Guess BSU deserves their high ranking, though Utah's defense held them off pretty well.
Good game, and good luck to all teams next year.

    Swoopy Swoop Swooperoo,

Trust a Coug to resort to stats and not the standings or the scoreboard, so why dont you keep livin off your stats and the rest of us rational thinkers will go by the scoreboard. We both know which one really matters, and neither of us needs a hyperbole to make that argument.

Now go be a good little boy or girl, and maybe tomorrow Santa will leave you book on How to Make a Real Argument With or Without a Hyperbole under the tree.

    LOL Truth machine,

let´s see, if Utah scores a TD on that first drive, they are down 23-10. In your view that means they are not in the game.

They were only out of the game once they had to settle for a FG attempt (which unfortunately the missed). So yes, everyone in the college football world would agree Utah still was in the game until the end of that first possession of the 4TH quarter.

And if you really think I´m a BYU hater and post on BYU articles, then you are again showing your bias towards anyone who is a Utah fan (i.e. you are a utah hater, not a byu fan.) I am fine with BYU´s institution and their athletes (with a few exceptions of the embarrasments like Hall). It is the obnoxious fans (note: not ALL the fans) that irritate most of us.

And if you do state something like `wookie is all over the BYU boards´, then maybe you would be so kind to support that. You might find 2 posts of mine in the last 2 months on articles related to other teams that are other than giving congatulations.

To all those who disliked Andy Ludwig.....you miss him now. This looked like Coach Mac's offense. The Utes had a tough time crossing the 50 and getting into Boise State territory!!!! Ludwig's game plan was genius in bowl games. I think the locals in Utah didn't like him because he is not "one of ours" (although he is from Logan). Let's stop the silly "we know these guys" mentality. The Utes were exposed....the Pac 12 is tougher then people think. Oh wait, know the Pac 12 is a tough conference! Funny how the MWC folks don't believe that until now....LOL

Sky walker, yes teams with the same record are still ranked based on how they did against the other teams. I am not sure which coo aide you have been drinking but it has been that way for decades.

Second, the Y wasn't chosen to play the U, so all your "it's" mean nothing. The Y had a chance to prove they were better and could Finnish off the game. that is why they play all 60 minutes. The Y lost. Learn to accept it.

This Y team had their chance and messed up in the big games. Next year is a new year, so let's move on. In no ones ranking will BYU end up better than the U's.

Does someone have to be reminded of the fact that true freshman Jordan Wynn in his 4th start took extremely experienced senior Max Hall to overtime? It's a rivalry game, these things are almost always close.

We attended the Las Vegas bowl; of course we knew the Ute's heads were going to be handed to them - and they were. From the UFA on the Utes looked sicker and sicker. What amazed me more than anything was the time the BS QB had to throw. He couldn't be touched. So Utah's defense left a lot to be desired. But, Utah will improve mightily in the PACC 12. This game will be but a distant memory (one worth attending in spite of the collapse)

    @SportsFan
Both ESPN and MWC ranks BYU 5th. Who's your source?

Try using a little common sense Uteology. There is no ranking in conference finishes.

When three teams finish with the same record in conference that's all that matters. Overall records are irrelevant.

    TCU 8-0
    Utah 7-1
BYU/SDSU/AFA 5-3 (tied for 3rd in the MWC)

If TCU had finished 7-1 in the MWC with an 11-1 overall record and Utah had finished 8-0 in the MWC with a 10-2 overall record, Utah still would have finished 1st in the MWC even though TCU could have been ranked 10 places higher in the polls.

Conference rivals have sometime been rematched in bowls.

If Utah would have been playing BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl last night, instead of Boise State, who would have been favored?

More importantly, how many BYU and Utah fans would have been shocked to see BYU not only win, but win by two or three touchdowns?

That's the reality of where BYU and Utah finished the season.

    @SportsFan
Both ESPN and MWC ranks BYU 5th. Who's your source?

    @Truth
BYU went 6-1 vs cupcakes, Utah 6-0. That's not spin but reality.

    @TrueBlue
Spin is when you have to use "intangables" to prove a point.

