"As always, Utah's best is only 2nd best!"

All those ancient accolades mean nothing in the modern age of college football.

If they did BYU wouldn't be on the outside looking in for a place at the BCS conference table.

But, hold tight to those memories, you will need them as you watch the Utes take their rightful place on the main stage of the college football.

The Utes did not hand pick their opponents.. that was done by the bowl committees.
How is there so many soothsayers, crystal ball readers and fortune tellers down in Utah County. All of these false profits seem to be just playing Roulette.
Alabama was legit, GT ranked 21 , USC was beaten 10-6, Navy was a strong team.
    BYU , 2 bowl games in a row-Shazzaam, What a feat !
Utah -- going for 10-- Yep ten wins in post season.
Don't forget that, with all of your insults the University of Utah poured 1.5 MILLION $$$ into your ungrateful coffers. BYU's contribution 0-$
You dish up lies and criticism but you take the money without so much as a thank you.
Show a little courtesy on occasion and maybe, just maybe, the golden rule may find a place in those teeny weeny hearts, or common courtesy may get a hand hold.
I'm not holding my breath though---surprise me!
Don't be giving the Utes excuses about a one point win when you have lived by it..I.E
Washington.. excessive celebration on the Washington game and UCLA 17-16 one a tip.
    Pathetic whiner posts. Again !!!!

BYU and the Quest for Sports Relevance! Lose to UTEP and you will have a new quest... a Quest for Sharp Objects! Nothing makes a statement about going independent like a New Mexico Bowl berth! What, did the "Shamwow Bowl" pass on your team? BYU looks less like an industrious football machine trailblazing off on it's own to reinvent the game, and more like the scrawny geek who snuck off to play with his Star Wars figures and fingerpaint.

@Lia - You're pretty good at recycling old content over ,and over again. Too bad it's all a fraud, like your #6 ranking earlier this year.

Since you mentioned scoreless, if you're keeping track...which i know you are, in the last 8 quarters of football against BYU, Utah was held scoreless in 6 of them.

There are some seriously disturbed Y haters on these boards.

    From my point-of-view:

    1) BYU fans are not "rejoicing" over going to the New Mexico bowl. They see the game as a fitting end to a season of struggle and adversity that will serve as a reward and springboard into next year.

    2) BYU fans are not as devastated losing to the U this year based on the reality of the seasons both teams experienced. They are however disappointed in the vagaries of the bounce of the ball and the twists of the calls.

    3) BYU fans are eager for independence from the MWC and its restrictive coverage and understand that playing some WAC teams during the first few years is simply a scheduling necessity.

    4) BYU fans are more willing to put the animosity of the rivalry behind them as affiliations change. They are dismayed that U fans seem to have a need to nip and pick at the Y's heels as they leave to the PAC 12 with a grandiose sense of themselves which seems contrary to the reality of their team's success as they end the year.

  • Eddie Syracuse, UT
    Dec. 3, 2010 10:49 a.m.

Do you wonder why all the U fans are still beating their chests? It is because they know what the next years will bring. Stand on their hill and shout loud about how good they are knowing that they will never make it to another bowl game in the foreseeable future. I can't wait until next year to see the "Mighty Utes" in the middle, or lower, of the Conference of Champions. By the way, How many from the Conference of Champions are going to bowl games this year? That's what I thought.

  • Lia Sandy, UT

    Hey Muss,

That "Lucky" win was because the Y failed to come out for the 4th quarter.
The "lucky" Utes held BYU scoreless in the 4th, and rallied PAST them.
Then the "lucky" Utes amped themselves up for a great play on arguably the most important play in their history.
The "lucky" Utes didn't find that win under a rock, they made it happen.

No wonder no REAL conference wants BYU.

They want teams composed of real men, with fans who don't blame the refs after every loss.

Actually, more accepting the reality of the situation, rather than whine about it.

I'm fine withe NM Bowl. Looking forward to what Jake, Juice, Van Noy, etc. will do, and give me another chance to watch Andrew Rich and the res of the seniors.

