Behind the Mic: Uncertainty in BYU's bowl outlook

    @eagle 6:29

You asked - "So is going to the New Mexico Bowl to play Fresno State a good thing?"

As a Cougar fan, I appreciate this question, because it's a fair one.

Personally, I think any bowl game for BYU this year is definitely a good thing, especially as they move out of the Mountain West Conference.

Mr Wrubell -- BYU STARTED the year as a rebuild year: freshmen in all skill positions and a depleted Defense. Where were everyone's expectations in September?? I personally don't want BYU in a bowl (futile to talk about anyway at this point).

As for Utah, I can't wait for them to play real teams week after week in the PAC. They will never be in the Rose Bowl. It is interesting to note how few comments they make on their own team's articles in this paper, and how even fewer call in to their radio stations after a big game. 45k seat stadium for a "national powerhouse"??

RE firing Bronco - who would BYU get that would be any better? Realistically.

    "...their nationwide fan base notwithstanding."

It seems Greg continues the Cougar tradition of perpetuating the myth of a national fan base.

    A couple of facts:

In the 38 states east of Colorado there are about 1.6 million Mormons. A generous guess would be that 50% of those Mormons are BYU fans.

Those 800,000 BYU fans are dispersed among 38 states, for an average of about 21,000 fans per state.

The bottom line is that BYU may have a broadly dispersed fan base, but it is certainly not a meaningful national fan base by any measure.

But the facts won't stop Cougars from perpetuating the myth.

So basically, SDSU caught a break when the officials on the field missed the facemask that caused the fumble and now they're whining about not being able to capitalize on the break because the replay officials missed a call on the fumble.

The officials totally blew it, but ultimately got the call right.

    Poetic justice.

As painful as this year has been, a real fan sticks with his team. Bitter Yoot trolls will remain trolls regardless of whether BYU rebounds over the next few years or not. The Utah fan base is the ultimate bandwagon crowd. You all think you're Alabama or something. I can't wait to watch the lemmings leap after the next sub-.500 season. You don't think it'll ever happen? Man, will I laugh and laugh.

As for this year's Y vs. U matchup, all I can say is y'all better win, and win big. The pressure's off the Y, as it's assumed they will go down. They probably will, but if they don't . . man, will I laugh and laugh. What would the trolls possibly say?

I would love to see us win out but let's get real, unless the offense comes to play that is not likely. Beating Utah, could happen, we have seen underdogs win all year (USU), but not likely either.

Bowl games are fun and I hope we get one but even if we do, BYU has always used these as a reward for the team and family members. So it doesn't matter much which one we go to. However, don't forget who will be pulling for us to get as good a game as possible--ESPN. They call most of the shots and would love to have us in a decent game if for no other reason than the following year when they have to broadcast those 4 games or more.

BYU always means ratings for ESPN and that's the way it is!! Go Cougars finish strong and have fun doing it and maybe the Utes will be humbled.

  • eagle Provo, UT
    Nov. 2, 2010 11:56 p.m.

Bottom line though about the schedule is BYU has beat one team with a winning record and lost to all the other teams they have played with a winning record. They lost to a team that has won two games.

Utah has actually beat both teams it has played with a winning record and everyone else--good, bad or ugly.

Besides TCU (which remains to be seen), Utah beats everyone on BYU's schedule.

Seven of the teams on each's schedule will be common opponents. They will play each on the last game of the season. It will be decided by then. Then Utah fans can say they have won two of the last three or something insipid like that.

If TCU does beat the U to me that doesn't change the fact that Utah is a good team. Losing to TCU isn't the most awful thing in the world. TCU is the favorite, they are the ones ranked #4. But certainly the Utes can validate themselves with a big victory. Wins over TCU, SDSU, ND and BYU, four teams that may all be .500 or better may lead to BCS championship game.

    Unbiased. Good job.

That means Utah has played teams that have a combined record of 16 - 47.

Would they really deserve a bowl game?

The following teams on BYU schedule have 2 or less wins:
    New Mexico
Utah State (and byu got killed in this game)

    3 Wins
Colorado State (but 2 of those victories are over UNLV and New Mexico)

BYU did beat SDSU, but come on BYU got killed by USU.

