Do you use long cooking rice or the instant Uncle Ben's variety that cooks in under 5 minutes?
Good idea to make a bunch at once, instead of making a mess for just one set.
As for contents - use the cheap stuff, whatever you've got on hand. Ideally if you have any on hand that you/your family just don't like to eat, use that for this!!
I've used wheat for longer bags of these and they're great for those sore neck/shoulder muscles. Rice smells nicer when it's heated though and the smaller size works better in smaller pouches. (You can use dried beans for larger pouches, but the smaller size of the wheat or rice flows better and isn't as lumpy.) I've never used popcorn.....
