Utah Utes football: Team had lots of luck on their side

    Question: If the Utes had the BYU field goal block formation figured out before the game, why did they wait until the end to go for the block? Why did they not go for a block on the first attempt? It would seem to most that you do not want the other team to score first (that is a momentum builder). Or why did they not go for the block on the second FG. This would have destroyed the confidence of the kicker.

    You cannot say that they were waiting for the end/last pay because you would have to know the outcome of the game or know what was going to happen later on in the game. If a team can destroy a teams confidence you do it. That is why I believe that the Ute's did not know anything prior about the FG weakness. It is just a coaching staff trying to make themselves look better when they know that they did not do well.

    Max Hall was right, I had never been to a BYU Utah game at Utah before untill Saturday. I had heard all about it, but never expected it to be that bad. I can't believe how classless the fans are and the program in general. For coaches to let their team and proabably initiate their team going to the BYU sideline before the game to pick fights is ridiculous. To win a game with class is not enough for them, to celebrate a hard fought win with your own team and fans is out of the question. Max was and is definitely right.

    Good defensive game. This is what happens BYU coaches when we play not to loose instead of playing to win. Yes Utah got very lucky but we had four dropped passes that should have been caught and all at important moments. Then at the end we let it all ride on the foot of a PK who has been extremely inconsistent. We played extemeley conservative against a team THAT RELIES ON THE BIG PLAY AND MOMENTUM rather than more talent. Because of dropped passed and conservative play we couldn't capitalize on turnovers our D came up with. You never play not to loose you have to play to win. however with our stuggles this year I was happy with the D and Heaps. WR's, TE's, and TB's CATCH THE BALL!!!!! Utes, although luck does favor the prepared, you don't prepare for a shank punt that hits the other team. You don't prepare for the Inability for the MTN. camera crew to not have defenative evidence of Bradley's knee being down! BYU we lost because of missed catches and conservative play calling.

    Yes, the Ute players really showed some class after the game bouncing around Payne and other Y players. The Utes got lucky, nothing more. It was a good play to block the field goal at the end. The Y's fault for not bumping him.

    @Monsieur le prof

    Have you looked at the final stats? Sure didn't look like byu "dominated" Utah.

    It really is quite entertaining to read all the crying cougar fans share their thoughts on this one.

    The only thing that really matters is

    Utah 17
    BYU 16

    GO UTES!

    I love hearing bitter zoobies try to make themselves feel better. It happens every single time Utah beats the Y. It's always a bad call or a missed call or a Utah player's cheating that leads to a Utah win. Never mind that Utah capitalized on byu's mistakes, and what about Burton's incredible block? All overshadowed by the belief that a ref missed a call.

    Funny, I don't remember hearing any Y fans whine when a similar situation led to a cougar victory over SDSU! Shoot, if it wasn't for that, the cougs wouldn't even be bowl eligible!

    It comes down to this. You win some, you lose some. Suck it up and be grateful that you even get to play in the post season. Byu has had more than it's fair share than favorable calls and last minute wins due to miracle plays.

    Lick your wounds and look forward to next september. Or basketball. Whagever makes you feel better.

    All things said, GO UTES!!! I'm glad they showed some resolve and never gave up to pull out a win.

    Wow, your posts raise questions...

    You're speaking on behalf of all Utah fans? You were all boo-ing KWhitt? Do you all want him fired, or to resign? After watching Cain play, do you maybe realize coaches are sometimes smarter than fans?

    ///

    Back to reality.

    Lack of class...

    You boo-ed Wynn.

    Regarding Mitch Payne, "Immediately dejected, the pain was deepened quickly as he was swarmed by hundreds of jubilant Utah fans, and even a couple of confrontational Utah players." Ute coaches were trying to protect him from Utah players (you are really calling your players "thugs"?...

    Are you one of the fans who had his feeling "hurt" by "mean Max Hall" while YOU call YOUR players thugs?

    And you rushed the field after beating a 6 win team.

