Am I really sitting here longing for the second coming of Majerus?? The last few Ute basketball games have turned my stomach. I have patiently watched and listened to Boylen's bluster this year, only to leave each game (winning or losing - mostly losing) with the words of one of his former (transferred) players ringing in my ears - "Utah will never (...live up to Utah's standards for basketball success) as long as Boylen is driving the boat!" Giacoletti and Boylen have sucked the life out of a great college basketball program. Dr. Hill, it's time to cut the losses before we suffer a PAC-12 beat-down. Two words - Jeff Judkins. 'Nuff said.

Front row seats behind the Ute bench at South Bend and the Vegas Bowl left me wondering what was going on in the Utah locker room. Against ND, the coaches were barely speaking to the players. Against BSU, Christopher stormed off the field at halftime lobbing F-bombs at the coaching staff. Mid-way through Q3, Jereme Brooks was up in the face of Asiata and a couple of the coaches. He had to be physically restrained. In 40 years of Ute football, I have never witnessed that level of dissention. Who can enlighten me as to what was going on? If that type of rift is allowed to continue, next year will be a rough one for Whit & company.

I think it is perfect timing for the Utes to make the cange to the PAC. PAC athletics are a bit more down than usual.

I always have faith in Kyle. The football team will do fine next year. I think Kyle and Bronco both were great calls for their Universities.

My issues have never been with the UofU, just the way a select few of the fanbase, and players represent the state. (Oh, and Boylen -- getting better during a 5 game slide that included San Diego?)

    Have I mentioned Tommy Connor?

And Uteology, my dad lived during the recession, my grandpa lived before WWI, so if you are talking leatherheads, the U's glory days... I entered the U in '79, my wife graduated in the 80's...

So, understand the reader base when you refer to your "grandpa's teams".

So you don't really have a base of experience to work off of. That explains alot.

And you are still using the strawman selective facts... Work with us, and clean up your arguments.

Interesting comments. Kyle is a guy you can root for. I live or die cougar blue. Kyle's name was mentioned for those high profile programs just maybe because he could be gotten. The Ute D has been really good for several years. The offense is starting to come apart with lots of questions. Your trip to the Pac 10+ii will prove where those questions are. There are cheap shot teams in the Pac 10 like USC and Oregon. Utah will have an increase in injuries. You will probably be in the 7 win arena for several years. As for basketball. Ouch. The forseeable future shows it will be ugly. This is what is meant by CANNON FODDER. Kyle is good, you may get some folks who will help on offensem but then again maybe not.

The front 7 on defense will be much better next year with the changes at LB, so replacing the secondary will not be a huge issue. Manis is gone, but you gain back Fotu and Williams who were hurt this year. I could see Fotu used at DE or LB and Blechen at MLB next year which is a major speed upgrade. Martinez and Walker will not be needed on every down and Fehoko will also be in the mix.

Utah has placed several players in the NFL recently from the Corner and Safety spots and Scalley does a great job coaching them up. Belchens play as a Freshman is a great example. Whit has also done a nice job recruiting and making position changes in the secondary.

There is a ton of talent already in the program to replace what is lost at WR, OL, RB and Secondary positions. Even at QB if needed. I would have liked to see more Reggie Dunn and less Shaky at WR this year.

The big questions are Wynn's health and ability to put on some weight in the off-season, and the offense making some adjustments to utilize talent.

Your Grampa really went to the U in the 80s? Weird, mine was alive during the Depression.

Good luck being part of the pac next year.

    for utahcountyute:

How easy to be selective in comparisons of records and teams played:

Here's one to wrap your head around...

Utes lose BIG on NBC to a Notre Dame team that was 4-5 at the time coming off a loss to...wait for it...Tulsa?

    So by your rationale...Tulsa>NotreDame>Utah

Oh, if you didn't notice...the football powerhouse CO Buffs you just downgraded...they're your new rivals. Wow!

You mean the same Georgia Bulldogs that finished 6-7 and got beat by Colorado? Sorry, I over looked that.

I will admit that UCF was a stretch and they will give byu all they can handle, but I was just including all of the home games that will be sooooo very exciting next year for coog fans to enjoy.

Swoop (see how obsessed he is with the Utes) and the coog are right, they know good football, coming off a huge win against UTEP, a solid 7-6 season they know how to win.
Remember they crushed UW last year at home, so they know all about the PAC, and now they are off to being independent because so many BCS conferences want all the national respect and support they have, us little Utes don't know what we are in for. So you UTES up there talking about how we play USC, UCLA, have a Championship game, in a AQ and end up in the same bowl that TDS does if we go .500, you keep your mouths shut!

If anyone knows and talks Spirit Honor Independence Tradition it is our Mid-Major buddies from down south!

Dont forget the fact that Burton is still un-blocked, we are 2-3, 6-9, 6-10 or beat them more than they beat us in the MWC, they are the TDS!

    Go UTES!

Are you seriously downgrading UCF as a BYU opponent?

Do you ever do any homework?

    UCF Knights are:

    * Ranked #25 before the bowls.

    * Defeated Georgia in the Liberty Bowl.

    * Will definitely finish ranked higher than the 2010NCUtes.

If you're going to take shots, at least do so with some credibility.

