i've been stating on this site for over a year now that C.J. needs to pull up for a 10 foot jump shot instead of driving all the way to the basket amoung trees (much taller & heavier players).Alot of times when he's set-up for a three on the wing, a man rushes him so hard--the defender over commmits.C.J. easily drives past him & drives to the lane..C.J. needs to pull up for an easy 10 foot jumper instead of risking injury. C.J. goes to the rim taking off too far from the basket which leaves himself open to serious injury (off balance position). This happened to C.J. in the playoffs last year & the Lakers decked him under the basket & C.J. was very lucky to escape a major injury. The Lakers weren't even called for a foul if I remember correctly.Either C.J. has to dunk closer to the rim & set both his feet & get control of his body or start learning to nail that wide open 10 footer in the lane or wind up on Utah's injured list more often !

I have to disagree with you Rick. Players should always try and take it to the rack. Taking it to the rim is a much higher percentage shot and makes the defense foul or work. This is not Church ball this is the NBA. Sloan would bench CJ if his only game was to put up jump shots all game long. Can a player get injured going to the rim? Of course, thats part of the game. Thats why they make the big bucks!

Re Jazz-Nation & Rick : I think your both right, I do think a player with CJ's size and athleticism should be able to take the ball all the way to the hole and finish and CJ has been doing that lately but I also believe a player should have as part of his game the ability to stop short of the bigs and take an uncontested 10 to 12 footer.
This particular injury didn't even look like he stepped on someones foot, it looked like his ankle just rolled. It was pretty much a fast break, driving layup and CJ should have been taking it all the way to the rim.
Hopefully CJ recovers quickly and isn't reluctant to drive in the future.
One thing I have had a problem with for years is players (nba quality) not having the in between game.
For years I have complained about kids coming into the NBA and they either shoot the 3 or take it all the way to the basket. They don't show the ability to take the open 12 to 15 footer. They need to be able to do both.

well said Captain L..C.J does NOT get the calls when he takes it all the way to the rim because this is the NBA...If it were kobe, a foul would be called all the time..Same thing happened when Jordan played & in the Finals vrs. Utah,( the second time) the refs calling fouls was egregious--one sided all the way in favor of the Bulls..C.J. will not get the calls & he is risking serious injury by not first planting both feet & going straight up to the rim.. The lane is free & clear for an easy 10 footer !!! Mark my words, somebody is going to deck C.J. & he will not even be able to attend Mass (church) for a few weeks !!!

Stop making my laugh so hard. So an NBA player shouldn't take the ball to the basket? Call Jerry and tell him that one!! Geez I am glad you guys don't coach at any level.

IN Pee Wee basketball you take the ball hard to the basket. In Rec ball you take the ball hard to the basket.....Should I go on?

Craziest posts I have ever read in my life.......

basically rick doesn't understand or know what he is talking about. cuz that was a fastbreak. and there was one, maybe two guys down there. why would anyone ever pull up for the fifteen footer when there is a lane to drive down. thats exactly what the defense wants, is for a guy to pull up for the fifteen footer. wow.

A 10-15 foot jump shot is the worst shot you can take in basketball. Statistically, most players have the same chance to make a 10-15 foot shot as they have to make a 3 pointer (depending on their range - some people just can't hit from 25 ft out), but you only get 2 points for it.

You have to be able to make that shot in case it's the only thing available, but it should pretty much be a last resort. You should only take it if the shot clock is winding down, or if you don't think you can get anything else uncontested.

A 30-40% 2 pt FG is not a good shot.

Re snakenamedjoe: I don't know where you are coming from when you say that the 10 to 15 ft jumper is the worst shot in basketball. That's ludicrus. Why does Sloan and everyother coach run plays to get players open 15 ft jumpers (ala Harpring's play), guards, especially pts are tought to stop and pop the 15 ft jumper on the fast break if the D doesn't come out to stop them (falls back into the passing lanes). The midrange jumper is an invaluable tool in the game of basketball and is way under used. That is the point I am making, too many young players in todays game don't have that as part of their arsenal. The midrange game is almost a thing of the past. If you listen to most coaches, they will tell you the same thing. The young players either take the 3 or take it all the way to the rim and take an off balance, forced, contested shot or they run over the defensive man and get called for a charge. The mid range jumper is a high percentage shot and should be used more. There is aplace forboth.
