Another immigration-related Deseret News editorial that strains rationality.

"Piecemeal state laws will only complicate matters. A specious argument: we have fifty states and fifty sets of laws. Nothing new. Nothing unmanageable.

"...they will not report crimes to police for fear of deportation." Well, doesn't the fact that they thus put their illegal interests before being good neighbors help prove our point that they should not be here? Prospective immigrants who respect America and its laws should be given preferential treatment.

"The federal government has limited resources but is reportedly deporting record numbers of illegal immigrants. Some 400,000 people could be deported this year, according to a Washington Post report."

So what's the problem then? Why the need for "reform?" It's working, isn't it? And it will work even better, with the passage of the Arizona and Sandstrom and Ray bills and others like them around the country.

CJ

What we need is comprehensive enforcement without guest worker programs and other incentives for breaking the law, that is what we need and nothing else. The DN bias on this issue is so blatant and outrageous it is beyond belief. In the last year I have heard no sympathy whatsoever for the victims of illegal aliens, and they are many, from the DN. Just like Barack Obama, the DN thinks it knows better than the average person what is best for them and the country. If they continue to think they can fly in the face of overwhelming public opinion against their position they will not be around much longer.

This is what has Crashed our Nation, however far worse look at all of the narrow minded who have forgatton what it really means to be an "American",or a "Christian", many are even alligned with White Supremacists, even Nazi's, regarding Immigrants, and thier Families.

As a Latter Day Saint, I am very proud of this article.

I do not understand how anyone with an ounce of "American" blood running trough their veins can stand by and watch "Good" Humans being Persecuted, families being ripped apart, with Parents even being Deported from their "Legal" Citizen Children.

To Repair our Economy and our Country, we must remember the Principles and Values that built our great Nation of Immigrants.

January 2008 = The Start of the E-verify Law, and the I.C.E. Deportation/Incarceration Programs.

January 2008 = The Start of "The Worst Recession in U.S. History."

This is No Co-incidence!

So get the Republicans in the Senate to cease their filibuster of the reform legislation. You are a Republican newspaper. Get you party to stop saying no to everything. Or are we waiting for the election to be over after using immigration as a wedge issue?

RedShirt

But in the long term it is cheaper for the government to send them all back when caught. Each immigrant family costs the government over $2000/year. If you send them back to their nation of origin, that opens up a job for a US citizen AND helps save tax payer money.

Bobo

States are acting because the federal government refuses to enforce immigration laws and protect the border. We need only to enforce existing laws and dramatically reduce legal immigration. The same people screaming about how to accomodate illegals and millions of legals are the same ones who refuse to end the magnets that draw them here.

Emophiliac

Yet another editorial that I don't care about. Why can't the Deseret News and others write editorials about how illegals are affecting US citizens? Why don't you care about us, the people who are presumably buying your paper? Can't you feel sorry for us as well? Or is it only given to people who are breaking our laws?

Every single alien "BROKE THE LAW!" Our Government, has allowed the invasion of 30 million criminals in direct violation of Article IV, Section IV of our Constitution. they force American tax payers to pay Billions to provide Welfare, Prison cells, Educate the invaders children, free medical care, massive document fraud, & are destroying our schools, hospitals, communities, culture while Robbing, Raping, Killing & Assaulting American Citizens WAKE UP PEOPLE! Every Non-representative including obama and holder need to be IMPEACHED! for not upholding the oath of office they swore to defend the Constitution! If these clowns were to do their job, this would all be a Moot point!

The only necessary immigration "reform" is elimination of the political whoring over the "illegal alien vote," accompanied by a return to stringent and consistent application and enforcement of the most liberal, humane, and compassionate immigration system in the civilized world -- those U.S. immigration laws currently in effect.

Political demagogues, pandering to one voter constituency or another, produced the problem. Only elimination of political tactics and dirty tricks that use illegals as political capital will solve it.

Lowonoil

We will get the immigration policy that suits the interests of those who wield real polical power - the wealthy business interests. They want a meek, low paid, exploitable workforce with much of thier costs externalized to the public at large. Oh wait, that's what they have now. That's why things will remain the way they are.

mkSdd3

If the federal government would enforce the laws we wouldn't be having this debate. They are unwilling and to a lesser extent unable to enforce the laws. I can't in good faith turn this over to the feds knowing that they will just continue to ignore the problem.

Any reform must include closing the borders. Any work permit must include no citizenship for children born here while the parents are not citizens. And all quotas for workers must be able to grow and shrink with the economy. If the economy is doing well then the number of work permits goes up. If the economy is in bad shape then the number of work permits go down. Any worker that breaks the law (any felony or DUI) will be sent home. Businesses would have to treat these workers the same as citizens (otherwise it would lower the our wages).

The reforms that are being talked about now have so many loopholes that they would not solve any of the problems.

Dear Daivd Nichols:
I am ashamed and embarassed that you,an LDS person would think that our recession was caused by enforcement of our laws. This recession was caused mostly by corrupt and greedy CEOs, not enforcement of immigration laws!