    Reality is:

    1) BYU went 0-3 with Hill vs teams with a winning record

    2) BYU went 1-2 after Hill vs teams with a winning record

Did BYU improve, yes. So yes they could beat USU today. Can they beat @FSU, @AFA, Nevada? Not likly considering...

    BYU vs Utah:

    1) BYU played its best game of the season against a team with a winning record (If I am wrong, tell me who then)

    2) Utah's offense was horrible in last 4 games scored 30 total points, 17 on BYU

    3) Yet Utah just needed 5 minutes of good football to beat BYU

This BYU team is similar to the 2007 Ute team. Exposed early (@UNLV vs @Utah State) and mediocre at the end (9-4 vs 7-6).

Only time will till if this 5th place BYU team can run off a 33-6 record with a #2 or better ranking.

"Despite Utah playing as poorly as they did, they were still in the game through the first possession of the 4th quarter."

Utah was down 23-3 when Joe Phillips missed a 36-yard FG that still would have left the Utes behind by 16 points even if the FG try had been good.

To say that a team that had only scored three points in three quarters was still in the game at that point is a gross distortion of reality.

Boise State mercifully called off the dogs in the 4th quarter or it could easily have been a 30+ point blowout. (Boise State didn't throw a single pass in their final possession -- NINE straight running plays.)

I would hope that one of the areas Whitt addresses in the offseason are the stupid penalties. For awhile last night, we looked much like the mid 90's Utes when Mac was here and we couldn't go one game without 150 yards in penalties to go with our >10 pts. Our defense played alright considering their opponent. But the offense needs some work. It didn't help that we had our back-ups in at QB and LT, but the talent is there.
It may be time to rethink the co-OC position with Schramm and Roderick. I never thought I'd say it, but these last few games have shown that Andy Ludwig wasn't as bad as some thought. He was frustrating at, but at least he could devise a gameplan regardless of who was playing and make the necessary adjustments. We need that kind of expertise or else all the speed and raw talent in the world won't be enough to compensate. I think they're good position coaches, but this year showed they've got too much room for improvement to be charged with calling plays and devising gameplans against top competition.

Trust a Ute to resort to hyperbole when they really don't have an argument.

BYU outplayed Utah at Utah and BYU would easily handle the Aggies if they were to play the Cougars again.

BYU steadily improved throughout the season and was easily the best team in the state by the end of the season.

  • wwookie Payson, UT
    Dec. 23, 2010 4:58 p.m.

Utah should still be ranked. They have 3 losses, 2 of those to top 10 teams. The only loss that should have been a win was ND. Let's wait to see how the Irish perform in their bowl before we are so quick to say the Utes don't deserve a top 25 ranking.

How many 10-3 teams will there be by the end of the season? That's a good accomplishment. I had predicted an 11-2 season at the beginning of the year, but am still content with a team that showed they have talent. It was strictly execution that kept the Utes out of this game once the 3rd quarter ended.

Despite Utah playing as poorly as they did, they were still in the game through the first possession of the 4th quarter. Not too many other schools can claim that against BSU.

And to the cougar fans who love to hate and show their true hypocritic faces, let me know what stories you think I post on that relate just to BYU. You might find 2. The fact is you read more Utah boards and THINK that I'm all over the byu boards!

A team that barely survived losing to a 7-6 team lead by a true freshman quarterback at home by one point, doesn't deserve to be ranked, especially when 7 of Utah's 10 wins were against cupcakes.

BYU didn't have a better overall season than Utah, but BYU certainly finished the season stronger.

Utah's only "decent" wins were against AFA(8-4), SDSU(8-4) and, ironically, BYU(7-6).

Pretty big "only difference" in last 5 years. In fact, I am pretty sure BYU would trade all the other lesser "differences" to do the BCS once - which last I saw they hadn't.

But, thanks for the stats. BTW - if the last 5 years are relevant, than so is the last 12 months - care to do that math?

Utah won 2010 - even losing in the Las Vegas (toilete) Bowl - Utes won this football season.

"current highest ranked opponent" is meaningless for next year 4D. Try studying a little college football history before spouting off about how strong or weak a team's schedule is going to be next year.

