to the ute fans that feel it is so important to point out your two undefeated seasons, yea that is pretty good. I only have one reply, Sep 23, 2007: Utah 0 UNLV 27, straight off U of U website. HaHaHaHaHaHa.

Funny title, "BYU football: Jake Heaps and Jake Locker will square off on Saturday"..... FINALLY, like this has been YEARS in the making. Lets see, Jake Locker: 28 games, 36 TDs, 26 INT's, 5374 Yds so far...... Jake Heaps:........ crickets.........

Sounds exciting, full of drama, comedy, suspense, thrills, the feel good hit of the summer. But I already seen The Two Jakes and it wasn't as good as Chinatown.

Prediction: awww.... this is tough, the spread has dropped down to 2.5, even 1.5 which basically makes it's a toss up. BYU wins 30-29

    Parting prediction: VT wins 26-24

I'm a dyed in the wool Husky fan and have watched Jake Heaps during his HS career. Great kid & no anger here. Most of us get why he opted for BYU. Wish him luck every day but tomorrow.

Does this article kind-of disrespect Riley? It is like Tebow and Orton in Denver...guess what? Orton has stepped up. But really Jake Heaps hasn't even set foot in a D-1 game yet. He may be the most amazing QB but don't destroy his chances with hype. You can count on Jake Locker bringing his A-game tomorrow.

One last thought: Is Bronco protecting heaps from the somewhat angry response from Husky fans?

It is funny reading posts from Ute "fans" trying to explain the slogan. If it neds that much explanation mm82 then it is a lousy slogan. It really makes no difference if it is the muse that came up with it or the team. Are you saying that the muse fears the future of Utah football?

But you keep on spinning in the wind.

le prof- you are right, we should show some class. I will say this- Bronco is a very good coach! And I think Heaps will be a star! But it's so fun to cheer against them!!!! That's what makes a great rival!

There is an important difference between "Envy the Past, Fear the Future" slogan and the "Quest for Perfection" slogan.

"Envy and Fear" was created by the MUSS and is the slogan for the MUSS. Not the slogan for the Utah football team. The football team has its own slogan in the lockr room, which has not and will not necessarily be made public.

On the other hand, "Quest for Perfection" WAS the slogan for the actual football team. Huge difference.

Both slogan are funny and a bit stupid, the difference being that "Envy and Fear" is the slogan for the (sometimes over the top) MUSS and "Quest for Perfection" was the slogan for the actual (and sometimes over the top) football coaches and players. Take that difference for whatever it is worth.

As opposed to future Novembers anywhere in Idaho and anywhere in New Mexico? LOL.

Thanks for all the explanations on the "Quest" as well. I think finishing #2 to Florida and 13-0, undefeated, PERFECT, the same year you all had your amazing run of 11-2 (not perfect) is the reason it is a bit funny.

Relax though, you still have this year.

Actually last year was your real opportunity to take it to the next level of greatness. But, there was that major choke at home against FSU. Ouch!

    Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Read the positive comments by classy Cougar fans after the U's thrilling win over Pitt. Compare them with the few negative and immature comments by the classless Ute wannabe's on this blog and be glad you're a Cougar. It's so much better to be postive and supportive of good teams!

BYU fans are FUNNY!!! Been to a BCS game lately? Hey the Cubs were on top of the baseball world once in 1908!!! Utah got into a great conference and You didn't! So you are an independent? Sorry no one wanted you? Keep 1984 alive! under that old system the Utes would have been champs 2 years ago, after they beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl! The last time Alabama lost! That was in a BCS game! Those are fun! Good luck getting into one?

"Envy the Past, Fear the Future"

I guess that depends on what we call "past". The Yankees have a past, Notre Dame has a past, the Celtics have a past. If there is even a portion of your current student body who was there when your great "past" started (2004), that probably doesn't count on quite the same level.

As for "fear the future", I'd be a little nervous too if my future Novembers consist of trips to Pullman, WA and Boulder, CO.

The Quest was simply a goal, the highest goal, but a realistic goal.

After finishing in the Top 15, with 11-2, undefeated conference championships two years in a row, it's not a stretch to set a goal of having an undefeated season and possibily having a shot at another National Championship.

It's laughable how juvenile Utah fans belittle the Quest, when BYU's 10-3, Top 25, 2008 season is still better than all but 4 seasons in Utah's history.

No, intentionally misunderstanding is not the same as understanding. It is misunderstanding on purpose. If you think it's a double negative.... well... I guess you should have got your education somewhere other than the "research institution" on the hill. If I had said "not misunderstanding" then you would be right... but your not.

But... I guess your sad incomprehension of the english language explains why the muse thinks it is such a clever slogan. BTW - "sad incomprehension" does not mean that you comprehend.

You know - if 11-2 seasons make a t-shirt slogan hilarious then I will take them. The point is "the quest" was not a bad slogan until you twisted it's meaning "Envy and fear" is a slam against the Utes by their own fans.

Thats OK. You guys are still new to the big stage. Stay close and we will help you through the tough times :)

At least utahcountyute was right about one thing. Bronco is starting Nelson to try and keep some of the pressure off Heaps but based on this article being written it doesn't seem like that is working.

At least Jeff Call didn't write a stupid article criticizing the 2 QB system when the only reason they are going to play 2 QBs is to keep some of the pressure off Heaps and see which of the two perform better on the field in a real game. It is not a long term plan.

Why can't the Utes stick to commenting about their victory over Pitt? Or at least comment about Heaps?

BCS blah blah blah. Which fan group is the one that can't live in the present?

Even though the present and future for both schools is looking pretty great.