The Deseret News is concerned about illegal aliens and their families but what about the harm being done to Utah families when illegal aliens use the Social Security numbers of tens of thousands of Utah children in order to get jobs? Source: Workforce Services.

Is the Deseret News' silence on this an indication that it has no problem with the fact that, according to the Social Security Administration, 75 percent of illegal aliens use a fraudulently obtained Social Security number which is a felony?

Is the Deseret News willing to turn a blind-eye to identity theft and perjury on I-9 forms (felonies) so illegal aliens can get jobs?

Will the Deseret News give illegal aliens who have used the Social Security numbers of Utah children and left them with destroyed credit, arrest records, income tax liabilities and corrupted medical records a pass from these felonies? If so, where is the compassion, the mercy and the justice for these children and their families?

The pharisees 2,000 years ago felt the “law” as they understood it was all important. They used the “law” to crucify my Savior. Not every one feels that “the law right or wrong must be enforced.” We can change unworkable and unjust laws to make them work. There is nothing morally wrong about that. We need to accept that when we compare stores and shop at the one with the lowest produce prices we are encouraging people to come here and work. When we choose our hotel according to price we are encouraging them to come.

Littlebit

I hope & pray this is the last installment of the one-note symphony that the Deseret News keeps playing over and over and over. Many of us would like to hear the other side of the story---stories of those whose lives have been turned upside down because an illegal stole their Social Security number, or an illegal driver injured, maimed, or killed someone dear to them. Why is only one side of this issue being discussed and written about??

Fitness Freak

The DN mis-titled the article.

It SHOULD read: Federal Immigration ENFORCEMENT is a must!

There will be NO NEW IMMIGRATION bill unless/until the Feds. secure the border, and at least make a "token" attempt at locating at least some of the trespassers already here.

Then, AND ONLY THEN, will the American public accept any sort of "new" immigration bill!

Logically, how can we tell all those who have waited in line, paid thousands of dollars to get here, learn the language, etc. "oh, too bad for you we've decided that those who snuck in can be citizens but we'll keep your money anyway"!

Also, what about all my friends from the African continent who would like to be here? Is it okay if I bring them over by the boatload, or do they have to sneak across the desert, in order to receive amnesty?

mkSdd3

@Littlebit | 1:42 p.m. Sept. 9, 2010

I agree that I don't want to hear any more of this one note symphony that the DN is putting out. However I don't care to hear the other side either. I would love to hear what policy makers are doing about the problems.

Tell us the details of the Sandstrom bill that is being worked on, and how it will solve the problem. Tell us the details of the bills that are being worked on at the federal levels.

I would love to hear arguments, with facts and data to back it up, about why it would be good to give citizenship to those who broke our laws.

Come on D-News you tell us that this is a complex issue then only present one side and tell us it is out of compassion that we should support it. Lets look at the real issue and the real solutions. Amnesty doesn't seem to be cutting it for a solution.

Brer Rabbit

"Federal immigration reform," is needed, but not the amnesty that the DesNews would like. The necessary reform would be, enforce the laws that are presently being ignored, fully defend the border and rescind the birthright citizenship. Make life so difficult in the U.S. which would prevent immigration violations, saving millions of jobs for working poor Americans.

At present illegal aliens are draining our social networking systems. America doesn't owe every one on the planet better conditions. We shouldn't be importing poverty, but exporting freedom. Illegal immigration does not export freedom!

The DesNews would allow the U.S. to be flooded with immigrants from all over the world. Or do you think they would just include Mexico and Latin America?

mfvw

Aside from the fact that you undermine your own story by picking multiple illegals with a criminal history who according to this fictional piece are all, very interestingly, making drastic improvements in their lives (ahem..I don't believe you) as your poster children..they are here illegally!!! As soon as they stepped over that border with the intent to stay without going through proper channels, every one of them has broken the law, usually multiple times!! Good job solidifying my feelings as to why deportation and zero tolerance of illegals sad stories shouldn't be dealt with any other way then showing them the door. Not only is it unfair to the existing americans, its unfair to the hispanics and every other person who has jumped through the hoops and have paid the price to be here legally..and yes I'm a Christian Mormon who assumes I have to follow the rules of this land and the countries I visit. It's all about rules folks. Thats what makes this a great country. Pray we have the courage to keep it that way.

@ anti-liar

Again, you fail to mention that more potent federal laws and programs then the Sandstrom bill already exist, like 287(g), secure communities etc. Sandstrom's bill will be nothing more than an ineffective unfunded mandate to resource strapped local law enforcement. I challenge anyone to make a rational case for how apprehending illegals and transfering them to ICE will not require additional training and resources.

@ CJ,

You miss the fact that if a federal guest worker program became law, those foreigners entering the country who had registered as guest workers will not be here "illegally." We'll know who and where they are and what they are doing. It will seperate them from the criminals. This is a no brainer many do not seem to get. I also can't believe how arrogant it is to assume as you do, that you speak for a majority of Americans.

I do support strictly enforcing all immigration related laws, with emphasis on serious criminals or anyone who fakes or lies about their legal status on forms or in interviews. I also support immigration laws that benefit everyone in our nation, like expanded H-1B visas and guest workers.
