Did I miss something? Is the $50M shortfall in
education funding or the overall state budget?
If it is education funding I can sort of see the state keeping half of the the $101M. If it is the state budget I am curious by what strategum or rational the legislature can dirvert those funds away from education? Could someone more knowledgable
help me out?

Steven S Jarvis

Any shortfall is assigned to education, any surplus to roads and business development when dealing with a Republican legislature. It could have been much worse. Back in April we were lagging behind by 100 million. Education is a low priority for the party, so this should not come as a surprise.

SEND IT BACK......Its pat of Obama's evil plot to entirely control the economy.....everything should be privatized....blah blah blah....come on tea partiers start your ranting.

The actual short fall is according to an article published on September 8. The taxes fell fifty million dollars short of projections.

This appears to be from the overall state budget based on this article. So the question is why the legislature and the governor taking 50 million dollars from this stimulus funds?

There are also restrictions on how the money can be used. It will be interesting to see how much education gets. We should be able to see the “republican’s commitment to education” based on how these funds are allocated.

The legitimate question is whether the state should accept the money or not. I can see the principled argument though supposedly it is not coming directly from tax money but savings from other sources (but I know...).

But if the state accepts the money, it should all go to education. That's where it is earmarked. The state using that for any other reasons after accepting it would also bring forth some problems regarding the appropriate principled response.

In the end I say take the money, every other state is going to take their share, and help some teachers out. I don't think that would be the worst thing in the world.

Let's not forget that every dollar the feds "give away", is borrowed money. In actuality it's fiat money because it isn't backed by anything. And you can bet that for every dollar Obama so freely gives away, he'll want something in return for it - it's sort of a bondage!

Christy

"republican's commitment to education".... AHHHAHAHAHA!

Utah Teacher

Provo district should be giving it straight to their teachers.

No added days, no added hours for Kindergarten.

They have really stuck it to the teachers the last 6-7 years.

Morale is very low and this is a chance to actually do something about it.

Just give every teacher a percentage of the money.

If it is one time, fine.

At least you did something right by your teachers this one time.

Seriously.

This is what should be done by every district in the state.

A one time raise for all teachers.

Utah Teacher:

I went on-line to see that Our P.E, Health,Football coach at our high school makes 75K per year. Not bad for teaching 5 hours per day and 9 months a year. I think your right he deserves a raise. He also takes a cut on the mandatory weight lifting and summer program. He takes a cut on the youth football camp and our annual week long camp off campus.

I noticed our Principal made 130K and our vice Principal 105K.

I get it new teachers make squat, but raises are not based on merit, rather based on the teachers education and years of service. Most of the teachers with a Masters and 15+ years makes a salary including benefits of well over 100K for 9 months work. Wake up people this information is all on-line for government workers.

Should not have applied for the funds Gov.

@Keith43: Yeah, he'll want something like the kids getting an actual education.

Christy

@Keith43 --

Are you as cynical about your taxes going to pay for a 100% unprovoked war?

How about tax slashes for the top 2% income makers in our country?

Is it just money going to teachers that gets your goat?

"And you can bet that for every dollar Obama so freely gives away, he'll want something in return for it - it's sort of a bondage!"

We have a sentence beginning with the conjunction and.

"In grammar, a conjunction (abbreviated or ) is a part of speech that connects two words, phrases or clauses together. This definition may overlap with that of other parts of speech, so what constitutes a "conjunction" should be defined for each language. .."

You want us to believe Obama wants something from a state whose citizen get $1.23 dollars for each dollar they pay in federal taxes? Most Utahns detest the government that built Glen Canyon, ine View, makes they payroll at Hill AFB, whose contracts employ Utahns and is cleaning up the waste at the Atlas mine. This is the evil federal government that gave Utah 3.2 billion dollars for the 2002 Winter Games.

What has the government gotten back: contempt?

You believe this money that will improve education in Utah will help Obama?

Will it change your vote?

Some of you people are nuts. Do you really think partisan politics is more important than our children's education? Get your priorities in order.

The key to these funds is "a one time fund", not intended to save jobs or give teachers a raise.

Utah will have to at some point stop accepting these funds so our economy can stabilize and become realistic. Federal government surely does not have these fake funds and that's how they should be treated.

The other thing to remember is that Utah like many other states do not have specialized tax collection departments. In other words, there is only one tax department where all tax funds and spending are allotted from. All federal donations and state bonding funds go to one single fund, the state tax commission. The state tax commission tells the legislators how much money they have in hand and how much in projected funds for the next 20 years or so. Spending is 20 years ahead of collections.

Property taxes go to the county then to the state lottery fund that legislators combine for the state budgets and spending, This sets up the prepaid tax spending and why the state never has enough money. Prepaid spending is deadly to the state tax funds, especially in a recession.

We don't have the money to pay for these incessant giveaway programs that mainly go to fund Obama's union membership jobs.

Worse, the money comes with strings attached which doom us to imprudent spending from state funds int he future.

Some people only see the free cheese, not the mousetrap that it is in.

Stop the spending!

Fire school administrators and stop marginal programs and use the money left to only support the critical core missions of education.

Keith43 said "Let's not forget that every dollar the feds "give away", is borrowed money. In actuality it's fiat money because it isn't backed by anything."

Did you say the same thing about Bush and the GOP's medicare prescription drug benefit?

Did you say the same about the 2001 tax cut?

Did you say the same about the 2003 tax cut?

Did you say the same about the $800 billion (so far, without replacing worn out equipment) for the needless war in Iraq?

Then why are you worried about the Education funding that was deficit neutral? You do know that they closed a tax loophole to give tax credits to companies that ship jobs overseas to provide these funds, right?

Would you rather give tax credits to big companies for reducing jobs in the US or would you rather have teachers stay on the job in Utah?

JNA

Be very very careful that not one cent of this money ends up with the criminal element of the teachers unions and administrators should not get a red cent either.

Gov Herbert is to be commended for seeing the need for education and supporting it.

Let's all thank China for these funds. They are floating the loan. And when repayment time comes, Ego can put up his property first.