Did you predict that Auburn and Oregon would be undefeated and playing for the BCS title this year ahead of Texas, Alabama, Florida, and Ohio State?

Did you predict that Nebraska would win the Big 12 championship, but lose at home to Texas(5-7)?

The fact is, you don't have a clue whether Texas will be a national championship contender or a Big 12 bottom dweller next year.

You don't have a clue whether Utah will be a PAC 12 title contender, or a bottom dweller.

So take your prognostications and file them away under "dart board predictions" until next November.

A year from now we'll see if they're even close.

There are a couple of things I want to say. It looks like girlsy state thumped Utah. Except for a couple of passes, Shakey played great, carried the offense on his back. Utah's defense had some really great plays, they really tried to carry the day. I feel bad for Kyle. Not really because they lost but for the way some of his players acted, both before and during the game. Nothing takes the place of honor in the way you conduct your life. Some of his players and a chunk of Utah Fans have not learned that lesson. As for the game. I rooted, for probably the first time, totally against Utah. Not cause I am a BYU fan, but because of the way too many really scummy Utah Fans and a few players. Before you have a cow Utah Fans I probably watch more Utah Football and basketball games than even your best fans do. Get used to being cannon fodder. This is only the beginning. Tough game for the Utes...no single person to blame, too many dropped passes, too little experience for Cain, and the fumbles...ugh.

Having been at the game, a few observations:

Boise was just OK - certainly not top 10 caliber - so, the Utes are a decent, but far from great team in 2010.

The Vegas venue is HORRIBLE...mud, facilities stink, food aweful, the field looked like a 1990 retread...overall - looked like a cheap bowl game (and is a cheap bowl game).

BSU fans were pretty good. The 2 drunk guys sitting in front of us were dorks, but an overall assessment - I thought the BSU fans were pretty good.

Utah needs a lot of work going into next year and the PAC. I think they can do it - and I think Kyle is a great coach...so, excited for next year.

10-3 is a good season - so thanks to the Utes for a fun year!

  • MiP Iowa City, IA

    Some thoughts on this game:
    ---Boise deserves a Top-10 finish.

---Can't fault the Utes effort. I thought they played decently despite missing their starting QB and left Tackle.

---USAlover must not like math. Rounding 23 to 30? If anything, the final score should have been a lot closer (Utes had 1 TD called back by by a hold---even though Doug Martin's TD could have also been called back by a hold AND a block in the back---and a deep pass at the goal called back because of a hold and two missed FGs)

---Utes deserve to finish ranked around ~24th or 25th (need to consider two losses were to Top-10 teams and the third to a good team on the road. PLUS wins over two teams directly behind them in the "others recieving votes"...@SDSU and @AFA). Folks who disagree would have to show me all 25 teams that are more deserving.

---Next year will be great in PAC-12.

---BYU made a nice turn around this year.

---Including bowl games, the Utes final SOS will likely end around the same as BYU's and 10-3 is always better than 7-6.

Oh yeah Byus schedule next year is not as amazing as you pipe it up to be. It looks pretty bad when your current highest ranked opponent on your schedule next year is Utah. The same Utah team in your eyes that is horrible team. Oh yeah you play power hose Texas with 5-7 record ,and ole miss that is 4-8. The wac teams you play next year you dont want me to get started on. Okay two top 10 teams beat us pretty good so we are completely overrated. How bad does that make BYU look loosing to such a bad overrated team such as Utah? The funny thing is Utah played one of their worst games of the year and they still beat Byu when Byu played out of their minds. I am not saying Utah was amazing this year. I am just saying to all you Byu fans that talk trash you have no room to talk trash, because your team is not as good as utahs. Utah was mediocre this year, Byu below mediocre.

  • 4D Provo, UT
    Dec. 23, 2010 3:28 p.m.