  • Truth Machine Salt Lake City, UT

Pretty selective list there; lets expand it just a bit:

    Conference Championships
    BYU 4
    Utah 4

    Top 15 Finishes
    BYU 3
    Utah 2

    Doak Walker Award Winners
    BYU 1
    Utah 0

Even with the Crowton years (the worst three years of BYU football in the last fifty), and Utah's two BCS busting seasons, BYU still won as many MWC championships as Utah, and had just as many 10+ win seasons.

BYU also finished consistently higher in the polls, and BYU added an additional national individual award winner -- bringing BYU's total to 15.

Even in their heyday, Utah still couldn't manage one single player who was outstanding enough to win a national individual award.

(Don't bother bringer up draft picks; if Alex Smith had really been that good, he would have won the Heisman, or at least one of the other major quarterback awards.)

swoop: I will have fun watching the Utes abuse Montana state. I will also have fun on my planned trip to Berkeley, Watch them play USC, UCLA Arizona and Arizona State as well. I like that schedule much more than the TDS that somehow believes that playing a watered down WAC schedule makes the "Notre Dame Western University"

"Probably about as much fun as you'll have at the Montana State game. lol"

"Probably about as much fun as you'll have at the Montana State game. lol"

True, you got me there, but how thrilling will UCF, Utah State, San Jose State, Idaho State and New Mexico State be? *crickets* lol

I'll be at the basketball game next week too. Let's talk after the cougs get throttled by UNLV tonight.

  • Uteology Fort Worth, Texas

Basketball is in bad shape, won't change much unless Boylen is fired.

Football, the offense has major issues and the problem starts at the OC. It's one thing to be loyal but it's another to ignore signs that A-Rod is a step down from Ludwig.

I hope A-Rod can turn it around, but that's what I said in week 10, 12, and 13... where the offense continued to be horrible. If it wasn't for The Block the season would have been a big failure.

    @MichiganCoog and Swoop

I rather struggle in the PAC-12 than to struggle and finish 5th in the MWC.

    In the MWC...

    .500 or below seasons:
    BYU 5
    Utah 2

    10+ wins:
    BYU 5
    Utah 5

    undefeated (top 5):
    BYU 0
    Utah 2

This isn't your grandpa's Utes (the 80s), every trend proves it:

    A) rankings
    B) record vs ranked teams
    C) players being drafted in the NFL
    D) increasing class rankings
    E) head to head vs BYU

They all show Utah is on the right track. If I am wrong then why was KW's name mentioned for Tennessee, Miami, and Florida openings.

Now, you have what you campaigned for and the fans have done their bragging, but your on your chosen pedestal next year and it's going to soon be time to show everyone that you belong. Thats called when the "rubber meets the road". Any concerns now?

"Have fun at the Idaho game next year though."

Probably about as much fun as you'll have at the Montana State game. lol

The September game, however, will be a lot of fun! Luck won't play a factor, though, because your beat down will be decisive.

"Kwitt and his staff have always come through."

That's what we heard this year. Kwitt always wins the big games. Utah always wins their bowl games.

Why no mention of the basketball game next week?

Riles is much better as the voice of the Utes and they should have never changed him. In fact they should have left the whole booth intact with stat guys and spotters as well. So the question is...Riles, when are you going to bring your old spotter back :)

Nicely said UtahCountyUte! Michigan Coug can save his whiny concerns for his own team. This isn't the Utes of the 70s and 80s. This is the Chris Hill - Kyle Whittingham - MUSS Utes!

Lucky for us you're not. Have fun at the Idaho game next year though. LOL

There are questions going into the PAC in football with the level of competition for sure. Basketball is not that big of a deal because they can only go up from where they are.

Kwitt and his staff have always come through. The defense is always atleast good and most of the time great. The offense does need some attention but with critical pieces coming in, the Utes will compete.

Michigancoog.... your team down south will be the first to see if the Utes can compete next year. Look forward to the game in Sept and we don't need your "Luck".

@MichiganCoog. Thanks for your concern, I think will be ok without any "green backs" next year. We'll have $ as BYU in 2012, with more $ coming in in 2013 and beyond. Middle of the Pac 12 has us playing BYU in bowl games. BYU has great and storied programs in football and basketball. Good luck to them in the future. As a Ute Nation we're very happy and excited about where we are and where we are headed.
    GO UTES!!!!!

I'd hate to be a ute-fan right now...stinky basketball team, all your most important Football team positions completely gone, and a new conference on top of that spells complete and utter disaster. Finishing last in the MWC in basketball, followed by a humiliating football season ahead, with no green backs coming into the UTE coffers for the next 3 seasons, will result in a lot of empty seats, a dis-interested fan-base will result in a lost cause on the hill. Nice move to the PAC12, only to become the 3 eyes step-sister that nobody cares about presents a very gloomy future...GOOD LUCK yoots you're gonna need alot of it...GO COUGARS!!!

Boylen is doing a good job and we should all stand behind him and support the guy. I say keep him on and offer him a 3-5 year extention plus a bonus.

  • bigutefan Las Vegas, NV

The real question is who is hired when Boylen is fired? Can we get a name? A coach who actually has been a coach, not some rah-rah clown at the end of the bench. Boylen has destroyed Utah basketball and he needs to be let go now, but if we have to wait three months, so be it. Just get rid of the meat head!
