Something is very wrong in a society that charges a felony in the theft of 77 cents and yet reckless endangerment and child abuse are class a misdemeanors.
What an expensive seventy-seven cents. This will be costing Utahns 35k a year. :-)
Should the DA make the unfortunate decision to prosecute this one as a felony, he will need all the luck he can muster to get a jury to convict.
The crime merits punishment certainly, but a felony?
Sorry, he deserves it!
He only got 77 cents because that is all he found. If your purse with $500 was there, or your laptop or I-Pod, he would have grabbed them. If let back on the streets, he will be doing these crimes again. And again.
Three strikes and you are out.
Next time get an honest job.
It may cost $35K a year to lock him up, but I bet he stole more than that every year (and mostly did not get caught).