I don't know how a team with an overall record of 7-6 has any room to talk trash. Your BIG victory of the year came over a horrible Utep team that plays in the worst conference in division one football. That Utep team that you beat so convincingly only beat 5 division one opponents , and Uteps other wins came over division one double a opponents. Okay BYU fans loosing to 7-5 Notre Dame is really bad I know. But how much worse is it to loose to a 4-8 Utah State team that Boise State completely destroyed. I know that is quite hilarious that Utah lost to Boise State ha ha. However, that same Boise State team beat two teams that beat you pretty convincingly. With that at in mind its quite obvious if BYU played Boise State the result would be the same. Okay lets talk about your six wins should we. How many of those wins came over teams with a winning record? Um lets see the answer equals one. You keep on knocking on Utah stength of schedule when you have only beat one team with a winning record.

    Uteology

When you're finished with all of your spin, here's a reality check:

After all of the hype, BYU was one four-play series of ultra-conservative play calling and a blocked FG away from beating Utah and tying the Utes for 2nd in the MWC.

For a team that started the season 1-4 with a brutal schedule, a two-headed QB monster, and an underperforming DC, to be one play away from beating a once Top 5 team on the road either says alot about how much BYU improved throughout the season, or how overrated Utah was because of their early cupcake schedule, or both.

The problem with stats is they're never inclusive enough to account for intangibles like playing AFA on the road in the second week of September with a very young team versus playing the Falcons the last week in October with a more experienced team.

Utah State beat the Cougars soundly before Hill was fired; no objective fan who watched the transformation of the BYU defense and offense since that early October loss would expect the Aggies to be favored if BYU and Utah State were playing today.

  • SportsFan Orem, UT
    Dec. 23, 2010 2:24 p.m.

I love how mr. stats Uteology is so clueless that he doesn't even know the final MWC standings.

BYU finished THIRD in the MWC, right behind Utah.

    TCU 8-0
    Utah 7-1
    BYU, SDSU, AFA 5-3
    CSU, UNLV 2-6
    UNM, Wyo 1-7

Besides, all your stats were proved meaningless when a supposedly "superior" Utah team had to rely on bunch of lucky breaks and blown calls to pull out a one point win at home over a rebuilding BYU team lead by a true freshman quarterback.

Utah finished the season 3-3 and the Utes were lucky it wasn't 0-6.

BYU got off to a rocky start with a young team and a very tough early schedule, but finished 5-1, and it could have very easily been 6-0.

SOS at this point in the season is completely meaningless, but keep beating that dead horse if it makes you feel any better about the Utes' dismal finish.

I love it how BYU fans think a 7-6 5th place mid-major MWC (according to the MWC official site) team is better than a 10-3 team.

    1) vs Cupcakes

    Utah 6-0
    BYU 6-1

    2) vs Teams with a winning record

    Utah 4-3
    BYU 1-5

Myth: Utah would have gone 7-6 with BYU's schedule.

FACT: SOS Rankings in the regular season

    #52 BYU 71.43
    #66 Utah 68.62

Stay tuned for final rankings, Utah's SOS will improve by playing #10 Boise and BYU will likely decline playing #89 UTEP.

So with similar SOS it is highly unlikely that Utah would have dropped to 5th place like BYU.

"Conference invites are meaningless as a measure of football success (see Colorado)"

Nonsense. Granted there are other considerations, but without Utah's BCS bowl victories, I doubt they would be going to the PAC-12.

I am not oblivious to BYU's success. But nobody can try to paint the past 5 (or 10 or 50 years) as superior to the other's success. You can present the facts to fit your argument, as can I. Really the two teams have been rather even over the long haul (especially recently), and trashing one is really only trashing the other.

  • SportsFan Orem, UT

Utah has shown this year that they'll fit in quite nicely with the middle to lower PAC 12 schools, no different than teams from the upper half of the MWC have been doing for years.

Unfortunately for Utah, there will always be a TCU-like Oregon, or Stanford, or USC at the top of the PAC 12 that will be a constant road block to the Utes ever winning a conference championship or playing in the Rose Bowl.

Middle of the PAC, 8-4 finishes fighting the Oregon States and Californias of the PAC for berths in the Las Vegas and Kraft Fight Hunger bowls will be Utah's fate in good years.

In rebuilding years, which are inevitable, the Utes won't even qualify for a bowl.

But at least they'll be getting a bigger paycheck, in a few years anyway.