    Tell me you would have rushed the court after beating Oral Roberts in a close basketball game (of course we'll never know, because Oral Roberts beat Boylen's kids at the HC).

    Strickly because BYU is the only game Ute Nation cares about.
    ///
    Thugs?

    Boo-ing KWhitt?

    Maybe you should worry more about what kind of "fan" YOU are, rather than what kind of fan I am.

    One more thing Ute Chute

    We rushed the field because of the way we won the game. We didn't do it because we just beat a 6-6 team the fans though we had lost that game when BYU made it to the thirty then Brandon comes Blocking and we win.

    Also we were not as a fanbase so much booing Wynn but we are mad that he has struggled these last few games and wasn't pulled at Notre Dame so mostly we were booing Whit. I still love both of them and Wynn and Whit are the men for the job, but if you didn't notice Wynn started playing better after he was benched for a few minutes.

    Last thing
    2 out of 3 and Burton is still unblocked

    Ute Chute your one of the fans that doens't realize that BYU has the same fans as the Utes do. Now I will say this Utah players are a little more gung ho than the BYU players because we do have some thugs on our team. But I love everyone of them.

    Finally
    Burton is still coming

    Just another classic game!!! The most lasting impression, for me, was after the game. No comments from the victorious players about 1) the other team did not deserve to win 2) by living right on and off the field good things happen 3) Maqic happens 4) the other school is "classless", and I hate everything about the other school. No, not this time. This time the winners showed class!!
    ////

    I guess you missed the Ute coach repeatedly having to push the Ute player away /holding him back from Mitch Payne.

    Players going after the kicker that just had his kick blocked is "class"?

    Booing Wynn at RES (again) is class?

    Gee, Utah won the game. Coming here and talking about a lack of class... is class?

    Come on... Stop talking class until Utah fans know what it is.

    Take the win, put it in your pocket, and enjoy life.

    ////

    This goes to prove what I have said for 50 years. There is only one game a year Utah cares about.

    Storming the field after beating a 6 win team? Need more proof?

    Where? Because I missed that part. And, if luck being part of sports is "analysis", any third grader could provide that analysis.

    I have no problem with this story. Luck... It's the nature of the game, and Utah got the bounces, and the "W".

    And the blocked kick was not luck, but a hard earned block that took effort from a talented athelete.

    It's that previous, whiney, "what if" story, from the same "journalist".

    Listen, if the guy wants to write a "blog", or be an "editorialist", send out a resume and go do it.

    Personally I expect more from sports "reporters".

    great effort in the fourth quarter Utes. As a Ute fan, I will admit that BYU looked like the better team for 3 quarters. But they came up big when it mattered the most. Heck of game. I'm proud of these young guys. I thought Heaps was the best quarterback on the field. He's going to be very good next year and the next and the next. Looking forward to next season. Wynn needs to get his confidence back. Hopefully the time off will clear his head. GO UTES!!!

    It's feels real good to be on the other side of a close Utah-BYU game! I thought it was impossible for the Utes to beat BYU by one point after seeing three games where the Utes took a one point lead late only to lose it at the end (1998, 2000, and 2007). Yesterday when BYU drove the ball down late I thought 'here we go again,' only to have Brandon Burton save the day!

    Great finish by the Utes! If luck was involved so be it. It's like a saying I have heard before "it's better to be lucky than good."

    Congrats to the Ute Nation on a classic last play victory. BYU has certainly had their share of heroic last-second wins, but thats what makes this rivalry so incredible. Unless the wins are shared, there is no rivalry. So while the loss is tough for Cougar faithful, it helps grow the event, and makes it one of the best in the nation.

    Throughout all of it, I try to remember this maxim..."We win like men, and we lose like men."

    1) "Luck" in sports:
    Good teams usually have a way to take advantages of their "luck"--the so-called lucky bounce.
    Not-so-good teams usually seem to have the ball "bounce" against their direction.

    2) "Luck" had nothing to do with the extreme effort by Devonte to leap up and caught the TD pass.

