Why should we care for each other? That's what the government's there for!
That IS what the government is there for. Because it's an extension of us. A manifestation of our society. And, at some level, that manifestation includes caring for one another. If it doesn't, it had better quit going to war on our behalf. However, as the government is there, so are we as individuals. Mr. Florez expressed this nicely in his recount of a tradition maintained by his family. Our sense of sharing and community isn't just in our government, or our individual actions. It's in both; it's in the fabric of our society. We can have a government that makes us better. Give thanks, pray for peace, care for each other. If these are bad sentiments, then I am a bad person.
