From Top 5 to unranked in the AP Final Top 25.Utah's bid for 3
straight Top 25 finishes ends at 2.
@SwoopFrom Vegas to New Mexico.BYU's bid for 6h straight Vegas
Bowl ends at 5.Disappointing year but then again we could be like
Utes at #23 are seriously overrated. That offense they displayed against Boise
St was one of the worst college offenses I've ever seen.
Did any other team fall further and faster at the end of the season than the
Utes?I could swear Coach Whitt said something like, "We're not
worried or concerned about our number five ranking. It's out of our control.
Talk to me at the end of the season and see where we are at."(Yes, I know all about BYU's 7-6 season; but I think the Y's and U's upward
and downward trajectories, respectively, met somewhere during the fourth quarter
of the Vegas Bowl)
Successful season, but the direction at the end of the season shows signs that
we have work to do and roles to fill to repeat this success in this Pac-12.
It's going to be fun, but challenging against a tough schedule next year.
Nice cherry-picking, Swoop. I suppose you haven't been calling the Y a top ten
basketball team this week because one of the two polls ranks them at eleven vs.
Just goes to show that if you load your season with lesser opponents, you too
can have a top 25 season. Had the utes played a better schedule, it would be a
different story. The pollsters should take into consideration that the utes
only one one game because of bad officiating. Now off to the Pac-12 and
Congrats. nat'l champions TCU-13-0. As for polls, I have always thought
atheletics was about the play on the field not the opinions from the bleachers.
put it in perspective,Utah lost to the number 2 and number 9 teams in the
country. Those aren't bad losses and really shouldn't penalize the utes in the
ranking (although they clearly did). That is a complete doouble standard as
teams like Mississippi state don't get penalized for losses to teams even ranked
below them because they are part of the SEC. The Utes' only bad loss
came at ND, who showed in their bowl game and last couple games of the season
that they are a much better team than they were the first half the season. Utes really shouldn't have dropped out of the top 25, but it is what it
is. (I don't give any credence to the coaches' poll because of the enormous
conflict of interest inherent in that poll. It is too bad that ESPN
doesn't show the final computer rankings. The utes are in the top 25 in all of
them, so they would have ended up around number 20 in the final BCS ranking.
@Chris B:Hey, we finally found you. Did you hear anything about the
basketball game last night??
Very interesting to observe the level of swagger in the Ute fans when they
finally got to the point in their schedule that Utah played a few quality teams.
It was easy beating your chests with victories over San Jose State and New
Mexico, huh? And don't be too excited about the #23 ranking--it's at once
undeserved and meaningless, which pretty much says it all about the Ute's
season. Maybe next year you can slow the downward spiral as rookies in the
PAC-12. I'm sure you will be proud with a victory over Washington State, if you
A bit surprised Utah stayed ranked, but glad they did. I guess not everyone was
as down on them as we fans were Good season, not a great one, but, hopefully
Wynn get's back healthy and the coaches get the offensive kinks worked out.Go Utes
To Big Al, Pipes, JayDee, FrozenChosen, and Swoop:Please list for me
the quality teams that BYU beat. I will wait. It makes me laugh.
Utah was "overrated" when they were beating the cupcakes on their
schedule. When BYU beats the same cupcakes, and only beats one fairly good team
at home, they are "building momentum" Love it!Anyway,
Congrats to Coach Whitt. When you look at the body of work, Utah absolutely
deserves their ranking (oddly enough, the BCS had them WAY too high IMO, I would
put them about 23, or 24). Three years in a row ranked is a great feat for the
UTes and it will only get better from here!
@JayDee"Did any other team fall further and faster at the end of the
season than the Utes?"Yes, your BYU team in 2001 dropped from
#9 (12-0) to #25 (12-2) in over two games.The 2008 team is still the
best mid-major team under the current system:#2 2010 TCU (3 first
place votes) vs. #2 2008 Utah (16 first place votes)
BYU has never had a 10+ win team that didn't finish in the Top 25 in both polls
- 15 for 15.The Cougars have had four three-year streaks of Top 25
finishes, including a four-year streak that ended last year.Utah,
with two BCS wins in the heyday of their football program, still only managed a
two-year streak.Lifetime AP Top 25 finishesBYU 17Utah
5btw, the AP poll is the poll that ranked Utah #4 and #2 in 2004 and
2008 -- in other words, the poll that Utah fans have always considered more
Very generous for Utah after the way they finished out. Utah won 10 games and
the Ute fans who have a grip on reality that I know are not optimistic about
next year. BYU barely had a winning season but the Y fans I know are very
optimistic about next year. Utah has too many question marks going into next
year. BYU has alot of great players coming back. I wish them both the best but I
am betting BYU wins 10+ and utah is down to 6-8 wins next year.