I mean, if I lived in Tooele (for example), people might say that I had lowered my standards, I'd be fine.

Sometimes we just need to accept our realities.

Of course they're mediocre... no one disputes that. Robert Anae the O.C. is the reason why they are mediocre. But take out the blocked kick and the disputed knee down calls as off setting and it boils down that BYU gave you the game...no actually Anae gave you the game by going 4th and inches in the opening minutes of the 3rd quarter and not taking the easy fieldgoal. Regardless... Whitingham knows that the Utes really struggled and came out ever so lucky. I'm not trying to take anything away from Utah. They're a good team... but this was not their finest hour and anybody in their right mind could see that. BYU has some really young and very good talent. It's just too bad that right now they just don't have the coaching staff to match that talent. The one positive for them out of this is that they get another two weeks of practice and another game. All things considered...that is a real plus... even if they wind up playing UTEP. Maybe they'll get lucky and Anae will take a job with Portland State before 2011.

Interesting that all these ute fans are once again on a byu article putting down a 6-6 team that shutout their overrated team for 3 quarters. Let me remind you ute clowns that it took byu miscues, lucky bounces and a blown gift call for the overrated utes to win by 1 point on their home field. You bashed on the Vegas bowl and now your team is playing in it. Funny thing is the Vegas Bowl wanted Notre Dame over utah, but settled on Utah when they couldnt land Notre Dame. It will be interesting to see how many ute fans actually show up for their bowl game. Byu fans will represent their team because they always do no matter what. New Mexico Bowl, Vegas Bowl, it doens't matter BYU fans will be there and support their team.

You think you're only mocking, but the reality is, of the two programs, only Utah counts wins, AND LOSSES, against high school teams and worse in their lifetime record.

    Salt Lake High
    Diamond Butchers
    9th Cavalry
    All Hallows
    Carlisle Indian School
    Ogden High
    Fort Douglas
    Hawaii National Guard
    Oregon Short Line
    Utah Alumni
    St. Vincent's
    12th Infantry
    Fort Warren
    Honolulu All Stars

All on the list of illustrious teams the Utes count in their overall record.

It's hilarious how Utah fans are spending so much time and effort trying to put down a 6-6 team.

If BYU is such a pathetic team, what does that say about the Utes who had to have about half a dozen lucky breaks just to pull off a one point win against the Cougars at home?

    and to johnjacob;

The hypocritical u fans are out in full force again I see. Funny, how BYU is a blown call away from a losing season, but by that same logic BYU is a blown call away from being right back @ 6-6 with a win over a #20 over-rated u team.

Funny, how many of u were whining not too long ago that BYU should do the honorable thing and forfeit that game if they had any integrity, and yet now it's ok for u fans to rush the field after a 1 point win in a game they should probably be asking their own team to forfeit if they had any integrity. (your argument, not mine).

The same standards should apply in both cases, but you're all too blinded by hate to see the logic.

it appears the cougar faithful have lowered their standards to the point of rejoicing over being bowl eligible and getting the chance to play another 6-6 team. No need to raise them, as going independent will mean they can make the New Mexico Bowl their home away from home like vegas was, as they play for just 6 wins each year to become bowl eligible.

As for the opponent, didn't want to play the Bingham Miners for fear of losing, Park City Miners must have been busy, so that left the UTEP Miners. Ya!

  • AZguy Phoenix, AZ
    Dec. 2, 2010 3:23 p.m.

Why all the BYU-haters? Man, it would make you seem you are worried more about the Cougs than your own team. A 6-6 record is what it is-50%. 10-2 is awesome for the Utes and a well deserved top 20 finish. Good luck in Vegas.

I think the U would have gone to Vegas regardless of how last week's game turned out. A 9-3 U team would be more attractive than a 7-5 Y team making it's 5th straight appeance.

I am proud that the Cougs fought off adversity this year and finished strong. For that, I will be traveling to NM to support BYU and not complaining-though I will freeze my tail off.

