Well, at least they didn't cut-n-paste the 2A again. But, as of right now, I like my top 5 better. We will see what this week brings. Should be a good week with Grand playing Parowan and at Gunnison. Wendover begins region play. Waterford plays a good Delta team. Layton Christen gets the pleasure of playing S. Summit (twice) and Rowland Hall all in 1 week (who scheduled that?). And last, but not least, S. Sevier gets the chance to pull another upset as they try to do what they did to Grand to Millard.
I agree with the top 3, though without much association between the 3 they could all be interchangeable. As for Waterford, i think DesNews feels they HAVE TO keep them in there. theyve only beaten LCA and Maeser (all 3 games by 1 goal), both bottom of the region and be outscored 10-0 against the top 2 in their region in 2 games. Gunnison could be in there, but so could Grand, Wendover, and after a last minute loss to a powerful Union, Liahona is making a statement of thier own. As you said, this week will tell a lot. I think Millard will win out. Im anxious to see Waterford/Delta and Liahona/Wendover. I believe most regions #3 and #4 could beat region 17's #1.
Keep up the great work Millard!
s. sevier was quite a surprising but they have been some surprises there relating to football season. and i have seen the public schools region of 2A play and there is no sense of gameplay. grand has good game play and then the second has to be gunnison. but most teams just try to put it over the top to the fastest guy or the guy with most ball control. my predictions is they wont make it far in the playoffs
Region 14 is tough. That's why Waterford is struggling. Just because they are losing games against good teams doesn't make them drop out of the top 5. They beat masear 3-0. south summit beat masear 1-0. south summit only beat lca 5-3. those are close games too. realize all of region 14 is good
I still think Region 1 is the best. Dont be surprised if Fremont and Weber who are not ranked very high go far in the state playoffs. I am sure all the other regions will be hoping to avoid a match up with Region 1's third or fourth place team. Viewmont and Davis are amazing.
I'm guessing spartaman is a Waterford player that plays club for Sparta? Fact is region 14 is the strongest region and that is why they are losing, but you can't expect to lose 7-0 and 3-0 and expect to stay ranked. if that were any other team they would not be ranked. They have 3 losses against the 3 good teams they have played and 3 wins against the 3 average teams. It's just weird they are ranked with 0 statement wins.
Region 1 is really good, but Region 4 has two solid teams as well. And you can't forget about Copper Hills and Bingham. There are four teams that I can see winning a championship, and thats Brighton, Davis, Alta and Viewmont.
mr.power,
I agree that Grand and Gunnison have good "gameplay", as you called it. It's fun to watch how they pass and work well as a team. But, to say that they're the only public schools in 2A that have any is false. I think most teams try and put it over the top to their fastest guy, but if it's not there then they set it up. I don't see anything wrong with that. You want to beat the defense however you can.
Also, I think to say that those teams won't fair well in the playoffs is also wrong. Look what Millard, who I assume you put in the category of no "gameplay", did in the 2 games against your top 2 "gameplay" teams. Millard 4 Grand 1, Millard 5 Gunnison 1. I think Grand and Gunnison are both good teams and it will be tough to beat them again, but fun to watch.
i agree they will be fun to watch. and your right about if its there then go for it. but if thats all you have then what happens when it is shut down? millard besides s. summit has the most athletic kids but when it goes against a posseion team like rowland hall or st. joseph it will be a different kind of game. just need to work on different playing styles.
Great comments on 2A Where are all the 5A watchers? 4A? nothing. Night Hawk I see it very similar to you with Brighton and Alta being the biggest threat to Davis and Viewmont. However I still insist that Fremont and Weber might just pick off those teams before the semis. Remember last year Fremont beat Copper Hills 5 to 2 and Fremont has most of its team back. I admit upfront that I am a Viewmont fan as my son is on the team and we beat Fremont 4 to 0 but I still think Fremont is a team to watch.
4A Watcher here. Lehi is right where they should be and will very likely be back in that championship game. Not sure that there will be anyone that will beat them on their side of the bracket. Woods Cross will be tough, Bountiful is looking good but they both really get to pad their stats with Stansbury and Tooele in that region. Not sure how long East can keep up their luck in games as they have exceeded their talent level so far this year. Bonneville should NOT be ranked their until they are willing to go out and play someone in preseason, their opponents are a combined 4-21 right now and they lost most of their play-makers from last year. Logan and Mt. Crest and maybe Bonneville will likely compete for that region. Springville has an easy road to their region crown if they want it. Look forward to others' 4A analysis's.
I think any possession team will have trouble with South Summit and Millard. Rowland Hall has the most possession and South Summit beat them. And it was the same way last year. I don't think Gunnison and Grand are that great too. Grand lost to South Sevier who has like....maybe 4 wins? In the last two seasons. Gunnison's team didn't change a lot and they weren't that great last year.
Look out for Viewmont. Justin Allen, Matt Nielson, Dillon Richens are all great players. You add freshman star Lucas Cawley in there and they are super dangerous. This could be their year. I see Davis getting upset at State. Brighton has to be a favorite too, but they struggled against Bingham. I think they have the talent. Alta is solid..had a slip up against Lone Peak. Copper Hills is just 'ok' to me. Weber could come into state and do some damage.
In 4a it is Lehi all the way. Too good of talent.
In 3a its Wasatch for sure.
I wish Enterprise would get a team together. I wouldn't be surprised if a public team took it this year in 2A. I'm hoping for either Millard or S. Summit all the way - perferably Millard, as S. Summit has already had a great all-around year.
I Agree with 68stang on 4a except for me its looking like Salem Hills might be the class of region 8.
ok weather permitting there should be some good soccer games this week. Big game Wednesday of Weber at Viewmont.
I think you are all forgeting about one huge name in 5A. Copper Hills. They have the potential to take it all this year, I don't think anyone can stop them in the playoffs.