Congrats to the Utes on a good season (any time you finish in the top 25, its
reason for some celebration). I hope you rough up the PAC-12 next year.Right now, I'm just enjoying basketball season.
TCU is still arguably the best team in the country. The Utes at #23
have ended up about 10 higher than what they deserve. For Utah to
finish even that high next year, they better hope that the PAC-12 put at least
four or five teams in the top 25 by the end of 2011.That will be the
case every year from now on for the Utes.
So much for NC 2010 as was predicted by local fans.
Of course the biggest difference next year is the fact that BYU will have a
cupcake schedule and the Utes will play a Pac 10 schedule. I know BYU has some
big games to start the season so we will see how the schedules match up again.
It will interesting to see how fans will spin this all next year. Experience
tells us that we all have short memories....
Honestly, I thought utah would tumble out. But I think the voters did the right
thing and looked at the whole body of work. Both teams have
question marks, Utah are at QB and at RB, along with the Guards and secondary.
BYU has question marks about the secondary. But I think both teams have
fantastic talent coming in to answer those questions. Let's show
some civilty here. If you are a BYU fan and you think utah will struggle next
year and from here on out, grow up. Stop trying to stir the pot. If you want
to stir the pot, take it to the cougar board. If you are a ute fan who thinks
BYU will be a joke as an indy, you are wrong and you should go run into a brick
wall as fast as you can.
"The 2008 team is still the best mid-major team under the current
system..."hardly, Uteology. As usual, you're using
selective stats.TCU 2010 #2/#2 AP/CoachesUtah 2008 #2/#4It's interesting that you use the AP poll for comparison, and then throw
in "under the current system". The AP "system" today is
EXACTLY the same as it was in 1984.If you really wanted to use
"the current system", you would use the Coaches poll, which is the
"official" BCS poll. Under that system, Utah finished #5 in 2004 and
#4 in 2008.--------------------btwUtah 2010
fell from #8 to unranked in the APBYU 2002 fell from #9 to #25BYU lost Luke Staley, the best running back in the country; a reasonable
excuse for losing two games. What was Utah's excuse for three
humiliating defeats, except for being vastly over-rated after playing a cupcake
I feel badly for Utah. They started the year hyped up and over ranked. They
beat a Pitt team that was over hyped and over ranked. They hit the soft part of
their schedule early and had to finish with the tougher part, and they showed
they were over ranked in their losses and how they lost. They were blown out by
TCU, Notre Dame, and Boise State. They narrowly beat SDSU and BYU. If
anything, the losses to Notre Dame and BYU should have proved their true
strength and should have dropped them from the polls. So, overall, I feel badly
for the Utes. They now enter the PAC12 with a still over-inflated sense of
ability and potential and will be shocked into submission in a tougher
conference. Good luck in the future, Utes, it'll be a very tough road.
Overrated..... Overrated..... Overrated.....
The jealousy continues from BYU fans.Utah losses in 2010: #2 TCU, #9
Boise State, and Notre Dame on the road. It's hard to say anything bad about
the Utah team, other than they lost 2 games they were supposed to lose and they
didnt' show up at Notre Dame. The rest of the games...they won. The body of
work suggests that Utah is a top 25 team (oh, and the AP Poll loses ALL
credibility in my mind when BYU gets a vote!!!)Still have the coach
they wanted, acheived the "quest" they long for 2 times already, still
have 2 BCS trophies, still heading for a BCS conference that BYU wanted. Rose
Bowl aspirations vs. San Fransisco Bowl aspirations. Understandable that the
Cougars are so jealous!!!
Utah = 6 losses in 3 years.byu = 6 losses in 3 months.Add the rankings of TCU, BSU and ND and you won't get to byu's
ranking...multiply by 2.5 and you might get to Utah State's Ranking. Ankle
The Utes have nothing to be ashamed of.Two losses were to teams that
were ranked #3 & #4 all season (with only one loss between them). Losing to
the most storied (and resurging)college football program is nothing to be
ashamed of, either.
