer injuries we see on TV? Guy goes down hard, in extreme pain,
appears to be a severe injury that will keep him out the rest of the game, maybe
the rest of the season. Then they spray the injured area with that magic spray
and the guy pops up, good as new.We need some of that spray in our
An ijury this severe is rarely an accident. The tackle was obviously intended to
be retalitory in nature and send a message to the Sounders. The only message
sent was to the MLS offices that a severe fine and suspension are needed. As for Zakuani, this talented player may have just seen the end of his career.
It's too bad that Mullan will get to play more MLS while Zakuani only watches.
