I believe Makenlee Williams from Syracuse is a JR not a SR. She will be returning next year along with Martin. Congrats to all the girls!! Girls basketball has come such a long way!!!
Can we get a filter so we can see what girl have college scholarships and which one don't. That way we can see which girls college coaches think are the best vs which girls high school coaches are pushing so they can say their team has X many all state players on their team.
Funk is first team and we all know it
I love how you have the ppg but that number is worthless without the attempts per game. Someone hogging the ball all game getting 20 points a game and hitting only 30% isn't that impressive vs someone hitting 80% and 15 ppg.
Lone Peak High School Fan - no she's not! Did you read the paper - if she were 1st team she would be on page D6. I think I saw her on D7.
Sounds like someone is green with envy, eating some serious sour grapes!
Makenlee Williams and Brittney Martin are both juniors. They are both awesome basketball players and incredible people. Congrats to all the MVP's - girl's basketball isnt what it used to be! :)
proudmineralum the people with the envoy is the girls on the list that have no scholarship and will be lucky to get invited to a junior college tryouts. The girls not on the list or low on the list with D1 scholarship offers will be playing in college while many on this list will be watching with their coaches that had enough pull with Debbie to put them as all-stater.
rmk - sounds like someone's daughter didn't get what daddy wanted for her. Sorry but all the girls on all the list were voted by other coaches in their classifications. Basically, the HC of the team they play for put out a list and the other coaches vote on those kids turned in. Votes are counted and that is how the list is made. I am sorry that your little girl didn't do enough in front of other coaches to get their vote. What you are accusing the coaches of is embarrassing. Most of the girls on the first and second team will probably be playing college ball somewhere (if they want to) - they all have tremendous skill and most of all drive to get on this list. Please do not sell them short with your small minded remarks. Great job girls.
Rmk I am interested in knowing about and following the career of Utah high school athletes. Which girls that didn't make the all state team have D1 scholarship offers?
WeberCatBasketballFan Grace Farnsworth going to Utah a Pac 12 school not on the list. Sorry sportsdude Terry no girls playing this year. There are some Bingham Girls on the list.
RMK, what did you mean by Sportdude Terry? My name is Terry and I live in Draper, UT, and my daughter plays hoop, but I am not Sportdude, so this is probably someone different than you think it is.
@Lone Peak High School Fan The two forwards on the first team averaged 17 and 18 points and 11 and 8 rebounds respectively. Not 16 points and 1 rebound. Rebounds (possessions) are a key necessity for a forward.
So you left out one part superdude where the high school coaches call around to each other making deals for votes and blackballing others.
here is my list for 5A done by college scholarships, anyone know any other girls with scholarships or offers;
1st Team
Whitney Johnson New Mexico with many offers
Marquelle Funk Southern Utah
Xojian Harry BYU with 2 other offers
Makenzi Morrison BYU
Grace Farnsworth Utah
Britney Martin decommitted Utah had 3 offers
Miquelle Askew offers from USU and UVU
2nd team
Brooke Slade USU-College of Eastern Utah
Mikail Burningham Northwest College
@GBBFan That is just silly. First of all the "conspiracy theory" type assumption that coaches do that. I once heard a psychologist say that "people who are suspicious that others are doing certain things is because they themselves would practice or consider practicing such things themselves."
But most importantly, this is not college, this is high school. This is not about potential or what potential some college coach thinks they have or will be able to work with. This is about how they perform now, against one another, during this high school season. You simply cannot name a forward with 4 points and less than one rebound per game or 16 points and less than one rebound per game above a forward with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 2.5 steals per game... all delivered in the same classification against many of the same opponents. Wait, can we assume those 18 points were scored with twice as many shots as the 16 points... we have no idea so let's assume that.
Here is what I've noticed from year to year. The SLTrib picks their teams largely on what they see at the state tournament because they really don't have that broad of prep coverage. The D-News tends to pick largely based on stats (they put in some effort to collect stats) BUT also how well a player's team did at the state tournament and how the player performed. Coach votes are also based on what they see at the tournament to some degree because they don't play against every team. I don't doubt there is some politicing that goes on and some personal preference by the editor.
I still have to say, "So what?" So some newspaper blew it and forgot to mention a deserving girl. It happens a lot. And if your girl's whole universe revolves around whether or not she is chosen as an all-stater or a first teamer by the opinion of some sports editor, she is kind of missing the point of playing the great game of basketball. If that is her end goal, she's better perform at a level that leaves no doubt.
@WeberCatBasketballFan are you actually thinking that the stats the Deseret news has are accurate other that the total points. I know they are not. ppg doesn't mean anything without apg. Guards bring the ball down and a post will only get the ball if it is passed to them. I actually have a very close contact that is a coach and I know that barters happen.
If a girl isn't good at high school there isn't any D1 schools offering her scholarships.
Having an all state team based on college scholarship is no more silly that an all state team based on a vote/barter of coaches or the trib using intermountain hoops to help with theirs.
If your fine with the paper picks great. If you think a list based on college is silly so what. That is the beauty of polls everyone can find one that they like. Any girl that preforms at the top level will leave no doubt and college coaches will reward her with the end goal.
GBBFan - you must be a fan (or dad) of the last player on your first team. She was not on anyone's first team besides your.
Please don't take away the accomplishment of the girls that made the first team list with your jealousy.
At the end of the day - the ones that work the hardest and don't change their stripes to make it easier for the child are the ones that deserve the accolades.
I have no idea if the DN stats are accurate or not but that is all most if not all coaches have. I hope your friend had the integrity not to participate in the trading/blackballing garbage and made a stand. I don't think getting college coaches involved in high school recognition is feasible, no. The thing is, how do you educate those making the decisions on the college coaches opinion. Case in point, two of the five D-1 coaches in this state have stated that Wasatch's Mike Brown is the best all around basketball player in the state right now. But do you think his high shooting percentage 20 ppg (with two teammates in double figures) in 3A, defensive prowess, assists, steals, rebounds were weighed against Daddy Corbin's boy's 25 ppg in 5A? Not even considered for one moment I bet. But it's not worth losing sleep over.
If I implied that I wanted college coaches to get invoked that isn't what I meant because we are back to the politics. I meant a college coach either wins games or ends up like the Utah coach. They have 3 or 4 scholarships a year to give. Those that get them are the best, looking at scholarship offers and school size help rate the athlete. famous dad, mom, brother or sister will get you more looks even scholarships. Having coaches vote on the best players is about the same as having media and coaches vote on who is the best football team. I am a fan of all the girls. Have been since my daughters played. I wish the girls had more fans that filled the stands. I also wish I was young enough to have a daughter still playing. I remember you had a problem with that girl or her parents in another article sportsdude. I am a closet fan of that girl because she left the fold to go to Skyline and my friends would be mad. two scholarship offers puts her on my first team.