@Just the FAXI stand corrected, my bad I overlooked the poll.So yes TCU better under BCS, Utah 2008 in AP."BYU lost
Luke Staley, the best running back in the country; a reasonable excuse for
losing two games."Hardly an excuse:A) With Luke

at #25 and this Ute team is #26 is so horriable.
Once the Utesies get hammered on the road at USC next year, they will plummet to
the mid 50's, mark it Chris B.
WOW, there are sure a lot of BYU fans out of work and looking to take their
anger out on the Utes. I can almost hear the fans like BluCoug start with
the " Rebuilding year " excuse. Seems like that's all the blue bloods
want to do is insult the Utah team and fans. Rebuild this... LOI day is
less than three weeks away and BYU is not even listed in the top 50 for new
recruits. That will pair up well with Broncos new assistants and players. Don't
point the finger Cougar fans, you have some big mountains to climb in the next
few years and you can't stand on the shoulders of BYU's past successes anymore.
ute4ever"It's hard to say anything bad about the Utah team,
other than they lost 2 games they were supposed to lose"It's
funny how Utah fans like to rewrite history. The week of the TCU
game, Utah fans were beating their chests about their Top 5 BCS ranking and the
Utah-TCU game being the biggest game in the history of Utah. Utah fans were
expecting the Utes to beat TCU and vault past Boise State into being serious
national championship contenders. Now TCU and Boise State are merely
games the Utes were "supposed to lose" and Notre Dame is a game the
Utes gave away because they "didn't show up."Get real! The Utes were simply exposed and by the end of the season, they had to
rely on lucky bounces and blown calls to squeak out a one-point win, at home,
over a 7-6 team.Utah has still never come close to what BYU
accomplished in the last five years -- finishing in the Top 25 in both polls
four straight years. From the looks of things, the Utes may never
even get to three straight Top 25 finishes.
It sounds like Utah had a bad season. 10-3. I forget if BYU beat Utah this year?
Did USU beat anyone from in-state? Did BYU a top 100 program in a bowl?
ute4everNope. Not jealous. Hey to the rest of Ute-land:
Congratulations. That's pretty cool. Good luck next year. I hope you
show the rest of the Pac how we play football in the Beehive State.
UteologyNice spin, but the one thing you don't seem to understand is
that the cupcakes, Top 25 opponents, BCS opponents, road games, home games,
blowouts, squeakers, and bowls are already summarized in the final rankings.Your spin, notwithstanding:BYU 1984 #1/#1Utah 2008
#2/#4Utah 2004 #4/#5BYU 1996 #5/#5BYU 1983 #7/#7BYU 2001 #25/#24Utah 2010 unranked/#23Whether BCS-era or
pre-BCS, the final polls are the final word.Your SOS arguments are
meaningless, because SOS was already factored into the polls by the poll voters.
ute4ever"The jealousy continues from BYU fans"Jealous of what?Utah's complete meltdown in the 2nd half of the
season?Hardly!BYU finished the season winning 5 of their
last 6 games. Their only loss, a narrow one-point squeaker on the road in which
their true freshman QB outplayed Utah's experienced QB.The Cougars
completed their rebuilding season with their 2nd blowout bowl win in a row.For a team that started 1-4 with a completely new set of skill players,
a very encouraging build up to next season for BYU fans. For a
10-win, Top 25 Coaches poll team, can Utah fans honestly say the same thing
about the way the season ended for Utah?
I wish this site had more classy cougar fans like fresno girl. To the rest of
you, including the ute fans, lets move on. Both of us like our programs and
feel we are the better one. It doesn't matter. No one is ever convinced of
anything so lets just all be nice ok?
KamUte"It sounds like Utah had a bad season. 10-3."For a team that was once 8-0 and ranked #5 in the BCS to finish 2-3,
unranked in the AP poll, with 3 blowout losses, including their bowl game, and 2
lucky wins, 2010 was a huge disappointment. The last 10+ win BYU team
not to finish in the Top 25 in both polls...It's never happened. 15 out of 15 BYU teams with 10+ wins finished in the Top 25 in both
polls; most of them in the Top 15.
