Credit to Dallas for a hard fought (aggregate) victory. 3 somewhat sloppy goals is an unfortunate way to go out, but RSL has been a little off the mark for the past month or so. I think the Champions League fatigue was really apparent in this time period. Great season, terrific memories. Somewhat scared of the expansion draft....
While I do not want to make excuses, I think this year is showing that something needs to be changed with the Playoffs. In my opinion, there is no advantage to being the higher seed in the playoffs. Solutions:
1. Implement away goals, which would put the pressure on the home team in the first game, and force them to not bunker down in the second leg
2. Let the higher seed chose whether they want to start or finish at home.
3. Go like the NFL, and get rid of the two game series. Higher seed hosts 1 game series.
Overall, it was a good year, and I am proud to be a fan of RSL.
Vince, in regards to expansion draft, it is time for the MLS to get rid of it. What does Portland or Vancouver need to expand on? Both will start next year with DP's, both have successful core players, and they are getting a lot of commitments from other teams. I could understand cases like Phily, where you have no core, but when these teams come from the second division, there should be no draft.
Bummer! Great season though and the run through the champions league has been epic.
Real Real shame. RSL gamely defended theyr'e title all season. It has been a great 2 years and I congratulate Jason Kreis and his coaches and players.
Hope we can pick up with Champions League.
Having said this, as it appears the Galaxy will waltz to the title with a weak field left, some changes are needed.
For me another striker, and more help in the back 4 to get quicker bit more mobile with some better pace to also get more involved with the attack..
311 - among other things that need to be changed about the playoffs is that the 2nd and 3rd place teams should not have to play each other 1st round in the playoffs. The league already plays a balanced schedule so there is no reason not to go to a single table for playoff seeding. It was a good season, hopefully this team keeps up the training and comes into the their Champions League matches in February hungry for a trophy.
Very proud of the team. It was a great season.
I completely agree with three11stu. The first round has no homefield advantage to it. 1 game hosted for the higher seed makes a lot more sense. We really had a bad first half and in the 2nd just got extremely unlucky. You win some you lose some I guess. Hopefully we protect paulo jr because he is young and could be the future of this team. I think we also need to protect Sabo even though he was nonexistent throughout the end of the season and playoffs. Midfield morales, beckerman, williams and werner protected and wingert, borchers, olave for defense and obviously Rimando. That's ten if I can count I can think of many more players we should protect.
IRSLFAN:
I agree on your protected group completely. However, is Andy going to retire anyone?
Agree with everyone on the crazy playoff format. First round should be 1 game. Next rounds should be home and home. Last year the stupid format helped us. This year it really hurt us. Either that or all games 1 single game at higher seeded teams stadium.
Great season RSL. Is Sabo leaving? I think his loan deal ends doesn't it.
Really bummed we couldn't finish. Incredible saves by Hart. I love the way RSL plays though. I agree that we played a little fatigued the last month. Not having Javi was a significant blow to our attack. But what a turn around from seasons past. RSL can hold their heads high as they are highly respected throughout the league. As further proof RSL has made it, haters don't post anymore. Gotta love it.
