With Brandon Davies absence, we do not have the athletes to compete with any decent team. Numerous times during the game, rebounds would bounce off the hands of BYU and land in the hands of a New Mexico player who would finish with a lay-up. We had almost no offensive rebounds. We could not score inside. All of these things and more contributed to the loss and Brandon Davies would have made a huge difference. It is delusional thinking that the loss of Brandon Davies will matter little. He is the most athletic player we had and his loss directly affected our performance in this game. Regardless of the reason why he was suspended, his absence matters to our chance in any tournament run.

    Houston... we have a problem.

Well it was obvious that something got into the heads of everyone tonight. Jimmer did what he could but the rest of the crew was a train wreck. ZERO from Hartsock and little to nothing from Abouo. Ouch. This was hard to watch.

Can't believe that the plan for the evening was just to throw 3-pointers. Had a genuine effort been made to attack the basket I believe the charity line would have provide something.

Got to hand it to the Lobos, they were on fire. The refs got me scratching my head this evening as well.

    It's a troll holiday.

Hopefully another 2 days will help this team get up for Saturday.

    Go Cougars. Get 'r done.

    Oh well, onward to Saturday.

The refs can't be blamed BYU's horribls play. But when you think about it, how would you as a basketball player feel if you could do no good in the refs' eyes? No matter what you did, a foul is called on you or you get fouled (big time) with no foul called. Would that bring you down a little bit?

New Mexico played great, but the referees kept BYU from coming back. Did yo notice whenever BYU got a little momentum going, the refs out their foot down, either by ghost calls or no calls? That was the worst officiating I have ever seen and those refs should be fired. No question or debate.

    C92599,

I was at the game as well and have to agree that the officiating was was absolutely awful, some of the worst I've seen, but definitely not the reason for the loss. BYU just looked lost out there and Jimmer's poor shooting percentage in the first half didn't help either. Can't blame Jimmer either. Absolutely no one stepped up to help him out. It's almost as if Davies' suspension hurt the morale of the team and everyone played poorly because their heads weren't in the game.

As fans, we need to give them all the support we can. Think about this: how many people in the history of the sport have had to hurdle this kind of barrier? None. Its not an injury or even death. Its much harder.

They can do it, but they will need our help. Be positive!

    @Coleman51

Did you watch the same game? Davies' absence was a huge factor, but not the reason for the loss. New Mexico came to play. I'll give them that. They shot "lights out". We struggled on offense. However, I was at the game so I'm not sure how it came across on TV, but the reffing was ridiculous. I mean They called a foul on BYU when New Mexico's guard clumsily ran into his own center off a pick. It was ridiculous reffing. Some of the absolute worst I have ever seen. Don't read me wrong. I'm not blaming the game on the refs (read 3rd, 5th and 6th sentence), but they were a huge factor as well!

    coleman51,

We didn't take our most athletic player out of the game. He took himself out of the game by violating the honor code. It's one of those sad consequences of life, not the consequence of a University decision. The loss to New Mexico is hard, but in the end, it's just a game.

Well thats a spirit breaker for all of us Cougar Fans out there. But, the MWC tourny is around the corner. This was the worst timing ever on this team for all that happend. The shock of losing an important player of the team was apparent today. You could tell BYU was lost and confused the entire game. They will have a week for the shock of losing davies, the shock of just getting obliterated by NM, and the shock of whatever ESPN, YAHOO, Chris B, and Hedgehog have to say on the matter. There is still alot of basketball to be played in the coming weeks, shake it off cougars, all is not lost. This was a humbling experiance for this team and they still went 27-3.

Doesn't anyone think that maybe, just maybe Hartsock or Obouo or a bunch of others could have showed up? Or did they just think Jimmer could beat NM by himself? Man up boys.

That was ugly and embarrassing, no inside game whatsoever without Davies and horrible shooting from 3-point range. The team looked like they were emotionally flat and still shell shocked from the loss of Davies. If they dont find their touch from the outside and find someone to step up and start scoring and rebounding on the inside, it could be a early exit from the tournment. I just hope that this was one of those off nights where nothing really went byu's way and that they can rebound from this. Hopefully they will take this one out on wyoming and head into the conference tournment on a high note.

    Go Cougars!!!

This blowout by New Mexico was the direct result of having no Brandon Davies defending and getting rebounds. We have literally taken our most athletic player out of the game. Any team now will allow Fredette to get his 30-plus points because they know now that no one will defend their offense. There is no one who will step up in the absence of Brandon Davies because there is no one on the team with that athletic ability. Decisions like this have consequences. We saw that tonight.

New Mexico stepped up, BYU played terrible basketball. I could see a lot of people blaming the refs, but the refs didn't:

    - Make BYU miss approximately 80%+ of their 3 point attempts
    - Help NM make their 3 point attempts not usually made in other games

I'm sad they lost, but the season isn't over. NM knows how to play against BYU and they showed it. Brandon Davies will feel bad, and he can only blame himself for the violation that happened, but Davies didn't miss all the shots either and I'm thinking the game wouldn't have been that much different with how terrible others were shooting.

Rose needs to figure out something in the middle so we can compete again, and if I wanted any coach in this situation it would be him.

For Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith believed that when a team lost a player unexpectedly, the other players would rise to the occasion and actually play better the next game. I watched the "highlights" of the game and all I saw was white shirts chasing around trying to figure out where the ball was. I am truly surprised.

Besides the obvious, with this incredible loss the Cougars will likely play UNLV on their home court in the mwc tourney.

The more I think about this week, it becomes clear that this loss is just as shocking as the victory was over SDSU.

The game now is as good as over. 20 pt blow out at the MC! I'm not feeling so good about the Y's chances now. Goodbye 1 seed for sure, and the 2 seed doesn't look too far behind.

BYU needs to get some confidence in their shots. Everyone is cold at every range. No matter what they say, this team has been distracted by the SDSU game and Davies.

It has to hurt to go from a national level high, followed up with a national level low.

As a Ute fan, I can attest that this underachieving Lobo team can blow big leads. I wouldn't count Jimmer and company out just yet.

    March 2, 2011 9:18 p.m.

Really???? Looks like the Brandon fiasco is having a major impact on this game. My guess is the BYU team is just not emotionally ready to play the game. It begs the question if the dismissal will greatly impact any chances at a tourney run. Too bad.

Is it something with New Mexico's playing style that makes them different from SDSU and others making them the type of team that matches up well against BYU? I know even good teams tend to have at least one style they just can't match up with very well but I am not familiar enough with either of these teams to speculate on what that could be.

OUch!! The wheels are coming off tonight. What a shame for all these guys to have worked so hard to get there and then have the rug pulled out. Still have hopes for the tourney though, anything can happen.

Mark it down, Chris B. and hedgie will have no honor on these boards tonight.

Great players rise to the occasion.
Brandon will be missed but he only averaged 24 minutes a game due to foul trouble (either that or the coach really likes him so Coach Rose made Brandon sit next to him a lot).

Seriously, Brandon's shoes will be tough to fill but we have several other good players that can step up.

You can do it. You can do it. Be strong. You only have to deal with the mtn. for a few more games. (Me talking to self.)

Thanks for the Aggies tip. I'll be checking in on the game.
