I am deeply saddened by this event. The Tabernacle history is part of my own, and an important part of Utah County's heritage.
How on earth did this happen? We hear every week about fires destroying one piece of property after another and, of course, little or no journalistic curiosity or investigation, no expression of practical concern, just more taxes to replace what carelessness lost.
Way to sympathize, empathize, and express support there, Madison.
You stay classy now.
Madison, I'm kind of hoping we don't see more taxes to replace this one.
Fame at last!
Anyway, that it is sad is obvious; plenty of people have bemoaned the event. I do too. I am Mormon and I don't like our sacred buildings burned down. This has already occurred three or four times in Utah (the burning of sacred Latter-Day Saint buildings) and these other church burnings have all been perpetrated by arsonists.
I want to see something done about it in addition to the expressoin of empathy etc which has been so well and so repeatedly expressed.
I also agree with "Hutterite" that taxes might not be be appropriately applied in the case of private property but only public buildings, but I was also addressing the larger issue of arson. Good point Hutterite.
Taxes would not be used to replace a church building. The church self-insures it's buildings and will elect to either rebuild or not. It will not affect taxes in any way.
I hope it was not arson. It is bad enough to think of it as a tragic accident. Ive never been as affected by a building burning before. Very very sad. Even if they rebuild, we have lost part of our history.
I think the building was too important a part of the community (and used way too often) for the Church not to rebuild it. I do hope they can salvage the towers and make it look and feel a bit like the old one (except more comfortable seats and no poles blocking your view).
I really do believe the Church will rebuild it.
