I think there is alot of underlaying forclosures in this report. It seems to me that ESPN is saying there would be alot of help from ESPN to set up schedules, etc. I have been a fan for 65 years, I would really like to see them make the announcement of Independence from the MWC----this would also help out USU by doing so. I think the Utah schools need to stay together in all this. They can be a great support for one another. I think BYU-USU, BYU-Utah will continue to be some of the best games for fans to see and have an interest in. Go Cougs.

Looking very much like the big dog is getting out to the kennel. Not many teams in the country can sign their own deal with ESPN. I remember a puppy sometime ago that had dreams of being let out.

In other news, Mcdonalds has just announced their new find waldo,,,,errrrrr find the utes game board.

I'm not sure why everyone keeps citing the Denver Post article. I read it and it was obvious that the reporter was just relaying rumors, probably originating from the MWC offices. This article has good information from ESPN, but it is obvious that the ESPN officials are not going to leak BYU's intentions (as some of the WAC and MWC schools have done or tried to do). The media should just stick with facts and leave rumors to the bloggers.

There is some validation here of the value that some have questioned of BYU. They are wanted and undoubtedly intrigue ESPN. They want them to play bigger match ups obviously.Does that validate BYU's concern about the conference not meeting their needs? ESPN would obviously give more exposure. It does appear to be a good match.

--------
Q: How attractive is BYU to television as an independent?
A: "It's hard to say. You have to consider who they would be playing..."
--------
Q: How about Cal Davis, UT San Antonio, LA Tech?

MenaceToSociety

Dropping to the WAC conference just to duck playing Boise and TCU, and as a knee jerk reaction to Utah having such success and receiving such attention? Weak.

BYU's arrogance will not allow them to A) watch Utah have such success without throwing a temper tantrum and B) finish third in their own conference beind Boise and TCU on a regular basis. No way they can finish 3rd in an inferior conference regularly while Utah is competing for Pac 12 division titles on a regular basis.

Who wrires these headlines?

"discus BYU'sfuture"????

The Wac deal is not dead. BYU's influence may bring others of national importance into the WAC. A little more than Texas San Antonio.

shaybo

I don't see those teams as being an upgrade.

TWO

With BYU and Utah out of the MWC, the tv contract the MWC has is void. They will have to start over with contract talks.

Ok.

and on and on and on.

SoCAl How about Texas, Oklahoma,Fla State. With ESPN brokering you trying to tell all of us all BYU is going to get is Cal Davis? I sense Jealousy. Why don't you copy the quote where the ESPN exec says BYU is one of a few that could go independent. I doubt the Ute's was on his mind. LOL

Old Gregg

@menace,

Utah's arrogance will not allow them to A)Not comment on every BYU related article. B)Sit back and watch/listen about BYU on the news and not be filled with jealousy even though they have "moved on." C)Despite their consistent 2nd/3rd place finishes in the MWC, trick themselves to thinking that they will be top contenders year in and year out in the conference of champions.

How's that for arrogance? Also, I find it funny that last year pretty much every ute fan I talked with would say how weak the pac10 is. BYU's huge victory over UCLA was discredited because the pac10 is "weak." Same with their victory over Oregon State. Now all the sudden it's the conference of champions with only "elite" teams. I don't get it. Anyway, arrogance much?

The addition of Fresno St. and Nevada is a quantity upgrade not a quality upgrade. Let's just say they are good enough to have received consideration over the other WAC teams.

Fresno St.Nevada to the MWC = Utah/Colorado to the PAC-10

Same viewpoint, same reasons for adding. More teams in the conference is simply more revenue and a chance to play a championship game. There are simply no other reasons for it.

Bluto

Why would BYU ever want to associate with Fresno, Nevada or Thompson again?

Unethical, untrustworthy back-stabbers.

Move on BYU and carve out your own new niche.

cougsrock

I would be very disapointed in BYU if they ever stayed in the MWC. What they did was slimy.

Other sources say that the MTN TV contract has a clause that if both Utah and BYU leave then the contract is voidable by Comcast.

What a gift by BYU to the other MTN teams. The MTN could then negotiate a decent contract (probably with ESPN).

BYU could still do a deal with the WAC if they wanted to but there would not be a lot of pressure on the MTN teams to move to the WAC.

The WAC is supposed to be working on Utep, SMU and HOU. If they could somehow get 2 of the 3 that would make the WAC attractive. The BYU TV coverage may be of interest to those teams. CUSA does not have a great TV deal anyway. That might also be enough to cause FSU to think about the 5 mill.

A WAC with SMU and HOU would be better for BYU. BYU is better known in NV and CA than in TX. It creates better exposure for BYU.

I am not fond of a WAC deal but I do feel BYU needs to make a move. The current MTN deal is dead.

Uteology

4 million from ESPN?!? What's holding them back from announcing two weeks ago?

Can ESPN get BYU 3-4 ranked teams annually? We know playing in the WAC they won't play a single ranked team.

I think Notre Dame said they would be interested in a November game.

I think BYU owes USU so they should join the WAC as planned.

Bugoff

There may be other potential deals coming up that are not being discussed in the media. Joining the Big 12 of even the Big East may serve BYU better than going independent?

Further, the WAC is trying to replace NV and CA teams with TX teams. That may be holding things up?

ESPN will pay a lot more for a match up with a good TV market team than for most of the current WAC or MTN teams. BYU needs more Mid-Western, Southern and Eastern teams and very few Inter Mountain teams.

Why not wait for the best deal and situation. It is pretty clear BYU is going to make a move and on its own time table.

The WAC/WCC deals may not be best. Why rush into a bad deal?
