Hey, they pretty much had my rankings (see comments on last rankings) for the week. The only difference was they still had Grand at 5 and I put St. Joseph. I felt Grand had a great opportunity to make their case last week in playing Millard and Waterford, but they blew it. Let's give St. Joseph a shot at the 5 spot. All their losses are against 4A & 3A schools. That's why it's so tough to really rank teams until region play starts. If we can give RH the benefit of the doubt and rank them in the top 5 despite a losing record because of a tough non-region schedule, why not St. Joseph?
Great job Millard!
Anyone in 2a can win it. We see that in region 18. South sevier is beating grand. grand is almost beating millard. millard is losing to parowan. parowan loses to whoever. Anyone can beat anyone.
With st joe's region, it shows that st joe is the best...however they had a close game with wasatch academy. I want to know what happened in the wasatch academy vs south summit yesterday. Liahona BEAT wasatch academy who took st joe's in to overtime and then lost to st joe 4-1. anyone can win.
Region 14 is tough to talk about. south summit is a clear favorite, rowland hall is the clear second, waterford is the clear 3rd. However, waterford can change that with a win against rowland hall this week....after a 7-0 loss can they pull it off?
Can Waterford beat Rowland Hall? Tell me what you think.
Hopefully, in 2A, it will be anyone, but a private school that takes State. I'm routing for Millard and South Summit.
I am a little surprised that Davis dropped so far. They only have one lose and are the defending state champs. I cant see how a one loss one tie Alta team is ahead of Davis. My top Ten in 5A is Viewmont , Brighton, Davis, Copper Hills, Bingham, Alta, Weber,Fremont, and Lone Peak. Weber is a strong sound and great counter attacking team. Viewmont domintated much of the possesion and really should have won but Weber will give anyone in the State a good game. Does anyone know how the Regions will match up in the State Playoffs? last year region 1 had five teams in and were matched up against region 3. If someones knows how the match ups are seeded this year that would be of interest. I think that the top four in Region 1 are pretty well set with Roy looking like number 5. Fremont and Weber could still win the Region title with victories over Viewmont and Davis over the next couple of weeks.
Re: Eagle Dad
did you even watch any of grands games last week? they should have beat millard by at least 3. grand had way more chances to score and 30 seconds into overtime they had a really really good look at the goal. all millard does is kick it as far as they can in any direction. they just get lucky when it goes over the top to their forwards.
waterford was the best team grand has played all year. they passed the ball around and actually had control. (unlike most other teams they have played this year)
the playoffs are coming up i dont see millard getting past the second round. the teams from up north will take care of them easily. i see waterford going deep into the playoffs same with grand. as for south summit, they wont get to the finals for the second year in a row
Aficionado and Eagle dad seem to be right on track with what i think. its a toss up. Especially in region 18. Down south theres is a bit of inconsistency but Millard has a pretty stong hold on the top. I dont think Waterford can beat Ro Hall but i do think the 7-0 was a bit of a fluke. Waterford is still good but i think theyll lose a closer game this time around. Wasatch Academy was missing 3 good players in a 4-0 loss at south summit, but So summit i still think is stronger. so summit coach said it could have easily been a 5-3 game. Liahona is making no sense. Lose to wendover, then beats W.A. who stomped wendover, then they get stomped by St Joe who edged out W.A. interested in their games this week vs st joe, so summit and W.A. I like So Summit, Millard, Ro Hall, and Wendover in the top 4. I dont believe number 5 is definitive right now.
Last fall and winter I kept hearing the good people from Delta whining about staying in 3A because they are one of the smaller schools and felt that they couldn't compete in more than wrestling, they wanted to drop to 2A. Well, they are now ranked in Baseball and Soccer, so maybe this is abnormal (at least in baseball) but I think they are just fine. Besides, Wasatch is going to de-throne them in wresting next year, so maybe they will start complaining again?
Nope, I didn't watch any of Grands games last week. Just about every time a team loses the losing team says that they should have won. I know, you "should have" beat Millard both times and you "should have" beat S. Sevier. But, you didn't. Gunnison probably feels like they "should have" beat you. All that matters is the final score and not what "should have" happend.
