    Just noticed the print edition sidebar is also online at the "Story graphic" link to the "Mind your manners" pdf. The finger trick is easier than the "solids left, liquids right" hint.

    Here's an easier mnemonic than the one in the print edition sidebar about which side the bread plate and drink glasses go (especially helpful at crowded banquet tables where there is no clear delineation between place settings:
    Make an "o" with the thumb and forefinger on each hand. The left hand looks like the lower case letter "b". That is the side with the Bread plate. The right hand looks like the lower case letter "d". That is the side with the Drink. B for bread, D for drink. Easy. Just don't think of dough/beverage.

    Regarding forks and place settings, the best tip I learned years ago is that you go from outside in.
    The salad and soup utensil would be on the outside, then the utensils for the meal itself would be next in, and so on. (as mentioned, dessert fork up on top.)

    But if you do an oopsies, you can still eat your dessert with your salad fork! A polite host (and co-guests!) would not call attention to the fact you used the wrong fork, if they even notice.
