A "Glass Ceiling" for MWC does seem to be in place...does anyone know of any legitimate reason for bias that puts any Eastern team above any Western team, other than population that translates into more Eastern money for media, advertisers, etc.? It always feels like teams from the West are the underdog, and unworthy ever of a top 5 national ranking.
Dray,
That's not true. Pac teams including UCLA and Arizona always get the respect (when they're good) from the media. It really has everything to do with past success in the NCAA tournement. Saying that, outside of Utah and UNLV, no other MWC team has the type of legacy that warrent a top billing.
You have to go back to when Charlies Angels and puka beads we all the rage to find a kewgar team that made any noise in the tourney. Most of "that" media has long since retired.
While rare, it is not impossible nor unprecedented for non-power conference teams to make it to a #1 seed (i.e. Memphis). My guess is that BYU will get the seed that matches their losses. Right now that's a 2 seed. But, today's game @ SDSU and the MWC tourney will still play significant roles in where they end up.
Still the best year for the state was the only year where SUU made the field. The State had all five teams (USU, BYU, SUU, Weber and Utah) in. Someday perhaps all six will get in with UVU included. I'm looking forward to this March mainly for the basketball. Too bad Utah hasn't got it together.
It's speculative at this point. How will BYU do today at SDSU? How about in the MWC tourney? If they finish strong, a 2 see is possible. Even then, it is hard to predict the bias of the selection committee.
Hey Hedgie, notice that this article says USU and BYU in the tourny... hmmmm where your Yewtsies?