I've always said that Grand had a good team, but they just didn't capitalize on a good opportunity to get some big wins at home last week. So, I don't understand the hate towards Millard and saying they just get lucky. They've got "lucky" 73 times so far. How much have you even watched Millard play? The teams "up north" might beat Millard, but I don't think it will be as easy as you think. Millard has had a lot of luck this year.
There are a lot of good teams out there and any one of them could win it all (yes, I even think Grand can).
I think it's funny when parents (or fans) say something about our team should've beat such-and-such team by 3 points. Point being, Grand was beaten on their field by Millard, and also earlier in the year by South Sevier, and Millard. I'm sure there are excuses for those games too. Missing players? Long bus rides? Grand is having a down year. Can't ya be happy that Millard and South Summit are doing well? Hope to see both of them in the finals.
It looks like UHSAA has region 1 matching up with region 4 when it comes to 1st round matchups this year.
i agrees with 2A soccer. millard can feel ggod baout a region championship. who wouldnt? but i think that is it. millard plays like s.summit the only thing is s. summit has more ball control. i really dont see them breaking into the semis but its good they got a region championship for once. i guess they will understand real soccer when they play against it.
i dont ever recall saying that i "hate" millard. they have a good team this year. they beat grand twice, and won region. sounds like a good season to me so far.
i agree with mr. power, you guys dont have any style of play or any build up, which is ok i guess if you have the leading scorer in the state. but, the northern teams do. and look what they did to grand, that was the first time grand has got shut out in over two years. i just dont see millard advancing very deep into the playoffs.
Wow if that is correct than even more reason for all the teams in Region 1 and 4 to try and finish at the top. Here are the match ups if the season finished today. Brighton against Fremont Weber against Alta Davis against Lone Peak Viewmont against Hilcrest. That is a pretty amazing first round. Davis looks to be be awake after their surprise loss to Northridge they come back and absolutley hammer Layton. Layton is a real dissapointement as they have the talent to be much better. A coaching change might be needed up there.
does Enterprise even have a team?
Fremont watch today and tomorrow. They are at Weber today and host Viewmont tomorrow looking for revenge. Two wins and they are in the hunt for the region title. Two loses and they are destined to take fourth and most likely play Brighton or Alta in the first round. Big Big games for fremont.
Re 2A:
You're right, you didn't say hate. Guess I just read too much into what you said about Millard and felt there isn't any love lost there. In any case, sorry for mis-representing what you said.
Now let's get back to soccer. I think every team has their own style of play they hope will play to their strengths. You see it in all sports. As teams adjust to the other teams style of play they do better. I think if Waterford and Grand were to meet again, Grand wouldn't be shut out. It's always tough to beat a team, especially the good ones, twice because adjustments are made. Case in point, Millard beat Grand 4-1 the 1st time, but Grand made some adjustments (I assume) and took the game into OT the next time.
There are a lot of good teams that have a chance of taking state. You and Mr Power don't think Millard's style of play will fair well in the playoffs. You might be right, but I hope not. We will just have to wait and see.
from the looks of it 2A soccer is all anyone cares about.
Managed to catch most of the rematch game in Park City tonight between Wastch and PC (Wasps won 1st game 1-0). With revenge on their mind in this heated rivalry, PC began by establishing its possession passing game through the midfield, but the Wasps used superior speed in the attacking third to get a quick goal, then a second before halftime. The Miners countered several times bringing up players into the attack during the first half resulting in several good close range opportunities, but the Wasatch backline turned them away every time. Park City's possession game largely disappeared in the second half as Wasatch exerted its will leading to 3rd goal. Pretty much total domination after that. Wastch is creative offensively, have tons of speed, and very very good defensively (9 shutouts in 13 games). Wasatch appears to have a strangle-hold on the Region Title, assuring home field advantage during the first couple of tournament games. Wasatch has won every home game since the new high school was built in Heber a couple of years back and from my vantage point that will continue. They have what it takes to win it all in 2011.
@Soccer_Fan: Don't rip on the small towns. I wouldn't trade growing up and playing sports in 1A/2A for anything. Where all of your support? They support ALL of their athletes whether it's their kid or not. Most of the fans are people who haven't had kids in the high school for years but are still there faithfully, and they know ALL of the kids AND their families. You would hardly ever find that anywhere else.
