Great game for BYU, they need to finish up with lineup details though. AZ will want revenge for having Jimmer own them with 49 points by himself, and a 30 point victory at AZ.
Go Y
"Physical"? "Scrappy"? "Battle"? "Held off"? Those words do not seem to correspond with this game and the other things the author described. Jimmer sat out the final 8 minutes of the game...that should tell you all you need to know. BYU didn't hold off Hawaii. It wasn't close at all. How about that Hawaii was able to pull within 12 at one point in the 2nd half? That should tell you it wasn't a battle. Please don't try to make it something it wasn't.
Great game. I got to watch it on BYU TV streaming over the internet for the first time. Good riddance MTN network. It was great to see. Jimmer is a really fun player to watch and always looks to finish and make something when the play does not work out. He gets points when no one else would attempt.
Hawaii's big men did not deter the BYU players at all. They played their game anyway. The transition game for the Y is what really put the Cougars up for good. Hawaii could not keep up with
the early lead.
Go Cougars.
Smartest move of the night was when Joston Thomas made the front end from the free throw line, then held a finger to his lips to silence the crowd.
He then proceded to miss the second, threw up an air-ball, lost the ball out of bounds, and was just fun to watch him fall apart.
However, it did help to get the crowd interested in a rather "lackluster" game.
Hawaii is an athletic team, but never threatened BYU. Too many individual egos on the floor.
It was nice to see Frank there to watch Gib coach, but Gib has no control over the team.
The coogs are welcome to play in the North end of the valley anytime, at the very "neutral" ESA.
The refs were confused tonight. They didn't know what kind of game to call. First it was a foul if you breathed on someone, then it was no foul if you took someones head off. When Abou was blindsided by a pick and a forearm shiver and the ref at first called the foul on him, you knew something fishy was going on. It took a conference to make the simplest call.
Not really impressed with the refs...again. It was almost as if they were trying to make it a competitive game by handcuffing the tempo and style of play. Just let them play. I saw the Hawaii players real frustrated because they didn't know what kind of call they were going to get. BYU had those incredulous looks on their face and they would have protested more if they didn't think they could over come it.
i got to watch the cougs for the first time this season and they will have a GREAT team this year... i watched the game on byutv and if byu is to go independent next year, with their state of the art broadcasting capability they need to have better production. if it wsn't the fault of kbyu i apologize to them. need to sharpen up the tv team. GREAT game otherwise. go byu!!
Lets see stats more often during games, and correct/updated stats at that.
Go Y
Congratulations to Coach Rose and the team for a terrific game. Go Cougars!
Hawaii has not been called the "Rainbow" Warriors for a number of years now.
@Sponge Bob:
An expert like you ought to write his own column.
When are they gonna learn? You dbl/trpl team Jimmer and Jackson, you're gonna get burned by da Bigs or da Bench! Looking good, Cougars!
I watched on BYU TV from the Far East. It will be nice to lose the Mtn and get more games. The officials really struggled with inconsistent calls both ways, and that made it a choppy game. Plus it is always more fun to watch the starters play. Rogers and Magnusson both did a good job - hats off to them both - but with better officiating they would not have had those kinds of minutes. It is nice to know we can survive a poor officiating crew, though, because it will happen again.
Lots of TX fans. See y'all against TCU.
BYU has a nice squad, but I see some selfish / wasted plays that need to be corrected. Jimmer / Jackson had four or five trips where they were bound and determined to hoist up a shot no matter what. The team needs to minimize those moments of weakness.
By the way, the MWC / MVC challenge is 7-1 in favor of the MWC with Air Force playing today. The conference looks very capable this year.
If only the MWC didn't have those bottom half weak teams to bring the conference down. You know the ones: Wyoming, TCU, Utah.
We could be a dominate league this year with some very good teams. You know the ones: BYU, UNLV, SDSU
RPI will be great for the Cougars except the Utah game will bring it down.
Joe Schmoe - Your cheap shots at the Utes are not needed. Focus on the Cougars winning and how they played and not on cheap shots at Utah.
Cougar Passion
"Hawaii has not been called the 'Rainbow' Warriors for a number of years now."
Incorrect my friend.
In a bizarre marketing strategy, Hawaii lets their teams pick their own names. This has led to the basketball, swimming and diving, and tennis teams retaining the team name of "Rainbow Warriors"; the baseball team adopted the name "Rainbows"; and the football, golf, and volleyball teams have adopted the name "Warriors".
@DH48
When is truth a cheap shot?
Utah fans have taken enough cheap shots at BYU this year to last a lifetime. One or two ("perceived cheapshots") lobbed their way during the basketball season won't hurt anyone, even if it did hurt your feelings.
I think Ben from Centerville said it best...
"Need a tissue"?
Joe Schmoe & Veritas Aequitas way to show your obsession with Utah by speaking your obtuse hate against them on a thread regarding a story that had nothing to do with Utah. Maybe it is that NC that Utah has and you don't in B-Ball? Maybe the countless more sweet 16s, final 8s, two NC championship game (one won, one lost) that Utah has? Enjoy the WCC. Utah fans will sure enjoy playing PAC 12 teams such as Arizona and UCLA instead of WCC teams such as St. Agnes of the Poor.
Pebble of the Marne
Do you even understand your utter hypocrisy at calling BYU fans "Utah obsessed"
ON A BYU ARTICLE!
It's going to be another long year for Utah basketball, and as opposed to the dozens of Utah trolls who slam BYU football on EVERY BYU or Utah article, only a handful of BYU fans will even bother paying any attention at all to Utah basketball.
btw, BYU has won just as many "national championships" in basketball as Utah.
Utah 1944 NCAA, 1947 NIT
BYU 1951 NIT, 1966 NIT
