It's great that we're working to help small businesses, but does the government really need to be involved in the effort?
In contradiction with the idea of maintaining a level playing field, most government involvement makes the field unlevel.
@JPH: Quite right.
It reminds me of Ronald Reagan's comment: "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'"
I do enjoy this contradiction, however. While government vilifies business at every turn, condemning businessmen as greedy, condemning their motive: money, dictating how they produce, how they hire, how they fire, how they pay, and how much of their profits they will be allowed to keep, they come riding in on their white horse to help those who struggle under such conditions.
I pass along Ayn Rand's advice to all Utah businessmen:
"Run for your life from any man who tells you that money is evil. That sentence is the leper's bell of an approaching looter."
Methinks I hear ringing.
Can't figure it our yet. Other than put more money in the state coffers and tax relief, how does it help business in any way? Pay a months mortgage on their business or car payment? The state has a new shortfall now so it will help with that.
Temporary money are only band-aids that don't help the economy or business at all. Of course we all know that but it makes a good propaganda story for the news media.