This year's Las Vegas bowl simply but emphatically illustrated my season-long point: Utah was always highly overrated and was a total fraud when ranked at #5. If their schedule would have inserted Weber State for TCU and Idaho State for Notre Dame, they'd still be crowing about being #1. Then only if they could have played New Mexico State in a bowl game, the Utes dreams for an undefeated season could have been realized . . .

It is too bad Texas turned down the Pac10 offer. I would have love to see the MWC with Utah, TCU, BYU and BSU in it. Not sure if the BCS would have still given the MWC an auto bid but it would have been one heck of a football conference.

As a side note, Utah will not be the doormat of the Pac 12 conference. Every year the Pac has 2 or 3 good teams and the rest are very average. I see Utah winning more Pac10 games than losing next year. Barely.

    @TheSportsAuthority

    "BYU OUTPLAYED Utah"

Nonsense. Check the scoreboard. Then check the stats. The game was quite even, thank you. And the Utes won. The Utes won because it was BLOCKED!!! (One of the best executed defensive plays I have EVER seen, by the way.)

"BYU finished strong with a dominating bowl win"

Congratulations. Highland High would have beat UTEP also.

"Utah finished with a whimper with humiliating bowl loss to a non-AQ team and looking like a team that will be finishing regularly in the bottom half of the PAC 12."

And BYU had a humiliating loss to Utah State. We'll will take a hard loss to Boise St. and we'll grow from it.

How about we just look at the past 10 years. That makes it more relevant:

    Head to head:
    Utah 6
    BYU 4

    Conference Championships (outright)
    Utah 3
    BYU 3

    Top 25 Finishes
    BYU 5
    Utah 4

    Top 5 Finishes
    Utah 2
    BYU 0

    Bowl Games
    Utah 8 wins 1 loss
    BYU 4 wins 3 losses

    BCS Bowls
    Utah 2
    BYU 0

    BCS Conference Invites
    Utah 1
    BYU 0

It all depends on how you present the facts, my friend.

If the Utes had BYU's schedule:

They would have been crushed on the road against Florida State.

They would have lost an early season game at Air Force when the Falcons are always playing at their best.

They would have been crushed by Nevada, the only team to beat the bowl team that just destroyed the Utes.

They would have been crushed, just like they were, by TCU.

They would have lost AT BYU.

And they might have beaten UTEP in the New Mexico Bowl.

Final Record: 8-5 with a possible bowl win

I am embarrased that Utah represents our state the way they do. I'm talking about how they have to pick a fight before the last 2 games, seriously, shut your mouths and play the game. Do the coaches condone this kind of trash talking little brother behavior. The coaches just stand on the sideline while they let their team go all the way over to the other sideline to start some backyard fight before the game. Grow up and learn how to play with class.

You could see the Broncos didn't want to be there, and were able to finally get it going somewhat to get out with a win.

Okay, I paid my dues and read all the posts before me. My two observations, no venom, no spite:

BYU lost to Nevada early in the season by less than utha lost to BSU late in the season. Nevada and BSU proved they were pretty equal and BYU and Utah proved they were pretty equal.

Utah players proved at the beginning and end of the BYU game that some of them are out of control. They proved the same thing before and at the beginning of the BSU game. Great passion, lack of self discipline were enough to beat BYU. Barely. At home. They were not enough to beat BSU. What we saw with a BSU coach taking one of his bad boys to the wood shed for his bad behavior is what I expect and hope for from good teams - discipline.

    Easy answer.

Because a rebuilding BYU OUTPLAYED Utah on their home field and it took a bunch of lucky bounces and fortunate calls for the Utes to pull off a ONE point win.

BYU finished strong with a dominating bowl win and showing signs of being a very good team next season.

All those yards and they only had 26 points. How do you think that adds up? Because the Utes played a great game on defense. If anything, the Utes gave the game away with dropped passes and penalties.

True Freshman All American Brian Blechen, making a play on the ball to save an "easy" TD was a bright spot and if you missed that you really should stick to girls basketball.

The Utes were all talk, but no walk this season.

    As KSL put it:

The Utes "feasted on cupcakes, struggled versus good teams, and were slaughtered by great teams."

