I watched Jim in the Miracle Bowl stun the SMU team with his heroic pass to Clay
Brown when half of the stadium crowd had exited. Those of us who stuck it out to
the end were more than well rewarded. If BYU had been as big a name back then as
they are now, Doug Flutie's hail mary would not have had gotten all the press
instead of Jim's. And the thing is, Jim's was not just one long hail mary, he
had to orchestrate three end-of-game drives! One colorful young athlete, to say
I was a little young then, but there's clips of that game on youtube and all I
can say is...what a game!
Not sure if anyone knows this, but Lavell wanted to punt on fourth down and Jim
refused to come out. They called time out and Jim told him that they were going
for it. That is a bold winner. Jim is a winner. Time for BYU to put his jersey
up in the air...
