A story covering another news source about what a few students decided after a debate that no one reading this article never listened to. This story is up in stratosphere of irrelevant. Who cares? This is more about moralizing by the DesNews than about covering the news. Is the newspaper a religious tract?

Porn empowers women? When did empower and enslave become synonymous?

The vote likely would have been the same with or without any debate. On moral issues, people usually choose their side and entrench. So this is more a survey of attitudes among this demographic than a win-or-lose debate.

@A voice of Reason:

"I will testify until I die that porn not only makes women objects for men, which hurts women in the end..."

Wait a minute, isn't it women who provide 99 percent of porn? If it hurts them, why don't they cease the practice?

@Cherilyn Eagar:

"First, every prosecutor with whom I've talked has confirmed that nearly 100% of sex offenders are addicted to pornography."

There are certain populations of humans on this earth who wear no clothing at all. Men or women. Nada. They seem to have no pornography or crimes related thereto. There are no sex offenders or sexually addicted in jail or otherwise. Perhaps you could explain this phenomenon to us.

"I've interviewed many women whose marriages dissolved entirely or in part because of their husband's pornography use and conclusively have discovered that their sexual relationships with their husbands... shut down..."

The reason the husband turns to pornography in not just a few cases is because sexual relations shut down... Shut down not be the husband wandering off to view porn but by the husband's spouse's head aches.

What job is a newspaper to do if it's not to shine a light on the sources of society's breakdowns? The commenter who argues that pornography isn't a problem for women since "women make 99% of it" is terribly misinformed.

What you say has a lot of truth to it. But don't blame the head-achey spouse too much. Men and women are built quite differently and have very different sexual drives/needs. Women not so much and men a lot more, generally. Which means someone has to give... usually hubby. The challenge then, is to avoid porn and attend to ones spouse... without complaint or deviation. A fairly daunting task. Even a glance at a fair lady will get a reproval. So one needs to turn his back on those pretty girls with their fancy clothes and curls.

You HAVE to be kidding, right?

Well, 231 voters were fools.

187 were wise.

And 197 are either cowards or clueless. Take your pick.

I also find Deseret News only shows one side.

Over the years, many scientists have investigated the link between pornography and sex crimes and attitudes towards women. In every region investigated, researchers have found that as pornography has increased in availability, sex crimes have either decreased or not increased. Professor of Law Anthony DAmato at Northwestern Law School also published research in the topic. He asserted that the decline in rape cases in the United States (which was an astounding 85 percent in the past 25 years) directly correlates to the availability of pornography.

The American public is probably not ready to believe it, DAmato said. My theory is that the sharp rise in access to pornography accounts for the decline in rape. The correlation is inverse: the more pornography, the less rape.

Suppressing sexual desires and natural urges is unhealthy. Some people need a private outlet. For most women, theres no need to worry. Whatever may be drawing a man to porn, its seldom a reflection on his partner, says sex therapist Lonnie Barbach, PhD. The best studies suggest that only about 5% of porn users have a problem that interferes with their daily lifes.

I share the concern of some commenters that the News didn't really attempt to tell competing viewpoints. I may agree with the message of the article, but one-sided stories make me uncomfortable. I would rather read both sides and then feel that my opinion is fully informed.

WARNING: Pornography use INCREASES sex-related crime. Studies can show anything people want. The Bible and Book of Mormon warned against anything similar for thousands of years. And told of at least one civilzation destroyed due to siimilar problems.
That is 2 warnings against however studies.
Every day the paper has many stories of sex
crimes. 40 years ago there were not nearly as
many. I wonder what the difference is, if not due to
pornography. And I wonder how "sexting" by
teenagers would be rationalized by proponents of
increased porn.
Life itself is not just about sex. But pornography use creates too many addicts who can think of nothing else except sex. And through history, life has succeeded best when sex has been kept sacred.
Thanks for the article; I'll stick to what is tried and proven.

@Dewey Hewson
"those which show that the more access to adult pornography a society has, the lower the rates of rape and other sexual crimes."

That is absolutely the dumbest thing I have ever read.

100% of sex criminals use porn....

100% of alcoholics use alcohol...

100% of smokers use tobacco...

100% of all people who die drank water...

I think we are on to something here!!!