You never cross any lines... wink wink

So isn't "intentially misunderstanding" the same as understanding? It wasn't that the slogan was bad anyway, it was just how it all panned out that made it hilarious. Will always be fun revisit too. Thanks

@utahcountyute: Really???? As a Cougar fan I don't envy your past at all. BYU has a MUCH richer past than Utah, so..... are you kidding me?

And as a BYU fan the only thing that makes me sick is from laughing at your comment.

"Envy the Past, Fear the Future"

LOL!!!!... Really? Was the whole muse drunk when they came up with this?

People don't envy their own past and only you can fear your own future. The only way thins makes sense is if you envy your biggest rivals past and fear for your own future.

Any you uties thought the Quest was a bad slogan. At least with the quest you had to intentionally misunderstand it to mock it. With yours you have to intentionally misunderstand it for it to make sense.

    Way to go.

    Sept. 3, 2010 11:28 a.m.

Fear and envy, is that really what you want to hang your hat on?

Envy = a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another's advantages, success, possessions, etc. (ie. National Championship, Heisman trophy, etc, etc,)

Fear = a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid. (ie. impending conference irrevelance).

And the Utes bag on "Quest for Perfection?" At least BYU set their sights on something positive and inspiring.

This Ute slogan invokes images on the utes curled up in the fetal position wishing to be left alone and hoping that it will all go away!!!

    utahcountyute

It all comes down to being a PERENNIAL Top 25 team, not merely having two great teams in your entire history.

Since the AP poll (the oldest poll) was first published in 1939:

BYU: FOUR Top 25 finishes in the last FOUR years (SEVENTEEN overall)

Utah: FIVE Top 25 finishes in SEVENTY years

IF Utah manages to finish in the Top 25 this year, it will be the first time Utah has ever had more than 2 straight Top 25 finishes.

BYU has already done that three times.

Kyle has never won back-to-back conference championships.

Bronco won back-to-back championships in his 2nd and 3rd seasons.

Get back to us when Utah manages to put together a string of success, rather than being a one-hit wonder.

    @utahcountyute & JJJHS, etal:

It's guys like you that make me want to take shots at anything to do with Utah football. But I'm sure you will continue to stir the pot.

Constructive criticism is expected, but everyone knows when it goes over the line.

    Douglas and Striker,

The envy is coming out in both of you. All those "championships" and it all comes down to how many times has byu gone undefeated in the last 10 years? 0. This is what the envy the past is about, and the future is the AQ bid in 2011.

Envy the past, fear the future is spot on because every byu fan is just sick that Utah has taken their future in football.

Two quarterbacks at the same time is no good. It sounds like politics is in full play here and in Utah that is a guarateed failure; they can never get any thing done except squable. Unless the less senior quaterback is super more qualified than the senior quarterback, then use the senior quarterback. Now if the problem lies in the coaching staff then the head coach had better be the quality he is supposed to be or get another. Any game sport needs to have one qualified captain that the team members will support. Two people do not have the same personalities, even with identical twins. Made a good decision and get on with it.

"Envy the Past, Fear the Future"

Really, those shirts say that? That IS funny! Breaking into the most corrupt sports organization ever to hit this planet must be something to brag about up on the little hill. I know, 6 years of some good football somehow seems to trump over two decades straight of championships and trophies. Fear the future is right on because beating out 11 other teams is what it will take to get a championship, instead of 8. That would cause me to fear too.

Loved the history of the Jakes. That was fun to read. What an extra fun game for Washington fans. One drive your cheering, the next drive you don't know whether to cheer for Heaps or cheer against. Talk about an emotional game!

"Will Heaps continue the tradition of crying BYU QBs?"

BYU has their tradition of QB's. What kind of tradition does the U have? Mock our tradition, but at least we have one.

By the way, those "Muss" shirts your teams have... "Envy the Past, Fear the Future" are laughable. Envy the past 6 years? Cause really there is nothing to envy before Urban Meyer. Nothing, no tradition, no list of outstanding QB's etc...

This is coming from someone who is a student at the U

@JJJHS: It all depends on how the Utes and their fans are. I guess I could pour some beer on your family and tout them with all kinds of verbal abuse and then see what you would write about in your next post and then call you a crying, whiney Ute fan! The real question is "Will JJJHS make excuse's for the Utes when they don't make it to the rose bowl in the first 10 years of being in the Pac-whatever?"

Hey-JohnJacobJingleHeimerSchmidt-Why don't you take your sorry and sad act to the Tribune. We are tired of you bagging on anything BYU. Your Utes beat a highly over-rated team last night. A top 15 team that was given 3+turnovers and still couldn't beat them. Why aren't you thumping your chest about that?

Sucessfull for who ? The only up side I keep hearing about is how this helps Jake and his footbal future.

This game is about team not the individual. It goes without question that Jake is a terrific qb and has all the skill that BYU could want. However, This 2010 team is young and will need to have a leader that can move and read and have more in his early game then hail marry long balls and pressing it into double cover.

The speed of a real D1 game is fast, light years ahead of what a true freshman qb has seen in highschool. The pressure of the D1 game will expose the weak spots of any qb including Heaps. The test that Bronco has presented is the correct one the challege is now infront of Riley to step up and take the starting job, he has beengiven the starting job so it is his to win.

Remeber the OU prediction this same reporter made last year. Yeah right he was dead wrong.

Reading between the lines, it is obvious that there is still a lot of anti-Mormon sentiment in Seattle. I used to live there and it seems that things haven't changed much. Hopefully, if Heaps is successful, it will have a positive effect in his home state.

Great article on Jake. I wish his family well If BYU is going to compete on the highest level as an independent, and have a shot at a BCS bowl it will ride on Jake Heaps, and his broad shoulders. Now give him the ball and let Magic Happen.