Pulling yourself up by your boot straps when you are down is a sign of the heart of this team and that the program is in good hands. I am not satisfied, but it could have been worse. I am thrilled with the last four years and happy how this year is ending for the Cougs. Here's hoping for good things in the future. Go Cougs!

What bothers U more, that BYU has a history prior to 2004 that is worth remembering or that BYU's recent history nearly exceeds Utah's entire history?

BYU's four Top 25 finishes and four 10+ win seasons in the last four years are only one shy of Utah's all-time Top 25 and 10+ win seasons.

    Bronco has two MWC championships.

    Kyle one.

Bronco leaves the MWC undefeated against New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado State and UNLV.

Kyle has lost to every team in the MWC.

Even with Utah's two BCS wins last decade, BYU still finished with more Top 25 finishes.

    BYU 5
    Utah 4

BYU had another player added to the College Football Hall of Fame this year.

Utah doesn't have a single player in the College Football Hall of Fame.

Utah fans like to make a big deal about beating BCS teams and Top 25 teams, but the reality is, those accomplishments are already factored into the only things that really matter, final records, final rankings, national individual awards, and championships.

During the heyday of Utah football, the Utes are still struggling to keep pace with BYU.

If not you would not deserve to be on the team. It must be easy to judge from your non-participation status. Also there is no irrelevant game when you are the player. It always cracks me up how BYU fans needs to keep reaching back 5 or 30 years into their football futility when there here and now is what got the Utes and TCU into major conferences and BYU basically going to the WAC.

Keep breaking your arms to pat yourselves on the back for 6-6 Cougar fans, mediocrity is a disease that lets you accept mediocrity as greatness and accepts losing as acceptable.

Let's get some things straight. "whatever his name is' is still unblocked" just doesn't resonate like "magic happens" or "Harline is still open."

And seriously, because most real football fans respect Utah as a good, not great, football team; and because most real BYU football fans are just pleased that our team is better now than we were in Logan, that blocked punt just isn't as devastating as some of you are hoping.

And finally, many of us true blue BYU fans tuned in every week for the beginning beatings, do I really believe that there are true blue BYU fans that will skip the bowl game just because it is the lowly NM bowl and even if it IS UTEP?

can any BYU fan honestly say that they are excited about BYU playing in some obscure bowl in New Mexico (of all places) and against UTEP of all teams? Even if they win it means nothing and UTEP could easily beat BYU with their passing attack. I'm not suggesting BYU should have turned the bowl invite down but I wouldn't be bragging about it. This bowl is a joke ... the only thing worse than playing in the bowl is losing it. Nothing to gain and much to lose. Actually there is some to gain - the 750k will be split amoung all the MWC teams so there will be some small pay out at least... but not a whole lot.

Reality check to Utes bashing on BYU going to the New Mexico Bowl: #1, Utah is a blocked field goal (or bad replay review, or bad bounce on a shanked punt, or drop by Ashworth, or weird fumble by Q, or bad call on 4th and 1, or tipped ball in the endzone) away from being in New Mexico. #2, until 3 weeks ago, you were talking BCS bowl game and possible national championship and now you're heading to Vegas (you know that bowl that you have bad-mouthed each of the last 5 years when BYU was invited). #3, a 6-6 BYU got invited to a bowl; no way a 6-6 Utah team would get invited to a bowl.

Have a little cheese with your whine.

Bowl games are simply money-making schemes for local chambers-of-commerce and television execs. Teams are invited based on how many fans they'll bring and how many viewers will tune in to watch the games. Being "deserving" isn't, and never has been, a requirement.

The New Mexico bowl is just as "legitimate" as any other bowl.

If the New Mexico bowl bothers you so much, simple solution, demonstrate a little self-control and don't watch it.

Congrats to the Cougars on making it to the bowl. The NM bowl actually has a decent payout and anytime you get more college football---it's a good thing.

While I don't think they should add more games (allowing sub 0.500 teams in for instance), I think having all these bowl games is great for the coaches, players and fans. If you don't want to watch UTEP vs BYU then do something else.

