Utah Utes, BYU football: Several Utah, BYU players earn all-MWC honors

As a Cougar fan, I think utah got hosed on a couple of selections. Burton and Siliga should have been first team selections. Siliga didn't even make the second team, what a joke. Ya think the MWC is a little bitter about losing the utes and cougs. Too many of you are worried about Shaky not getting the first team selection, he was good, but way inconsistant. Kerley was always consistant. The bigger snubs are of Siliga and Burton.

Why not just take the Utah roster and sub it for the all conference.

If you think back, plenty of BYU fans were wondering how the team would do without all-timers Hall, Pitta, and Unga. So, your statement about not worrying whether the starters who were leaving were talented seems ridiculous.

And it is obvious BYU struggled this year until the newcomers gained experience and the rebuilding of the program began in earnest after the Utah State game. So, the worry was valid.

As for the Utes' future, I don't think it is as bright as most fans thought four weeks ago. Every time you denigrate BYU, just think of the game last Saturday.

The only thing U fans have on BYU is a one-point scoreboard in a game at home between a previously #5 ranked team, predicted by posters as National Championship 2010 material, against a BYU squad that at points this season was statistically on track for one of the worst years in three decades.

Spin it how you want to. BYU and the U are pretty much mirror images now...what matters most is the direction they head in the future.

Word on the street is buy BYU, sell Utah.

"How many BYU players will be all conference next year?"

Lol! the exact same number as the Yewts will have on the Pac 12 all conference team, ZERO! The Yewt defense was too small and too slow this year, Burton is a product of that. 2nd team is a gift. I'm surprised you weren't whining for Kwhitt to be named coach of the year.

I noticed you're wondering where Asiata and Wide are, everyone else is wondering where they were in the TCU, Notre Dame, SDSU, BYU, etc games. I think their tendency to disappear in big games is what cost them.

The one legitimate complaint you have is Shaky Smithson not getting Special Teams Player of the Year and 1st team KR/PR. He destroyed Kerley year and got robbed.

@ Michigancoog You sound like a broken record from TDS. You are just repeating what Y'ners said last year and the year before.
Somehow, you cewgs always think the UTES will be in bad shape when they lose a few starters, but somehow, there is no mention of anytime when the cewgs lose some starters.
Kind of makes it obvious that the cewgs don't have any starters worth worrying about when they leave.
Utes will be at the top again next year...Even with their new (3 and 4 star) players.
You cewgs will take second in your new league next year.
    Go Utes!!!!!

Didn't Shaky break Kerley's conference for punt returns? With all due respect to a very god TCU player, there's no justice in Shaky's snub.

Congratulations to all the great players who made this year's all-MWC lists!

I think that Shaky deserved the special teams player of the year, but I won't take anything away from Kerley, he is a great player.

How does Burton not make first team? The MWC is going to look foolish when the its first team selections aren't anywhere to be found on the All-American ballots and Burton receives honors. He is one of the top corners in the NCAA.

Also how does Cox make first team and Siliga only gets honorable mention. I would take Sealver over So'oto any day of the week. Siliga probably got dinged because of the depth Utah has at tackle.

Heaps performance the second half of the year should have gotten him honorable mention. The kid can play.

I am a Ute fan but it is obvious that Wynn has problems. He is a girly-boy...runs for cover when a play breaks down. His passing skills are all over the place. Utah needs the following.

    1. New quarterback ( a man this time)
    2. Defensive line who can put pressure on
    opposing quarterback
    3. DB's who can react to ball before it is thrown
    4. New off. co-ordinator who can call more than
just tackle left and tackle right
    5. Go-to possession receiver at least 6'3

I have to agree about Brandon Burton being left out of the 1st team. How can a MWC player projected by national scouts to go in the 1st round of the nfl draft be on a 2nd team? He's probably the first MWC player to be drafted. Oh well, onward to the PAC 12.

Congrats to all the selections. But....seriously, Hillman is a great freshmen runningback for SDSU but when you have two NFL wide receivers who require so much attention from a defensive unit, it is pretty easy to see how Hillman was able to pile on some yards. I don't know how Brian Blechen (and even Heaps) were not ahead of Hillman for Freshmen of the Year. My vote is for Blechen, he is amazing!

...Asiata and Wide? 1st team? How do ya'll figure? Less than 700 yards when 7 others ahead of them have more yardage? Huh? Over Hillman, Wesley, or AFA's Clark who were 1000 yard rushers? Just a little bit too much red koolaid boys. Even Di Luigi won't come close to be deserving...2nd team honors, Yes.

What are you TUN folks going to do next year for a running game, to keep Mr. Wynn from freaking out? I see Utah's defense as the saving grace for what could be a disaster for Utah next year. Losing your top 2 OL players along w/ 2-3 backup could also spell disaster...better hope that luck is on your side next year, cus your gonna need it!

    Re: PAC12South

I agree about Asiata and Wide. I think it would have been fitting to see one make first team and the other make second team. However, I'm glad they picked my boy DiLuigi for second team. He would finish the season with well over 1,000 yards rushing if he got more than 10-15 carries a game.

I don't know what you mean by the last line of your post. If you are trying to prove a point by saying that BYU won't have any next year because we are going Independent I don't get what it proves. You are just like the other yewts.. jealous that BYU can go Independent and actually pull it off! something that Utah couldn't do because they don't have a national fan base, a storied program (that goes beyone the last 6 years) and wouldn't have got a deal with ESPN.

The Utes cannot get out of this conference fast enough. Burton is one of the top 5 corners in the country, but only made the MWC second team. Give me a break. Sealver was totally snubbed too. He will be starting in the NFL, Rick Ricketts and Josh Biezuns, and will be lucky to be invited to the combine. Where is the love for Asiata and Wide? These are two phenomenal seniors who only had low numbers because they are on the same team.

How many BYU players will be all conference next year?

It was very impressive to turn a program around from a 1-4 start too but I guess they want you to be great out of the blocks. Patterson has done a super job and deserves Coach of the Year too. We have been very priveledged to have Patterson, Whittingham and Mendenhall these last five years. How about Thompson as commissioner of the year??? Not when he destroyed the conference I guess.

One thing I disagree with on these selections: Carmen Messina should not have been on the 2nd team. He should have been on the first. Yeah, I know, he played for a really bad New Mexico team. Still, he was the first guy to record back-to-back seasons of 100+ tackles for the Lobos since some guy named Urlacher. He's a really good player and should have been given more recognition for it.

But having said that, I suppose you can make an argument for a lot of guys.