And one of those "great" teams, wasn't even that "great". (Notre Dame 7-5)

The biggest game in the history of Utah turned out to be the biggest beatdown in RES history.

Utah first trip to South Bend turned into a nationally televised meltdown.

A Top 25 Utah had to rely on lucky bounces and blown calls to pull off a one point win at home over a supposedly very mediocre 7-6 BYU.

The "epic" matchup between the top two BCS busters turned out to be a complete mismatch.

The Utes head to the PAC 12 having scored the fewest points in Las Vegas Bowl history and lucky not to have finished the season with 6 straight losses.

BYU was unlucky not to have finished the season with 6 straight wins.

Overall, the Utes just proved last night that they will fit right in with the Pac. Every year Pac teams lose their bowl games to MWC and WAC opponents. It might even become a Las Vegas Bowl tradition?

Three things I will be so happy to never hear again after this season from a Ute fan:

    1. The words "Ute" and "bowl winning streak" in the same sentence. Sorry Utah, that streak was built on beating mediocre teams in mediocre bowls.

    2. "Utah knows how to win the big games." Really? TCU, ND and Boise St. would probably disagree. You don't finish third or worse in the MWC seven of the last 10 years by winning all the big games. Ute fans keep complaining about the drops and mistakes, but this is just another indicator that the team was not ready for the big game.

    3. "Coach Whitt knows how to prepare his team for a bowl game. They plan to win." Really? Setting a record for the fewest (3) points EVER in the Las Vegas Bowl? I'm thinking that the Utes were outclassed last night and totally unprepared for what they were about to face.

Utah can't compete in the WAC let alone the PAC.
The Ute radio announcers during pre-game were even mentioning how 7 of BSU's opponents had losing records and they play in the lowly WAC. And that the Utesies match up very well pound for pound, speed for speed with BSU, seems to me #22 outran the entire Utesie team.

I will try to be a rational voice. I am tired of the venom from both BYU and Utah fans, honestly, it's exhausting. Couple of thoughts:
    1) BYU going independent is smart - they will only have a couple of tough games each year and all the rest will be patsies - (easy way to BCS)
    2) Utah will not be a Pac 10 doormat - they would have probably beaten everyone in the Pac 10 except Oregon and Stanford. With Utah and BYU so evenly matched over the years, I'm not sure why every BYU fan keeps claiming Utah will be a doormat. If BYU were going into the Pac 10, I do not think they'd be a doormat. I think BYU would compete for a Pac 10 championship probably 3 out of every 4 years.
    3) I wish Utah were going independent - honestly, it will be a lot easier going independent (2 tough games with 8 patsies) and getting to a BCS game than running the table in the Pac 10 and getting there.
    4) I actually can't stand the rivalry anymore, both fan bases are ridiculous.
    5) Utah, phenomenal season. BYU, phenomenal improvement.

Some crazy byu homers on here making fools of themselves for sure. No surpise.

Too many dropped passes, too many fumbles in big play situations. Shaky was all over the board and looked promising early but in the end, could not make plays when we needed them most. This was not Cain's fault either. He put the ball where they should have been caught.

24 points were left out there on dropped passes, penalties and a missed field goal! frustrating!

Some bright spots to remember though.....

-The defense holding Boise (and one of the best true qbs in college FB) to 26 points was amazing.
-Brian Blechen's play on the ball that caused the touch back shows the future of the defense and the promise that is there.

BSU is a great team and I am now a big Kellen Moore fan. This kid is going to be ready for the NFL. I would much rather have him than Cam Newton as my field general.

I had hoped Utah could shake off their past poor performances, but a few shots in the foot with penalties and dropped passes along with a BSU team that played well for the last 3 Qs ended that wonderful and historic Utah bowl run.

Thank you Utes for another memorable season and next year, please don´t execute so poorly. There really is no excuse for that.

A 10-3 season isn´t bad with a win over the rival, but next year we want to repeat that record, so keep on improving.

Curious to see where BSU ends up in the top 25. Utah will probably drop out, though a loss to a top 10 team shouldn´t really do that. We´ll see.

