Ah, Ute b-ball fans...always living in the past!?!

Based on the rankings it looks like the U will have a much better chance to compete next year in the PAC than they do this year...but on second thought, that's not really true is it!

@hedgehog, I know the Cougars are not good this year, but don't be so sure of yourself. The two still have to meet later on in the year and miracles can and do happen, so you never know. Again, don't be so sure...the nightmare just maybe yours, on Yewt Street rather than Kewgar Street, wherever the heck they are!

Funny ... I don't remember the Utes even being mentioned in this article and yet so many Utah fans are here TRYING to make it about them. I can't decide if that is narcissism or insecurity.

Good to see the Cougars get some national respect. I know its only preseason rankings, but BYU has a chance to be very good this season and hopefully make a run in the NCAA tournament.

    Go Cougars!

Re Anonymous Infinity: What's your problem? Why are you so negative?
Are you the expert that has reviewed all the college teams and know more than the AP voters?
50 teams east of the Mississippi, better than BYU you say, who are they? Back up your comments. Do you know anything about this BYU team? By your comments, I'd say you don't.

I wish that BYU and Utah did not play each other in any sports. I am so sick and tired of all the hate that flows back and forth between all the fans. You would think that some people could be a little more respectful to each other. Such a sad state....

"byu fans only think about utah the week we play them....other than that we dont care"

    Proborunner,

Utah is like Freddy Krueger to the zoob. We haunt your dreams.

The "nightmare on Kewgar Street" is knowing the Utes have stepped over you to be INVITED to join the "Conference of Champions" while the kewgs have downgraded to the high school gyms of the WWC.

the difference between byu fans and utah fans is this.....

utah fans are obsessed with byu and constantly think about them and can't get byu out of their minds

byu fans only think about utah the week we play them....other than that we dont care

Everything that hedgie types is meaningless drivel.

The funny thing about jealous Utah trolls talking smack about basketball is that the only thing the Utes have to beat their chests about is ancient history; the same tired arguement that they're constantly whining about BYU fans in football.

No matter where BYU finishes the season, they will beat Colorado St twice again unlike the u. We won't even go to the SW Baptist, Seattle and Idaho games of the last two years. It must be hard for the once proud program that Majerus took to unprecedented heights to fall so far so fast. Looking forward to another 71-51 game at the Huntsman center :) Enjoy your 6th or 7th place finish in the conference this year.

    @Eating Skiddles in the Dark

If your research went back one more year you would know that in 2005 Utah was a sweet 16 team. Now please remind us all when BYU accomplished that.

Yes I agree Utah basketball is down but reality is even in our bad years we don't go 1-25 (BYU 1998-99 season??) and even in your great years you can't get passed the 2nd round: 1-5 under the current coach.

So congrats on finally winning a tournament game in 17 years.

Will BYU get to the Sweet 16? Maybe but not likly.

    NC-title in 2009

    Riddles

I actually agree with you that the Utes were a bit over rated that year they lost in the tournament. It happens when you have national respect for so many years. But to say that BYU did anything out of the ordinary by barely beating a Florida team that really should not have been there, is kinda funny.

You might want to work on your "weak" basketball smack too. You can't really talk it though when you can't back it up.

Do something in the tournament beyond the first round and then we can talk.

  • UtahBlueDevil Durham, NC

I actually hate the ranking. I would much rather have a team like we did last year and over achieve and win the national title than be ranked number 1 and have anything short of winning the NT again be a let down.

Just as last years team was under ranked all year, this is surely giving the guys in the right color blue way to much credit.

We shall see. The nice thing is who ever ends the season number 1 will be because they earned it, and didn't rely on some votes to get there.

This should give Cougar fans something positve to talk about regardiing their athletic department.

Football team on a bye, and an article about basketball, the best of both worlds for Cougar fans.

You're right. Florida won back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008, but North Carolina won the title in 2009.

Hedghog. I'm surprised you had the backbone to comment. Where are the Ute's ranked? 6th. Not bad. Too bad thats the MWC poll. Of course to the Ute's benefit,it could have been 3rd in the PAC 10 this year.

I see the bitter, Utah trolls are coming out of the woodwork. They would be smart to stay on the football blogs and not embarrass themselves with their weak basketball smack.

Fans of a team whose only NCAA appearance in the last 5 years ended in an embarrassing #5 seed blowout to a #12 seed, should be talking smack to fans of a team whose last NCAA appearance included a gutsy OT win over the defending National Champions.

Frankly, I couldn't care less about the opinions of trolls whose team forgot how to play basketball after sweaterman left.

Actually, hedgy, it's just about right for a future WCC member.

    #12 Gonzaga (WCC)
    #24 BYU (future WCC)

On the other hand, that future PAC member on the hill will be hopelessly out of its league with only one ranked team in its conference.

    #18 Washington (PAC)
    Utah (future PAC)

Will the Utes even crack the top 200 this year?

  • Anonymous Infinity American Fork, UT

BYU basketball is no better relatively speaking than the football team is this year. Preseason ranking of #24. That is ludicrous. There are probably more than 50 teams east of the Mississippi that should be ranked ahead of the Cougars. Give me a break.

  • Madden Herriman, UT
    Oct. 28, 2010 12:00 p.m.

Articles like this remind me why the independence and WCC route will be painful. As much as the MWC football contracts (and teams, once Utah goes) leave a lot to be desired, the basketball was always good and competitive.

On the flip side, being in the WCC will make tourney time that much bigger. BYU needs to make a leap there, getting into the 16 on a regular basis. Not easy, but possible.

Before LaVell, BYU football was simply something to bide time until basketball season started. The basketball team this year will help to soothe the sting of a rebuilding year for football, but both programs are on solid ground with excellent coaches and plenty of talent.

BYU football still has a chance to finish out the year strong and finish with a not great, but decent season.

BYU basketball, though, has a chance to have its best season since Ainge led the Cougars to the Elite Eight. This team could equal or exceed that feat, but they're going to have to gel quickly as a team with several new/returning players coming in to replace some great players from last season.

Oh good, this will take some of the emphasis off of the football team.
