This article truly is a thing of beauty.
The comparison of our legislature to a bunch of school kids is right on the money.
I am appalled every year with what our legislature does to public education.
It is a wonder our kids do as well as they do.
Is there any other profession on earth that gets more needless micromanaging, more regulation, more criticism than public education?
Can our legislators really by so hypocritical as to decry the federal management of our state then go out and do exactly the same thing to our local cities and school boards?
It really is hypocrisy at its finest.
I really would give our legislature a D+ this year.
Also in regards to the title of this article "Our state lawmakers lost trust needed to lead", you can't lose something you never had.
Our legislature is the embodiment of the pride cycle.
It is only a matter of time until we wake up and see what they are doing to our children.
So let's vote them out. Will we? Or will we turn around and put them right back in to do it again?
Having been in Utah since 1970, I AM ECSTATIC to think there may be the chance for change in Utah State Government. Might we be able to have our voices heard much more often now?
Might there be a possibility that the majority political party will change to a better balance with two or more strong Political Parties?
Those of us who have formerly lived in places where new ideas, diversity, and tolorance are more accepted, are hopeful.
The sheep have figured out what is right and what is wrong all by themselves, and seem to be headed down a different path. Following what has happened this week, we are able to see what Utahns can do when they feel strongly about something. It is no longer necessary to listen only to the "Theocracy" that we are constantly hearing about. We can accomplish what is needed by working together as just plain ordinary citizens.
Now the "ELITE" may have to say something OTHER THAN "If you do not like it here, you can move away".
I disagree with John Florez on HB477, but at least his opinion and bias appear on the EDITORIAL PAGE, where such slant is SUPPOSED to appear. In contrast, much of the media's supposed "news" coverage of this bill has been very one-sided and self-serving. 477 was basically a good bill (that maybe needed a few refinements and clarifications), and it deserved a fair, honest hearing in the media. That did not happen, so unfortunately the rest of us were not well served.
@no fit: Having been in Utah since 1952, I can tell you that there is no chance for change. Still, if you don't like it, please stay. We need more of you.
Well written and a good comparision. Peanuts if you think HB 477 was a good bill you are in a tiny minority. Glad to see Buttars leave. He will be missed, not. The next election can't come soon enough. Hope to someday see an end to the ridiculous caucus system.
A good comparision would be here is Utah's lawmakers lost all the trust needed to lead plus ignore the common folk, that try to defeat this minority government of RINO's, which they also say, has mismanaged the economy and is overly secretive, making back stage deals all the time, no one anymore can be ECSTATIC to think there may be the chance for change in Utah State Government, and gave their legislature a D+ this year as a high grade. Recommendations, fire them all at the polls come re-election time. That's my view.
@ PeanutGallery: how can anyone in good conscience call HB477 a good bill that could with refinements and clarifications be a good law? It would have placed all text messages/emails/etc under a category of privileged communications. We, the people, would never be able to find out just what back room bargaining was taking place on the public's dime. We already have back room deals taking place all the time. You scratch my back, play along, and I will take care of you later. I don't see that as being transparent. Both parties talk a good game about being for the people. The Republican Party in Utah has now officially shot itself in the foot because it believed it was untouchable. The Democratic Party in Utah ( keep the national group out) has an ideal opportunity to finally determine what their message is and to not let the Republican Party do it for them. But will they do it? In the mean time Peanut please ask yourself what type of legislature do you want. If the current session is just that then be careful what you wish for. What goes around unfortunately comes around.