Something was really "off" for the Utes tonight and I think it had more to do with the receivers timing being off than it did with BSU being good. Yeah sure... Boise is good, but their performance against Utah was NOT overwhelming. How often does does Brooks, Smithson & Christopher drop passes right in "bread basket"? Brent Mussberger mentioned BYU and their recruitment of players from the Islands, his trivia question included " Quarterback U " as he called it in his praise for the players from the Y.
I saw a group of young men push their hearts, hopes, and physical endeavors on every single play. The defense was on the field a long time, opportunities were lost , passes were dropped, and a back-up quarterback was doing his best to move his team against one of the nations strongest defenses.
I saw teamwork , endurance, and 110% effort by every player on every play.
I gained value myself by being able to watch young men push their physical abilities to the limit and never giving up no matter how large or small, great or petty their assignment. All of those hours of practice on the field, in private practice,in the classroom, and the self motivation needed in this game will carry forward and strengthen their characters for the rest of their lives.

Utah choked in 4 of the last 5 games.

Against TCU, ND, BYU, and Boise they scored 30 total points. That is horrendous.

I think KW needs to call Bronco to see if he can evaluate the Utah offensive staff as well.

Lets hope Aaron Roderick days are numbered as the Ute offensive coordinator. I can't believe he's a step down from Ludwig.

Finishing 10-3 was really a disappointing year.

I hate to burst your bubble of amusement about how dead the Utah program supposedly is but I'd like to note a couple things.
    1. Our starting QB was injured and missed this game and was clearly not operating at 100% the last few games.
    2. We're still 10-3 which you might recall was our same record last year. We lost two games to top 10 schools, at least one of which is top 5. The Notre Dame thing was ugly I'll admit that.
    3. Why are we the PAC-10 doormat? Washington State, Colorado, UCLA are all terrible. Washington? They were the one team BYU was able to beat while they were failing up a storm the first half of the season (btw, glad you recovered, it's more fun to play BYU when they're a good team). Washington finished 5-4 in conference play, good for third in the conference along with USC. The PAC-10 has elite schools Oregon and Stanford but after that is just a bunch of B class schools in that cluster in the middle. Utah will join that category and a PAC-12 South title is certainly doable.

Insane fans always make me laugh because they let biased opinions get in the way of reason and logic. That goes for my fellow Utah fans as well as BYU and Boise fans. Most of this comment board seems to be BYU fans gloating over the fact that Utah is trending down while BYU is trending up. Reality check time. Yes, in the last 6 games Utah went 3-3 and BYU went 5-1. But all BYU did was beat the same crappy teams that made Utah look good early in the season.

    Last 6 opponents winning percentage:
    BYU 33% (25-50)
    Utah 73% (54-20)

Both teams had weaknesses this season that were exposed when they played good competition. Both coaches have plenty of work to do in terms of their coaching staffs and player personnel. Im sure Kyle and Bronco will figure it out.

Utah will struggle the next two seasons (8-5 record) but will likely become a 2nd tier PAC12 team (behind USC, Oregon, Washington??). BYU will go 11-2 every year while playing 6 awful WAC teams. My big question is will Utah (with PAC12 money and recruiting) eventually dominate BYU? Who knows.

Ahhh sports, I love the fans and mouthy players.

I think Boise State is a very very good football program and they sure have beat some pretty good teams over the years.

I also think Boise State deserved the Pac 12 bid over Utah. I just see more people tuning in to watch USC vs Boise State, than USC vs Utah, etc.

The Pac 10 should have investigated the TV ratings from week to week more and perhaps even the institutions more. I know Utah has their fan base, but it is much smaller than BSU's and much more fickle.

Utah's fan base would rather hunt and fish than watch a football game.

Cracks me up how anyone who calls out the whiny, overrated, self-important insufferable Ute players and fans after embarrassing their state on national television three-for-three times this year are assumed to be BYU fans. Last I checked, this game had nothing to do with BYU. It'll be tough to be a Ute fan next year when a different color of Cougars race you to the bottom, but hey--at least you can still hate on BYU.

  • Carnita's Cin Gordo Redlands, CA

    I feel so empty.

Larry Scott spoke of athletic prowess, and as the Utes head to the PAC, they get thumped in a mid major bowl by a WAC conference team, only managing 3 points (a new record).

