Thia is just BYU's vote for capitalism over socialism. Let the market decide what value is in a game or as team. I'm tired of calling all the different Comcast affiliates and begging them to broadcast the game. It was pretty obvious that everyone was happy sucking money off the top - except the one on the top. Good riddance MWC. Now let's win it for the final season!!

This is the beginning of the end of BYU football.

This move really worries me. I fear for the worst and hope for the best. I don't think it will hurt the other sports much, but for football it is a very high-risk, high-reward move. It also has the potential to be disastrous. Time will tell whether or not it was a good decision.

ROCK ON!

Dumb move. Enjoy obscurity BYU...

To Bleed Cougar Blue - before you put us in the same sentence as Utah, Boise State and TCU, we may need to ACTUALLY go to a BCS bowl game. Independance is great - monetarily. If we upgrade our schedule now that we are independant, we will be FURTHER from a BCS bowl not closer. We couldn't get there playing a MWC schedule.

Gutsy move Cougs. I have confidence in those who made this decision. At BYU, the sport, whatever it may be, is a way for us to expose people to the Y and the Church. Our mission is much different than most schools. This move will help BYU receive much broader exposure across the country...something that couldn't happen very often being affiliated with the MWC & the Mtn. Congrats to the Big Blue.

Good Move!! BYU would still like a BIG 12 invite (which I think will still happen) and now they can show the Big 12 how much money they can bring to the table. The WCC is a way better conference in basketball and a ton better in baseball! I like it!

Stay classy!

Hear that, Cougars? It's the sound of laughter from SLC and the rest of the MWC.

hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I think the key here is an ESPN deal. If we get one this could be great. If we don't we will wish this thing never got out. In the end we are just hoping and praying for a BCS conference invite but without an ESPN deal it could be a painful wait.

Does anyone really care where the Swimming and diving team ends up? College sports is all about Football and hoops. Indy in Football=more money, better exposure, opponenets and control.
Basketball is in just as good or perhaps a better conference depending on the year.
Good luck Ladies track!

Ha ha ha ha ha!!! I can't stop laughing about this so called brilliant move. Hard to believe it took this long to make this move. All I can say is it's great to be a Ute!! Holmoe should lose his job over this.

BleedCougarBlue

Hey Utes (notice I didn't say "yewts", there's a difference and if you don't know what it is talk to Max Hall) -

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement about us going independent.

Good luck against Pittsburg Thursday!

Till we meet in November...

I would be less than honest if I didn't say that I have considerable misgivings concerning this move, the success of which might not be known for years. However, from a risk / reward standpoint, I think it is great! It is a gutsy move but the upside is huge!

BYU should be able to continue to attract top-notched athletes to Provo because of the competition they will play as well as the TV exposure they will get. With the help of ESPN they should be able to continue to land games against the top teams in the country. Now all they have to do is win . . .

Both BYU and Utah are headed into uncharted territories next year. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

I predicted last week and again yesterday, that Hedgie would put his tail between his legs and go as far away as he could to find a deep enough hole to crawl into, to eat his humble pie without being seen. Haven't seen him today.

San Diego Chargers Fan

BYU alum here, went to law school at U. San Diego. It is a beautiful campus -- but hard to find a parking spot amongst all the BMWs.

The only basketball game that the student body gets excited about each year is Gonzaga. You see all the students wearing "Beat Gonzaga" t-shirts. It is a madhouse.

I think that will change now... "Beat BYU" will be the new slogan each year.

Utah Valley Guy

This is great news, IMHO.

Going independent in football is dynamite, letting BYU control its scheduling, broadcasting and bowl destiny. We're a better fit with the WCC in all sports the WCC supports, especially basketball. I'd much rather see BYU play Gonzoga and Santa Clara et al. for a tournament berth than Wyoming and Colorado State et al.

I'm sure BYU looked at those sports like track that don't fit in the WCC and has viable options to keep them thriving.

Best of all, this means more exposure for BYU and its sports teams!

Aggie84

BYU's legacy about thinking only of themselves continues on. Integrity, committment, nope just money and recognition. Sad day indeed.

Yes, the Utes are in the PAC but few beyond the West Coast care or watch unless they manage to get into the Rose Bowl. How relevant are the AZ schools?

----------

Let me see PAC-12 or WCC?

I guarantee you that if BYU was offered the option they wouldn't take the "less exposre" in the PAC-12.

Arizona schools are probably little more relevant then the indey schools of Navy and Army as far as winning is concerned.

BTW one way to know is if BYU got the Notre Dame or the Navy/Army BCS exception.

The question is BYU SOS, will "Notre Dame of the West" have a stronger S0S then Boise playing in the WAC? I think Notre Dame will play BYU annually in November but the other 6+ cupcakes will be from conferences like CUSA.