Several other teams will end up with 6 wins, but they'll have played a lot tougher teams.
BYU doesn't deserve to go bowling.

  • Steven S Jarvis Orem, UT

Even in a bad year a BYU article talking about a game against UNLV and possible bowl hopes is going to get more comments and readers on it than an article about the biggest mid-season matchup Utah has ever faced. What does that tell anyone about relevence. BYU is always relevent even when they are bad.

    BYU beat SDSU.
    SDSU beat Airforce.
    Airforce beat Navy.
    Navy beat Notre Dame.
So, if Notre Dame beats Utah,
and Utah wins out, and Oregon and Auburn fall,
BYU will win the National Championship!

I'm thinking I can make some money on this.

Man, I love both bYU and Utah football, but you Utah fans are about the largest group of hypocrites ever ammassed.

You complain for years that BYU fans are arrogant, and then they have a bad year, all the beatdowns they have give you are gone...

Fire Bronco? That would be stupid.

Archie brings up the 84 BYU victory was only by 10, yet the arrogant Utah fans are thinking all they need to do is beat TCU, then take the year off.

I wouldn't put it past BYU to go to a bowl, and a win over Utah would not surprise me.

Personally, I'd choose to see Utah in an NC Championship game, but I think there is a better chance of NavalVet posting without using the word "zoob" than that occurring. Utah just forgot to put together a SOS this year.

So put your Utah dreams on hold, grab a Utah article to read, just win them one at a time, and don't be looking too far past any team.

I haven't see Utah look good against a tough team this year yet.

Utah was 6-4 and playing at home when BYU played them in 1984. The 24-14 win on the road over their archrival was enough to propel BYU to #1 in the polls.

Fortunately for Utah, none of Utah's best teams have had to play in Provo.

    Utah's 21st ranked 2003 team (10-2) barely beat BYU (4-8) 3-0 in Provo.

Utah's best teams, 1994, 2004, 2008, and possibly 2010, all got to play the Cougars in SLC.

Utah doesn't play well against good teams on the road. If this game was being played in Fort Worth, the Utes wouldn't stand a chance.

Every time a utah fan posts on a BYU article it only reinforces little brother syndrome. If BYU is irrelevant as many of you are saying why keep posting? The fact that you took the time out of your day to read a BYU article and then post a comment speaks volumes as to inferiority complex still held by many u fans. Even in a down year BYU still gets more attention by utah fans than there own team. Most u fans on this site really are just Y haters.

Which is why, of course, you not only decided to read an article about BYU's prospects, but to take the time to comment on the article.

The BYU-obsessed haters who pretend to be Utah fans are hillarious.

With the biggest game in RES history less than four days away, the faux Utah fans still can't control their BYU-obsession long enough to pretend to be focused on the Utah-TCU game.

Do you know what the score was in the Utah / BYU game in 1984? Do you?? BYU was ranked #3 and Utah was no where to be found in the rankings. The final score was BYU 24 Utah 14. Not much of a performance from a #3 ranked team.

What AFA did last Saturday was not unexpected. Utah prevailed...that's all they needed to do. Btw...the five takeaways by Utah is very impressive. Reminded me of the 2008 game against BYU.

Ute fans, I competed for four years at BYU, I had alot of respect for most of the Utes I competed against. I still have a lot of respect for them.

Utes4life, Hedgy and Bass whatever, here is my question. READ WELL.

you three are the reason why it is so easy to start to dislike U of U. Yeah their athletes, cussed me out, spit on me, and threw items at my team and I, but you know what I never cared too much, they were young kids and most have apologized after. Maybe they were so mad because we beat them 8-0 in my time, not sure.

I can understand why they continued to pick on us when we obliterated them year in and year out, but now your team is winning, why rub it in the face of your rivals? I distinctly remember traveling to SLC my senior year to cheer on or direct rivals, I guess you three want none of that sportsmanship. Well we will still give it, even if you three dont deserve it

It's amazing how delusional UTAH fans have become. Many of them have been talking national championship since the first game of the season. Remember BYU's "Quest" hypocrites? It's okay to put it in writing on comment boards - just not

Something to keep in mind - You've now played one good team the entire season.