    3) "Luck" had nothing to do with the block by Brandon Burton. Utah coaches watches BYU games and spotted the weakness. They prepared/practiced Utes for it. They called it and moved Burton to the left side. Burton made a dashing run and blocked it. No luck there, is it?

    4) Brandon Burton dashed in un-touched to block the FG. Was it "unluck" by BYU team not to guard Burton? Or was it BYU coaches' call to concentrate in the middle and left the corners unguarded?

    5) "Luck" had nothing to do with the Utah's stop of BYU's gamble on 4th-and-1 pass earlier in the 4th Q.

    Finally, luck has had nothing to do with Utah's 11 wins of last 18 games vs BYU. McBride, Urban, and Kyle have had everything to do with those 17 wins.

    Here's what I'm most happy about. Ute fans will no longer be forced to listen Blaine Fowler and Todd "Homer" Christensen do Utah games on television any longer.

    The game may as well have been telecast on BYU's station. When the fumble was not reversed, Blaine Fowler let out a loud and anguished NO!, that can't be. Made me laugh. (I guess he didn't see the San Diego State game.)

    The only thing missing to make this a complete byu homer job was not having Paul James as the guest commentator.

  • da bob Salt Lake City, UT
    Nov. 28, 2010 2:40 a.m.

    Ute fans think their not lucky... first fumble surrounded by Y players slides of bounds. tipped ball into the end-zone, tipped interception, and unbelievable punt bounce. Those plays could be played 50 times over and it wouldn't have happened.

    These plays aren't 15 yard penalties or a six yard catch "Utes Fan", these are turnovers.

    U fans should just be happy that you were lucky and had a home-cooking booth, and stop trying to depute it. You sound foolish!

    It was an awesome game, everything a rivalry should be. BYU was the better team on the field today, but Utah pulled out the W.

    I've watched the replay a dozen times from my DVR, the play call was blown! He had security of the ball on his knees, it is evident when the U player starts to rip it out, the ball doesn't slide out loosely, it pops out after the rip. I think the quest will always continue, because that is what quality teams do.

    Congrats on your teams victory.

    I hope your fanbase does learn to class things up.

    Booing Wynn, having a coach restrain a player going after the field goal kicker...

    It just shows that winning the game does not give you instant class.

    Rushing the field after beating a 6-6 team... Makes one wonder if the Utes have ever been there before.

    Please, you are a state run university, paid for with my tax dollars... represent the state well in the PAC.

    And, no parades this year.

    I think we saw the tide turn back this year.

    I thought BYU was lucky when the horse-collar tackle was not hit with a 15-yard penalty. I thought BYU was lucky when Utah's Blechen was hit with a 15-yard penalty for a helmet hit when he was leading with his hands, which the rules allow. I thought BYU was lucky when the BYU receiver was still bobbling the ball out of bounds. The announcers thought all these were the wrong call and they all went against Utah.

    Oh yeah. The fumble that went against BYU. Well, I guess given the above we are even.

    The blocked field goal was NOT luck - Utah's preparation played into that, having staked out a weakness in BYU's kick-blocking left side. Add to it the Ute player's 4.3 40 speed and it was all preparation and skill.

    Luck balances out and so do officials' calls, like I just demonstrated. I just think Cougar fans are used to winning the close games and are having a bit difficulty dealing with it. I can't blame them - I hated last year's overtime loss, and Collie's 4th and 18.

    I agree. Luck and a bad call on a non-fumble by BYU allowed the Utes back into the game. But it was the poor play-calling by Anae in the last minute that doomed the Cougars. They were moving down the field with great efficiency and probably could have scored a TD. Settling for time-killing plays and a long field goal was hopeful/stupid thinking.
    The Cougs dominated and have nothing to be ashamed of. In spite of all the media posturing, the game was very classy and a lot of sportsmanship was shown.

    And technically speaking, "luck" is neutral. If you believe in that kind of thing, the Cougars had luck too. Just not the good kind.
