Classy, articulate comments, Nelson and Heaps. Good luck this year!
And they're going independant. Mark it down.
Ok, let’s get it out of the way.
2 quarterbacks = 0 quarterbacks
What a mess.
“And they're going independant. Mark it down. “
Fiddler ,
Just like I “marked down” your words that St. Heaps would be the starting QB….got it.
This will be fun to watch. I believe if they had decided on ONE quarterback against WA, they would have waited until game day to announce what was happening - since they're playing BOTH, announcing now doesn't really provide WA with any more intel than they had yesterday.
As the old saying goes: if two people are in charge, nobody is in charge.
I think that this is a mistake.
A young inexperienced offense needs some consistency in a QB, they need a set, constant leader. The coaches need to make a choice and let their offense mesh together, Or its going to be a long year. We have all the talent in the world, but without the team chemistry and mechanics down. That wont matter.
I thought that the starter would be obvious by now. You have two QB's. One is a 23yr old Junior, the other an 18yr old true freshman. The report we have gotten through spring and fall camp was that they were neck and neck. How could a true freshman who has been in the program 6 months be equal to if not better than an experienced JR QB who has been in the program 2 years now. I think the better QB is obvious.
With BYU's passing offense, Proven strengths at WR, and the O-Line. What reason is there not to start the best pure passer that has ever stepped foot in Provo? Unless Nelson is clearly the better QB, and the best option for the team. You start Heaps.
Two quarterback system as expected.
Expecting lots of lame ridicule from Utah fans even though Utah has essentially been running a 2-quarterback system for several years.
Does Louks/Johnson ring a bell?
Yeah, somehow Utah fans will spin that as being somehow different, just like BYU exploring its options to leave the MWC is somehow different than Utah actually leaving the MWC.
This won't work long term! Before BYU fans argue with me, take a look at how many other teams do the two QB thing? One will emerge as the better QB!
Oooooooooo. I haven't seem too many rotating QB schemes succeed in major college football. I really hope that this is one that does. Obviously, only time will tell. Go Cougs!
I like the decision. With Nelson starting at Washington it will create quite the buzz in the stadium when Heaps finally takes the field in his home state.
I think the true starter will emerge fairly quickly once they get into real game situations.
Just like going independent, this is a risky move that could be either really good or really bad. It has been a strange couple of weeks for BYU fans!
re: Hedghog
We shall see. Normally, I think you might be right, but it has worked well for some teams in some situations before, and I think this is one situation where it could work again.
Two BYU quarterbacks, and probably thousands of armchair quarterbacks.
I believe Coach Mendenhall knows more about football and the situation than all of us. He's made his choice, let's see what happens.
If both play vs. Washington, by game 3 or 4 they will have a clear cut starter. BYU has no clue who will be better in game situations right now. Put them both in there and see the cream rise to the top.
HH, where did I say that? I can play that game as well. Just like you said the University of Utah led the charge against prop 8.
As far as your views on our 0 QBs, beat us at something then come talk.
YES! This is just what I was hoping for! I remember seeing Florida's duel QB system and it was one of the coolest I've ever seen. I hate Meyer and the Gators, but wow was that year fun to watch. They also won the NC that year as I recall, so any fool who says that system doesn't work knows nothing about history and two QBs.
Whether it works or not, I'm excited to see it.
oh well, I was hoping they would announce at game time. what about 3rd & 4th string qb? one more week to go for game time.
GO COUGARS!
mendenhall should have listend to my monday morning qb advice.....should have benched the marginal Hall and played Riley last year ...that way, this year there would be no controversy
Well, we know exactly what this means.
Both quarterbacks have shown up and proved themselves in fall camp. They decided to name both men the "starters". It's no secret Jake Heaps will be taking over the reigns after 4 or 5 games with Riley Nelson taking 5-10 snaps every outing after that.
Seems like a killer duo. Riley will keep defenses on their toes and Jake throws the pretties long ball I have seen in a long time. While at the open scrimmage a couple weeks ago both QB's impressed me, but Heaps' ball was flawless and smooth.
"Two QB's = No QB" is completely false.
Two QB's = twice as much leadership and twice as much potency. This is a great "mess" to have. If one QB is having a rough game the other QB can step in and change the momentum and reverse the flow.
Great Coaching, Bronco. We support your decisions here.