There must have been some magic happening for the Utes to get the wins they did.
If you go back and honestly watch the Utes play Air Force, SDSU, and BYU they
should have lost all three games, but it setup the royal thumping they got in
the Vegas bowl and that was fun to watch.
Big_Ben You're one of the classy Utah fans, so don't get caught up
in the "who did you beat" game.BYU and Utah were dead even
by the end of the season. In fact, the Cougars outplayed and should
have beaten the Utes. If Anae hadn't gone ultra-conservative and sat
on the ball after Heaps had completed 4 of 5 passes to move the Cougars to the
20 yard line, BYU could have scored a TD and erased the possibility of a blocked
FG deciding the game.Utah had a good season, but any objective Utah
fan would have to admit it was a huge disappointment from what they expected.BYU had a rebuilding season, and the beginning of the season was a huge
disappointment for BYU fans. That said. Any objective fan could see
that BYU made huge improvements in the 2nd half of the season. The
team that lost to Utah State in early October would have been destroyed by
Utah. The team that narrowly lost to Utah in late November, would
have destroyed Utah State.
When I asked the simple question of whether any team fell further or faster than
the Utes at the end of the season...I meant the 2010 season. No need
for everyone to dig up and dust off the media guides.Just wanting to
keep it current and relevant. My own answer...maybe the Nebraska
We can say a lot of bad things about the utah team. We just chose not to, the
AP poll dropped the Yewets from their top 25, they fell away the way to No.
26...still a really nice year. However, the Y will continue to rule the
"Little Sisters of the Poor" located on the hill.
If you lost the game, you did not outplay your opponent. What part of that do
people not understand. I for one am a dissappointed Ute fan. Going
into the TCU game, everything was looking up. Afer the game, as a fan, I felt
there was nothing really to play for the rest of the season. It seems many of
the players and coaches felt the same way based on how Utah finished.
Who cares what byU fans think, they are the most insecure, uptight people
anyways. On another note, can I be invited to Rice-Eccles when they replace the
Mtn. West logo on the field with the Pac 12 logo? That will be awesome. Here's
lookng forward to next season. Go Utes!
You can throw all of the ranking combinations together from any of the polls and
for any period of time; that's just getting down into the weeds of your
particular school and nobody outside of that zip code cares. On the national
level they don't even care about mid-major conference championships. The only
measure for mid-majors is BCS Bowl appearances and wins; we all know how that
story ends. I'm with "Wallbanger" the PAC12 logo on the field
at RES will be sweet! and will be another symbol of an era come and gone
(mid-major).Good news for byu is that they are still writing their mid-major
story and perhaps can accomplishe something that matters outside the
"If you lost the game, you did not outplay your opponent. What part of that
do people not understand."There are many factors in a game.
When Utah's punt went so far off as to hit a BYU player in the back as he was
running, resulting in return of possession to Utah mean that Utah outplayed BYU
that play? Did the blown fumble call mean that Utah outplayed BYU at that
time?Judging by the way things were going, any of those two
incidents could have changed the outcome of the game. They were not results of
good play. BYU outplayed Utah, simple as that.I will admit that it
could be argued that SDSU outplayed BYU, but there is still plenty of evidence
that BYU outplayed SDSU (as I said, with the way things were going, even the
controversial call may not have made a difference, and there was a facemask
there anyway). However, it would be difficult to argue that Utah outplayed BYU.
Saying anything different just shows that you didn't watch the whole game, you
only watched the blocked kick.
UU702The ultimate measurements are National Championships and
Heisman Trophiesand we all know how that story ends.
All the dorks out there spatting out statistics. They mean nothing. Utah
finished where they should have and so did BYU. Who cares about the past. Why so
many fans love to live in the past is unbelievable. Ok, I admit it, I used to
but I did get over it. I have realized that the past means nothing, it will not
help my future. The only thing that will help is to show up and play. Go BYU and
make something out of this opportunity. Go Utes in the PAC-12 until we meet you
on the field. Thankfully it will be early this next year and we won't have to
wait until the end.
@Cougars 1984 and 1993That story is irrelevant today.@RockwellNo spin, only facts. Only hypocrites will argue that a
#26 10-3 Ute team is horrible while making excuses for the most overrated 12-0
team in history that finished #25.
