May it be........
Finally. Why don't we make it into law here! It is so destructive.
Beautiful!! Now only if the U.S. would follow suit.
If not block them then tax them
This in no way limits anyone's freedom, and should be passed here. In fact, it enhances the freedom of those who do NOT want pornography, without denying access to those who desire it.
I am no fan of porn but I wish to point out that there really is no way to completely block porn. There are many ways that these filters can be easily bypassed by VPNs, proxy servers, file sharing, plus filters such as will not see everything. This move is just a feel good measure to those unable or unwilling to monitor children's internet usage. A move of this type can have negative consequences, such has false positives. Plus what other type of content can or will be blocked later? Dissenting speech perhaps?
While I laud the "concept" of forcing internet providers to "block" certain sites deemed to be "offensive", WHO gets to decide what is "offensive" and what is not? I certainly do NOT trust any governmental entity to make those kinds of decisions for me, nor will I give up one shred of my personal freedom in the name of "protection" or "security".
If certain politicians decide that certain religious beliefs and Conference transmissions are "offensive" will they be blocked as well? Absolutely, see how "censorship" actually works? Censor what is coming into your home YOURSELF, take personal responsibility and accountability for your own home people rather than being mediocre and lackadaisical about your own welfare.
Superbone,
But isn't it, in essence, another layer of filtering? And as such, it would be more than a "feel good measure".
Why not? Lets try something never done before and see what happen. The proposal to block porn at the dissemination sources is a promising approach.
We can always go back to the no filter policies if there are more problems created then solved.
Our vulnerable children and their future deserves better protection from the destructive impacts of porn.
I would support this type of measure here in the US. I think the statistics on pornography addiction and its results show that it is not just a matter of individual choice. Society as a whole is paying a huge price for individual rights.
Funny how many of the get-the-government-out-of-our-lives people are going to be happy about this.
This is long overdue. We have been tricked for long enough by those with illogical arguments regarding "freedom of speech" and "censorship".
Our lives have been invaded by these purveyors of offensive material - our home security is compromised by making it possible for minor children to access material we as parents deem inappropriate and harmful, and we have been charged to somehow stay a step ahead of these cunning business people who have no concern for anything except money.
It is time we enjoy the basic protection of being able to CHOOSE if this material is available to our homes and our children. This is an important freedom that we need have restored to parents and families.
We must adopt something similar here in the U.S.
I hate the thought of the government taking any more control than they all ready have. It breaks my heart at the loss of freedoms in this country.
BUT on this specific Issue, due to the damage pornography instigates I probably would like to see it implemented at the state level.
Please let it happen here! What a sick, sick world we live in. The legalistic jabber in some of these blogs is ridiculous. Can't you see what a wasteland of ruined lives this plague is creating across the world?
How can anyone defend this scourge? I don't care about the ACLU. Who defends the rights of the kidnapped sex slaves? Where are you with your legalisms then? Who defends the children whose interests are caught and trapped before they know right from wrong?
Shame on anyone who says this can't or shouldn't be done.
I re-emphasize:
This is NOT a LOSS of freedoms. It is a re-institution of freedom FROM something. It is a bit more difficult intellectually to grasp freedom FROM, however it is just as important as freedom to DO something.
Families must have their freedom "from" restored - freedom from having this invade their homes against their will.
We must think carefully about this concept and understand it. If we don't, the porn industry will continue to trick us into believing that their ability to invade our homes and gain an audience with our minor children is somehow their "right" in a "free" country.
This is deception and a cunning trick. This has nothing to do with their freedom, and everything to do with OUR freedom.
We must be free to control what is in our homes, and what our children access. Our freedom has been taken away for years and must be restored.
Don't be tricked.
Sorry, it won't work!
Besides a lot of technical issues (file sharing, overseas websites, etc.)censors have been trying to control what comes to us for centuries, and have wasted a lot of time in the process. Nut cases who want to obtain "porn" will get it in spite of what censors do.
To be sure porn is addicting, and I feel for those who have that addiction, but just like smoking, drugs, etc., the BEST thing we can do is try to control our own and our loved ones' behaviors.
The "web" can be used either for VERY GOOD purposes, or VERY destructive purposes, but, by its nature, it CANNOT be controlled!
Can a pornographer send unsolicited ads through the US Mail to private homes? If not, why not? Using the logic of some we should just expect parents to take the responsibility of getting to the box first and throwing the stuff out before the kids see it. Who decides what is allowed on network television? We already allow government regulators the power to prevent broadcasters from airing pornographic content on the public airwaves. How is the internet different?
While I see the benefit let me ask you where this will lead?
Now if an image gets through what will happen, perhaps a law suit and this will increase liability on the service provider. I'm certain that incident monitoring would lead to increased Government fines this is a TAX and you all would pay for it.
I'm an advocate of the free market approach If this was so desirable a service provider with web filtering would be in the market and would be raking it in. I would like to use it but I'm certain that it is not truely available except to a small market at best.
just freely thinking a better law would be that service providers should be forced to provide the choice to customers filter or unfiltered. where the Account holder (parent) would decide and have to verify any account changes.
But as usual law makers are more interested in taxation and pointed legislation than in truely protecting the defenseless children against parasites such as Porn and tabacco
The fact that the article states that you would have the option to opt to receive the porn-trash, should calm some of you so called "free thinkers".
Meanwhile, come and attend one of my classes, or anyone's classes on addiction recovery and tell me it doesn't destroy families, marriages and societies.
If this article stirs up other ideas to eliminate access to porn, then perhaps more good ideas and solutions will surface.
Not to mention that it will send the message to any casual curiosity seekers, that porn is addictive and destructive, and should be eliminated from our society.
And of course for those who insist that it's not fair to limit your choices and options in life, because porn provides such a meaningful resource in your life, then you'll always be able to access it.
Can you tell how I feel about porn?
Time to move to the UK?
