For all of the sportswriters who called us “delusional” for going independent: you ate your words when you heard we signed an eight-year deal with ESPN. If you think signing a landmark deal with the king of sports broadcasting is delusional, you are wishing you could rewrite your articles. Booya!
Boise State is coming, BYU is running away.
It is just that simple.
West Coast Conference? This is a joke and
BYU is the punch line.
Very interesting Dick. Thanks for your research and your insights. Good article.
Star chamber, huh. I do not think this means what you think it means: "In modern usage, legal or administrative bodies with strict, arbitrary rulings and secretive proceedings are sometimes called, metaphorically or poetically, star chambers. This is a pejorative term and intended to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the proceedings."
But I am interested, who are the six that have called?
I would assume that the move had much more to do with the University's mission, which is aligned with the mission of the Church: Help all of God's children learn about the restored Gospel. I am a huge Aggie fan and cannot wait to beat the kittens in Logan this year, but I do believe this is a great move for the Church as a whole. Go Aggies!
Fascinating article which gives us just a bit of insight into the inner workings, thinking, planning, negotiating and much more that goes into making something of this magnitude get off the ground.
Those that try to dismiss the move and portray it as a naive knee-jerk reaction are themselves without much credibility.
As stated, it's now about the execution. However, they do seem to be off to a solid start.
Make no mistake, BYU is the servant — ESPN is the master. BYU will have very little say in what espn property their games will be played on and at what time.
BYU must win the BIG games. And as we’ve seen over the past 10 years — they have not been able to match the athletic talent of the national elite. Expect and epic beat down at Fl St.
To: Dektol ... you're absolutely right. Boise State is coming to, and BYU is running away from, a weakened conference with Slick Willy as a commissioner. When TCU wakes up and bolts as well, Boise State will have traded San Jose St, Hawaii, etc. for Colorado State (Fort Collins) and Wyoming (Laramie). That has to make recruits excited ... about as excited as living in Boise. Ouch.
This feat was phenomenal; key people with expertise in their fields, knowing how to act and be professional, pulling off a major accomplishment of monumental proportions. And some day the would-be naysayers will realize what has taken place--a major achievement in the world of collegiate sports. Dektol, 6:18 a.m. Sept. 7, 2010, will one day eat the words he's posted here this morning. Wins on the football field that bring winning seasons and national championships are short-lived and fleeting. Every sports team experiences great, good, lean and even terrible seasons over the years. Just look at the Cleveland Browns since Jimmy Brown retired so long ago.
Hedge, I guess you are not counting last years opener?
I was nice to see USU also give OU a run and Weber State also looked good. Boise State does not scare anyone and I think VT showed everyone what needs to be done. Bring em on!
Re: Dektol
You sure are opinionated for someone that has absolutely no clue!
Hedge criticizes and complains because he knows that BYU has once again bested his TUN. This one is going to hurt for a long time. It's really a sad commentary on a life when they can't leave BYU alone. Maybe one day hedge will wake up to see the sun rather than a mental pit of despair.
Cougs will be fine regardless! Go Cougs!
Dr. Samuelson, AD Holmoe, Worthen and Sandberg it is time to add a dreamer to the team. Here's my idea, it is time to call on one of those close friends (HOLIDAY BOWL) and remind them of the early years. Share with them that a #5 Big 12 team after 2010 is not too exciting and that a change to a BYU team that wins at least ten games would provide a great show against a #3 PAC-10 team (more often than not a team of Utah's caliber). What a treat it would be to face the U of U on a neutral cite. The $2.2 million would be a nice cap to a successful season. If you want I can take the point. The hard part will be keeping the PAC-10 as part of the package. They tend to get a little high-and-mighty when the Y comes a calling. You have my number, I'll wait for your call.
By far, the most interesting thing in the article, was that 6 teams contacted BYU about future scheduling, and it didn't name them. I'm guessing that BYU isn't looking to do any favors for anyone in the PAC, and the Mtn West isn't looking to do any favors for anyone at BYU, but what about the Big 12??? They just lost Nebraska and are short a team for 2011. So I checked their teams' schedules for 2011 and found a few teams in need of our help and some possibilities for the 6.
Oklahoma
Oklahoma St
Texas A&M
Texas Tech
Missouri
Missouri needs the most help with their schedule next season as they only have 9 games scheduled right now, so that's as close to a no-brainer as they come. The other 4 would probably come down to whoever is struggling the most to fill their slots on short notice. If all can do it, OU makes the most sense for a rematch and a national game. If they are struggling, KState will struggle the most. Guessing that BYU wants to help the BIG 12 though for the future???
Dick Harmon - Give it a rest. It is done, yesterdays news! Move on, if you can not come up with something new to report on then just keep quiet. It reportors like you that just keep drumming up the past to in order to show you know something. Move on, there is more to BYU than going independent.
BYU,
Now it's time to go out and show the nation that you are good enough to make it into a BCS Bowl. Until then have fun watching us on our journey to the National Championship this season!!!!
Ah, hedgehog....
I wondered when you were going to show your negative face around here again. Seems right after the news went out that Max Hall is now a full-fledged Arizona Cardinal you yewties got awfully quiet around here.
Anyway, you claimed, on MULTIPLE occasions, that Holmoe would be swiftly fired for trying to go independent once the WAC deal fell through.
We'll take that admission of error anytime, pal. Go right ahead, we're waiting....
And while you're at it you can apologize for claiming that Max Hall's horrible QB skills would 'never' allow him to make an NFL team.
yewties, somebody's gotta love 'em. I just don't know who...
BYU did a great job moving to independence
I will be a very interesting next few years particularly looking forward to seeing some games in parts of the country where BYU has been restricted from playing by MWC committments
BTW Dektol BYU is still playing Boise State for 4 years
HA HA! Dektol : Boise State is coming, and BYU is running. HA HA! Yep. You caught us. We heard Boise State was coming, and we held an emergency meeting at Denny's with a couple of the guys. We flipped a coin and said "You know, Boise State is a pretty tough team. They could make us look bad." That's when we had the idea "Hey, let's run away!" Everyone seemed to think that was a great idea. And as luck would have it, we got a call out of the blue from ESPN and they said "come and play on our network for the next 8 years." Well, since we didn't have much else going, we thought, "what the hay" and went for it.
Shucks, we plumb just got lucky I guess. Heck, even Notre Dame came a callin.
@Hedgehog: Even if your dillusional rant about ESPN being a Master, and BYU the servant were true (of course you must be privy to the contracts :) I would much rather have them as a Master then the Mountain. HA HA!
BYU Haters. HA HA!
To dallas aggie, your a man among boys.
