I like the D news and am a regular reader, but this "story" has been spun way to hard and too often. Dnews fired people and they are running around waiving banners like it is a wonderful thing! I don't blame a little spin, but the paper is showing a lack of jounralistic integrity running this so hard in this (mis)direction. It is revolting (and tiresome).
Seems like this all started the other day with layoffs...
And @Oblio got it right...why are we STILL reading about this? Quit trying to convince yourselves that the layoffs were fine. If you're that concerned then maybe you made the wrong choice!
It's a little bit hypocritical to have deseret news staff that wasn't fired tell everyone (including those that were) why this is gonna be better for all of us. Stop naval-gazing, and accept the change and move on.
This is getting creepy.
This "story" is so infuriating, and yet so revealing. Joe Cannon says, "We are still going to be doing the best journalism..." Well, Mr. Cannon, the purpose of journalism is not to edify; it is to report. It is to get both sides of the story. You are not in the business of journalism. You are in the business of spin and of pandering. When 42% percent of your staff is laid-off, this is not progress. IT IS FAILURE. And Mr. Gilbert, here is the reason why your paper is failing: You believe that the majority of your readers want to read their own opinions so that they can congratulate themselves for not being as stupid as those who have differing opinions. That is not Christianity. That is selfishness, it is pride, and it is wrong. Those few wealthy and LOUD Mormons who DO want to just read their own opinions do NOT represent the majority of the SAINTS. "By their fruits ye shall know them." Well, the fruits of the Deseret News are job loss, and spin. The Salt Lake Tribune is doing just fine... it's called HONESTY and INTEGRITY.
It is too bad there is not a decent news outlet that just reports the news. It would be great to have news with no spin, no trying to convince people about different ideas, no sob stories, etc. Just the news. It won't happen.
The Washington Post and New York Times have a definite voice: for the Left. I trust the DNews will not turn in that direction.
Isn't this article just a rehash of the article(s) two days ago? Nothing new here. And to answer J-Dub, the SL Tribune is not doing just fine. It's ownership recently declared bankruptcy and is heavily in debt. Chances are, it cannot continue long-term in its present state and will be forced to make similar business moves sometime down the road if it wants to survive.

Just don't watch Fox News and you'll be fine.
Over the past 50 years the Deseret News has gradually gone down hill to the point where I can't recognize it from all the other liberal rags. I will be terminating my subscription when it comes due.
In this information age, all of us were clamoring for more information at the speed of light. I am glad they have combined together for that purpose..
Newspaperreader,
I am glad to see that someone else thinks that it is a sign of not doing well that the company that owns the Salt Lake Tribune filed for bankruptcy.
If you want to see spin, it is that papers attempts to make the Deseret News look like a sinking ship.
Richie,
There are multiple issues in the DN's allegedly going "liberal". One of them is more use of the AP over time. This is due to a decline in ad revenues with a rise in costs of having out of town journalists.
It appears this new structure will have more actual journalists and allow in-house reporting on more stories.
At least the DN in general uses in house writers for Utah stories and it did send reporters and photographers to Haiti this year as well as Ukraine and many other places.
The local paper that my family gets uses the AP to report on events that occur less than 10 miles from my house.
