First you have to convince people of the need to store food...
President Hinkley once said, He wasn't sure he would be remembered as the prophet who was instrumental in building the most temples. He said he was afraid to be remembered as the prophet who couldn't get the members to get there food storage IN TIME!
hum..... as we are faced with hurricane Earl this weekend, on the east coast and have had temperatures in the 90's, which is very unusual for where I live, I too wonder if I am prepared! Yet I have headed the counsel of the Prophet and pray I am.
What is a plastic gift bag? I have never seen any gift bags made of anything buy paper. And I have never seen one that is resealable. Where do you find such a thing, and please run a picture of one. THanks.
I've had the food storage specialist a couple different times. What gets me is that people will have all their wheat - and no wheat mill.
As for getting your family to eat it - after you get the wheat mill, START USING IT. Make pancakes, waffles, cookies, homemade bread. It's a lot cheaper, a lot healthier, and if it's sweet, they'll usually eat it. And it just doesn't have to take all that much time. Weekend nice breakfasts, have a good stand mixer for bread kneading, etc. Some mills will also do dry beans, throw some white bean flour in your baked goods, they'll never know it's in there. And, when you do get laid off or have unexpected bills, they will already be used to the taste.
I sure hope that with the recent cuts of staff at the DNews, that helpful articles like this one will continue.
Thank you we need a lot more ideals like these in the days to come. At least those who want the information have more sources and ways to prepare their own food storage.
Dear Mom in MO,
For a picture of the bags look in the photo gallery and you see one of me laughing while making pancakes. Look toward the window and you will see a blue gift bag, this is the bag I used to hold the ingredients for the coconut pancakes. As far as the reclosable bags, they are sandwich bags etc. which are filled with ingredients. If you have further questions please feel free to contact me.
Take care,
Michelle
What a great article! Makes the whole food storage thing seem not so overwhelming.
(Where do you buy the bags?)
What a great idea! Love the food storage in a bag. Looking forward to getting the book.
What a great idea! Love the food storage in a bag idea. It makes it so easy for when you need to use it. Everything is right there in the bag.
Dear Mrs. H,
I purchased my bags at Xpedex; however, you may purchase them through on-line stores, such as U-line. Be sure to price check and always ask for a volume discount, not only for bags but for all of your purchases. If you have more questions, don't hesitate to contact me or visit me at the Utah State Fair!

The bag meal idea is really interesting; I'd be interested to know how healthy the recipes are. I'll have to check it out next time I'm in Utah. I don't cook with many canned prepared foods like "cream of" soups because of their high fat & sodium content, not to mention all the preservatives, HFCS, etc. so it's been hard for me to find a food storage system that doesn't rely on those.
I wish someone would write a book about how to do food storage using organic, whole, natural ingredients instead of highly-processed, unhealthy stuff. (no such thing as canned organic, hormone-free meat as far as I know) I realize that in a disaster situation I'd be happy to have any food--even unhealthy food.
How do I rotate my food storage in when it's shelf-stable, but not the food that we prefer to eat? I try new recipes 3-4 nights per week. We enjoy eating new and different things all the time. I don't want to have to eat stuff I don't like just for the sake of rotating in my food storage.
The monthly savings on the family food budget really caught my interest. Trying to make it on one income these days is getting harder and harder. Where can I order the book? I want my husband to give it to me for my birthday, so I always get what I want and gift wrap it with a card from him.
Dear MerryMagPie,
You will find only a few recipes that call for "Cream of" soups in our book. As far as organic canned soups there are many more on the grocery shelves than there use to be. However, we have chosen a different approach, we grow our own vegetables and fruits or purchase from organic farmers whenever possible. And home can these items including homemade soups. As far as where you can get canned organic, hormone free meat, we solved this dilemma by home canning our meats too. This way our family has healthful eating from a can. The recipes and instructions are very simple and can be found in the last section of our book titled, "Cool stuff your momma never taught you!"
Take care,
Michelle
Dear Mom in MO,
Thank you for your interest and support! You may purchase our book at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Borders, Deseret Book, and Seagull Book and Tape. I had to laugh because I have been known to buy my own presents too :)
I loved the article on Trent and Michelle's food storage book, It's in the Bag! Wow what a great concept. This was a great write up about the important message that the Snow's are teaching about in their book! I really feel that if people will try it out and make their own bag meals they will feel peace and secure about the future. What a great feeling to know that in any situation you will be able to be able to feed your family and friends. Valerie Philips, you always write such amazing articles!!! Thank you for another one!
Thanks for your response, Michelle! I'll be in town visiting family next week so I'll look for a copy while I'm there. I'm intrigued!
Michelle, Thank you so much for answering our questions on here. It's great to have someone so involved.
I plan on getting your book. Great ideas!