Trollpolice, there are a lot of things that ripped my heart out this year: 40 point loss to TCU and the blown chance of beating ND. But let's be realistic, just as Ute fans have some difficulty in letting go Beck-to-Harline, there will be PLENTY of Cougar fans who will not let the "block party" game go. Momentary disappointment? Doubt it.

I think that pretty much sums up all most all of the history of Utah's participation in College Bowl Season, doesn't it?

This isn't a really exciting match-up or location, but I will probably still TiVo the game and watch it later.

Two things are important: 1) 15 extra practices for the youngsters to get ready for next year and 2) finishing with at least a winning record.

Bowl money contributions are made back to the conference after travel expenses are paid, so there won't be much left to share anyway.

I did't get the whole rebuilding year idea at BYU. As if we just won a BCS bowl and our coach went to the SEC and the starters skipped graduation to go to the NFL. Didn't happen. The year is what we have. A quarterback that didn't get the time he deserved at the beginning of the year and saved the team when the coach finally picked the starters, three games too late, and got us to a bowl.

The money from this bogus bowl will not even come close to reimbursing any team from participating in it. Who sanctions these bowls anyway? The mere fact that any team winning 6 games to qualify for one of these namby pamby post season games is a criteria is very dubious. Over 50 bowls? Come on! This cannot add to the prestige of any football program. Can I create a bowl game and invite teams to it? All of this just blows me away.

Lot's of clueless, jealous sniping from the peanut gallery, but the fact is playing in any bowl game is beneficial to the program. 15 extra practices, plus live game experience. A chance to give some bench players some playing experience and another 3 weeks for Heaps to work on timing and reads with his receivers.

    Disco Vega and fan29

You two obviously don't understand anything about college football. I'm sure ESPN is fine with BYU having a down year while rebuilding. The bean counters at ESPN understand that long-term trends also include a few declines in the stock along the way.

BYU has been a perennial Top 25 team since 1977. ESPN execs are at all concerned with one down year.

Texas didn't even qualify for a bowl this year. Florida, Miami, and USC also had down years, and Michigan and Notre Dame have been mediocre for several years. You don't see anybody writing the obituaries for those programs.

The more the BYU haters rip on BYU for one down year, the more they prove just how clueless they are about the cyclical nature of major college football.

From a player stand point any bowl game is good since it provides another chance to play.

From a team stand point BYU can finish either 7-6 (winning record) for the year or 6-7 (losing record) for the year. Also the program does get some money after the 750k is divided amoung MWC members.

From a fan stand point and playing UTEP ... yuk!! I doubt alot of fans will even watch this.

I think this hi-lites the problem with college football and the lack of a playoff system. This game means ZERO and playing in New Mexico is pretty lame too. Finishing 6-6 BYU shouldn't even be playing post season anyway. The vast majority of the bowl games mean nothing and the only people that watch them are the local fans of the teams.

  • eagle Provo, UT

Though BYU can certainly afford, most bowl invites are monetary losers for the teams that go there. The pay out for the New Mexico Bowl isn't even a million dollars per team. Usually all the conference teams get a share of this money (so that's why the MWC is happy TCU gets to go to the Rose Bowl and Boise State and WAC fans are crying about going from the Rose Bowl to the Vegas Bowl). By the time you hold extra practices, travel, lodge, wine and dine (but not in BYU's case, just dine) a lot of program, especially programs that have longer distances to travel to said bowl game, they lose money. Usually, the big winners in the non BCS conferences are the teams like Wyoming who just get money from the other teams that go bowling, especially BCS bowling or going to a bowl that has a decent payout which the Vegas and New Mexico bowls don't. It is true that programs going to bowl games get some additional exposure, additional practices, etc. and fans get a nice excuse to go to Albuquerque.

Wow, Congrats BYU, I guess? 6-6 going to a bowl to face maybe a UTEP Team 6-6 who loses 5 of it's last 6 games and going to the New Mexico Bowl and Coaches are excited. Expectations seem a little low for a Team going Independent next year.