@UteologyI think if you were a Vanderbilt fan, you would dig up the
insignificant stats that would have them rated the best program in the country,
in your mind.Fine some objective facts, bro, and you sill see that
the Utes are hurting bad, basketball and football.Utes can afford
Chow, but are too poor to buy out Boylen.Could it be that Dr. Hill
is spending all of his magic bean money on trying to restablish the U as BYU,
Cali Coug you mean the team on the hill who owns your team by 20 games? Nice
try little brother.
@CougarsThe ultimate measurements are National Championships and Heisman
TrophiesAnything in the last two and a half decades, this century?
Anything more recent than two conferences ago?Anything where those
who accomplished it aren't grandfathers now?
@UU702Legacy programs are not necessarily restricted by your
arbitrary choice of time.BYU is what it is and they do have an NC
trophy. Utes don't.Now after the season is finally over we see what
the Utes are... highly overrated and struggling going into its inaugural season
in the PAC-12.BYU has the momentum going into 2011.
sammyg, BYU only has a NC trophy because they are the luckiest team ever. You
really think your 1984 team that didn't beat anybody that was ranked in the AP
top 25 is more impressive than a 2008 Utah team that beat 2 AP top 10 teams and
another 2 AP final top 25 team (4 ranked teams vs. 0) and beat the tar out of a
national power program that had been #1 much of the season in a BCS bowl. If
the BCS had been around in 84 there would have been a good chance that BYU
wouldn't have gotten into a BCS game with that weak resume. Why do you think
much of the country was up in arms about BYU's supposed NC with all the Bo
Diddly Tech references? I feel if there were a poll taken about the most
undeserved football NC, BYU 84 would win as you beat no final ranked teams, you
played in a second rate bowl in December (the big games are January) and your
team barely beat a 6-6 5th place team. What Utah did in 2008 and 2004 is far
more impressive to most fans.
The utes were never at the level of TCU, Boise State, Notre Dame, or BYU. Too
many ute fans in lala land. Now that the utes have raided ex-BYU players for
coaches, they may go after a former cougar coach.
pebble, your comparisons are laughable. Different era. Utes could
have done the same thing back then but couldn't. Call it luck but the team won
its games, got votes and that's history. No amount of speculation will tarnish
the NCfact. You mentioned luck, a lot of games are decided by it.
Utes AFA, SDSU, BYU games were lucky wins bubba. 8-0 then to 10-3 just seemed
like a losing season didn't it?2008 was an injustice. Agreed.A lot of you guys just live to discredit any accomplishments of BYU. BYU
has had its moments, Utes have had theirs.Funny you discredit BYU
for turning around a bad slump and winning their bowl game while the mighty Utes
suffered their 3rd beatdown of the season. How is 52-24
"barely"???I think you meant to say the Utes
"barely" scored in their bowl game.Lost the BCS run. Lost
your bowl game, lost your bowl record, suffered 3 humiliating games on TV, lost
your QB and lost all of the momentum going to the PAC-12.Oh, lost
the basketball game lastnite as well.Lost momentum and relevance.
Looks like a mid-major crisis.
Utah was clearly never worthy of a Top 10 ranking, they just looked very good
after dominating a run of very bad teams. The same teams that BYU finished
with, and also dominated, by the way.The Utes, with the help of some
bad officiating, gutted out a win against a much improved BYU.From a
national perspective, Utah had four opportunities for defining wins - Pitt,
Notre Dame, TCU, and BSU. They went 1-3 in those games, losing three of them
badly. At face value, 10-3 looks pretty good. But being outscored
101-13 in the three losses is very sobering. To those who believe
that BYU was noticably younger than Utah this year, both teams returned 12
starters from their 2009 squads. Utah returned 49 lettermen, and BYU returned
46.Coach Whitt is 57-20, and Coach Mendenhall is 56-21. With that
in mind, trying to prove that one coach or team is significantly better than the
other seems sort of silly, doesn't it?Like this year, BYU's schedule
is tough early, then gets much easier. Utah's 2011 schedule will be their
toughest one to date.I hope both programs have future success.
Rock Of The MarneYou continually discount BYU's NC. The U was
playing football in those years ... if a NC was SO EASY to get, why didn't you
go out and get one?I root for the Utes to do well, but sometimes
certain "fans'" need to downplay the accomplishments of others is
tiring. That goes for both sides.