Air Force proved they were the better team but since they gave Utah 5 gifts - Utah was able to squeak by with a very ugly win. It was fun to watch Wittingham wet his pants frequently on the sideline.

You'll never do what BYU did in 84 Utah fans so remember your BCS victories as meaningless as they are since that's as close as you get to a national title.

TCU will kick your butts all over the field on Saturday.

Then the delusional talk will end.

Don't trouble your little heart about BYU's current or future relevance ute4ever.

This is simply a rebuilding year for BYU, a team that has been a perennial Top 25 team for over 30 years.

Every team goes through up and down years.

Last year's #2 team, Texas, is currently 4-4 and also in jeopardy of not qualifying for a bowl. The Longhorns have lost to UCLA, Baylor, and Iowa State at home. Yes, the same Iowa State team that Utah blew out in Ames.

Never have understood how people think bowl games mean anything, but something to do for people over the holidays. While the BCS toots "national championship", remember there is no such thing in the Bowl Championship Division of the NCAA. Another interesting thing is that in spite of the lowly BYU record and meaningless game with UNLV more state of Utah fans will watch it and be concerned about it, than all of the media hyped drama taking place at RES this weekend.

Now, Utah is garnering all of the national media due to the play on the field, PAC12 acceptance, MWC player of the week awards, etc.

The only bowl I've seen the Cougars take lightly was 2008, when BYU seemed disinterested throughout the game in losing to an Arizona team that was very excited to be playing in their first bowl in about 10 years.

I don't know if anyone can comment on this, but I believe there is a new rule that teams with 7 or more wins are supposed to be considered before 6 win teams. That might make it a little more difficult for BYU to be chosen over Air Force who are likely to finish with a record of 9 and 3.

BYU should beat New Mexico and UNLV. THe trap game in my opinion is Colorado State. Out of the next 3 that one is the toughest. They should win though. A bowl game would be grat for this team even if they ended up playin the 5th pac 10 team this year. My prediction when looking at the schedule to start the season was a 6-6 season. Colorado St on the Road will pose the biggest problem but nothing can be taken for granted. This team has shown that they are capable of losing to any team. The Utah St game looms large now looking back on the season. After the last four years it is a bitter pill, never thought we would need to worry about UNLV, Colorado St and New Mexico. A bowl game would be a good finish to what has been a very disappointing season. It is good to see the defense back in Broncos control and planning better, now if the offense and Heaps would show any type of improvement it would be a plus.

"Then again, the beggars/choosers relationship is well-established, and BYU is currently a postseason panhandler."

Good stuff from Wrubell. We'll find out soon if this years edition of Cougar football has it in them to go to a bowl game. I'm curious to see if there's any O improvement after the bye week.

Xpat, im sorry but you and the rest of Cougar nation need to realize that:

the cougs are carried away. Pathetic outing on the season to date..
Most other schools would consider giving Bronco the 86..I think you should too...
Bowling for BYU is a pipe dream. The TDS has not played in a bowl game that meant anything since the 1996 Cotton Bowl Triumph over K-State. (14 years, 0 BCS games)

Cougar fans should be focused on the womens soccer team. Best program on campus.(By Far!!!) Legit NCAA tournament team.

Insignificant... in comparison to the Ute game, that's an honest statement.

I'll be watching both games. I hope that the Cougars can continue to improve over these next games and that all cylinders will be firing by the time the Utah / BYU meet at the end of the month.

    Go Cougars!

    0% chance tds goes bowling.

They'll drop one of the next 3 before losing by 30 in the beatdown provided courtesty big brother.

    National Champ for Utah
    No Bowl for byu.

    Tough choice for future recruits

What if! BYU wins it's next 4 games finishes 7-5 and tied for second in the MWC with a win over it's tie mate, Utah, provided the Utes lose to TCU. HMMMM, stranger things have happened!

One game at a time. This BYU team isn't good enough to look past anybody. Just focus on winning this Saturday and potential bowls will take care of themselves.