If you decline this invite you would save money. No way the money made will cover your costs of taking all the team and their families. I bet ESPN is excited to see you play in this bowl, just not sure this is what they expected from their support of BYU going Independent!!!

I am proud that BYU did not fold on the season. It would have been easy to do and could have taken a couple of years to recover.

    BYU fan here.

If in deed it's UTEP that the Y plays.

I'm planning a root canal for that day.

Rather not go to a bowl game.

NCAA is a joke. There are too many bowls that mean absolutely NOTHING and dilute the fun of the post season. Although my team would be left out I would say you should AT LEAST have a winning season to qualify for a bowl. And I'm sick of them being named after the sponsors.

15 bowls MAX (leaving 34 teams out in the cold) would be great, and make for a fun, meaningful, and worth while post season.

What's nice though is that if it only takes a 6-6 season to qualify then our little brothers on the hill should qualify 50% of the time for the Las Vegas Bowl in the PAC 10. The other 50%....Waaa Waaaa Waaaa.

It is interesting that some Utah fans have criticized BYU for going to the Las Vegas Bowl. Even a couple of fans indicated during this season that BYU would be stuck with the Las Vegas Bowl, while they, the Utes, would be BCS bound. I think several Utah fans need to tone down their enthusiasm a little bit and wory about their own teem rather than BYU. I hope BYU draws Fresno State, too. My wife & I served a FT mission there. The Cougs had a rough season this year and still got a bowl game. The Utes are so overrated this year its insane. They are projected to give TCU a good game and got beat by 40(BYU only got beat by 28). Then they get run over by ND almost lose to SDSU and then steal a victory from the Cougs. Mediocre teams going to meaningless bowls. A playoff is needed. College football has been hijacked by the BCS. Instead of a playoff involving the bowls, you get 35 Bowl Champions and 35 bowl losers, not to mention the so-called title game that is 66% opinion based, and not earned in a playoff of conference champions and a few at-large teams.

Talk about sweet-n-sour or sugar-n-spice. This season was both bitter (1-4) and sweet (5-2). I can only see two good things about this invite ... 1) practice time for the Jr, So, and Fr. 2) a modest reward for finishing strong. Otherwise, a 6-6 season is NOT the results this cougar fan wants to revisit any time soon.

I'm glad they get valuable practice time and one more game under their belt. They have shown great character to stay motivated when they knew halfway through the season that this was their new goal.

I didn't think Ute fans would be eager to smack talk after their dominating, #5 ranked, NC2010 worthy stretch over the last four games.

A Bowl game does 3 things:

    1. It gives a team more practices for their younger players.

    2. It gives the players and fans a reward, and a chance to end the season on a winning note.

    3. It adds money and exposure to the program.

  • eagle Provo, UT
    Dec. 1, 2010 7:39 p.m.

    Relax The Deuce:

The Cougs aren't the only 6-6 team going to a bowl, they will have plenty of others as company. Their likely opponent will be Fresno State or some other team of similar ilk, a team they should be able to beat.

The last team to turn down a bowl game I can remember was Notre Dame under Lou Holtz, who was 8-4 or something like that. Of course, Holtz (and his players who actually voted not to go) had higher standards of performance than ND of today, BYU or the vast majority the other programs accepting bowl invitations. But with 35 bowls needing 70 teams, BYU is going to be needed to fill one of those slots and they are as deserving as many others.

Now if you want to reduce the bowls down to 20-25 like in former times, that is another discussion...

Is this even real? A 6-6 team accepting a Bowl game invitation. This was anything but a successful season. Yes, there are signs of improvement but there is a long way to go and a bowl game does not make a lot of sense to football fans for this team. A winning record should be required. The Cougars need a better rushing attack. The passing attack looks like there is a sign of life to it as players mature. But I would not be waving the flag high for this invitation. It's time to get real, go back to the drawing board and reevaluate players and coaches and start rebuilding. Yes, the team is moving in the right direction but alot needs to be done before going independent.