To top the night off the Utes get beat from start to finish by a 6-4 Butler out of the Horizon League.

What do the Utes hope to accomplish by going PAC, except bringing in fans to watch other teams play?

I guess, every BCS league needs some cupcakes to get their teams to six wins to qualify for a bowl.

Maybe Utah games are like an unofficial "bye-week" for the premier teams in the PAC.

Well, getting out of the MWC just in time. BSU, TCU, BYU... The competition is just to tough. Now they will have excuses.

10-3 Season is nothing to be ashamed of. Utah's Defense played like a Ute defense should have and played a great game. You cannot expect to hold a team like Boise to under 3 points for 4 quarters. Offense needed to step it up today and they failed. Not Having Wynn hurt the team and it definitely showed, however, Cain should not be blamed for the lackluster performance on that side of the ball. Receivers across the board failed to haul in easily catch-able passes. This team will rally and we'll be competitive come next season in the Pac-12.

Utah got enough lucky bounces and fortunate calls to beat a 7-6 team at home by one point.

I'll take a 5-1, bowl winning finish in a rebuilding season over a fading 3-3, bowl losing season anyday.

All Utah proved by beating BYU 17-16 is that Utah was vastly overrated and BYU was underrated.

BYU's strong finish and quickly maturing QB bodes well for the Cougars as they head to Independence.

    Myths disproven this year:

    --Kyle always wins big games.

Biggest game in the history of Utah =
Biggest beatdown in the history of RES

--Utah knows how to win bowl games.

Only Top 15 bowl opponent Utah has played (besides Alabama) = Major Beatdown

Utah's bowl streak, like Utah's mid-season Top 5 ranking, was built on cupcakes.

The Ute defense played well at times and with the turnovers they created in the first half they should have been ahead by two touchdowns by half time. Too Bad Utes.

BSU 26 Utah 3=Big OOPS! I think Utah has more to worry about than just trying to get a quarterback to heal up.

What happened to sportsmanship, especially at a bowl game! What a ridiculous showing for both teams.

Utes were just outplayed by a better team.

The first quarter showed all the signs of a big upset waiting to happen. Lots of enthusiasm. Turnovers. But then the luck ran out.

It was not the humiliation suffered at the hands of TCU. That's a good thing.

Good luck to the Utes next year. Most of us can hardly wait to see how well they'll play.

Way to go Utah. Embarrass two conferences in one game. The MWC and the PAC 12.

Utes have a lot to work on if they will impress anybody next year. Of course, another way to read things: if Utah does well in the PAC 12 then we will all know how weak the PAC really is.

Utah is trending down. BYU is trending up.

Well I must admit, I expected more O from Boise, but I thought the same about Utah.

My prediction 52-24 was only a jab at how BYU handled UTEP, but Chris had to go for the bait and now he is out for a while.

Utah has much more talent than showed on the field, this loss can be put squarely on the Head Coach. He needs to rewind to the TCU game and figure out how to stop the unraveling of his team that started before that game. They must have started believing the press clipping and eying the polls.

Utah is not the first, it has happened to BYU and other programs that have started to believe the hype. Now they have to right the ship and move on.

I wish them luck in the future and I will make the 9 hour trip by car (maybe 1 hour in the plane)to watch the BYU-Utah game in Provo next year.

Good night and Merry Christmas to all.

Congratulations to Utah for holding Boise State to only 26 points. How many teams have done that in the past couple of years?

Got to be a bittersweet victory for the Broncos since they are one of the top 10 in the nation and snuffed out of the BCS money. Looks like they will bring their dominating program to the weakened Mountain West Conference and continue their winning ways. I would expect the Utes, Cougars and Frogs are happy about their exits so they won't have that automatic loss every year.

Utes Defense A-, QB B+, O-Line/WR D-. Ouch. If the line or receivers show up the Utes had a chance. Lots of dropped passes. O-Line holding, bad blocking, penalties.

Coach Whit had a great game plan. QB did everything to get the ball to his receivers.

Boise's Kellen Moore will play in the NFL. Very accurate and smart.
