Caroon believes in public education so strongly that he sends his kids to private school? Oh, dear.

Big mistake, Mayor Caroon. Huge mistake.

Do you also drive a Hummer?

I'd think a man with three degrees might know a bit more about education than a man who dropped out of college like our esteemed governor.

"The governor also said Corroon's support for public schools "borders on the hypocritical," because the mayor attended private schools and is sending his children to them as well.

"How can someone who has never had first-hand experience with public education understand how it really works?" Herbert asked, noting his children and grandchildren are products of the public school system."

Mayor Corroon isn't a one man operation but even if he was he would be more intelligent than the college drop out who is currently our Governor. Sheryl Allen and others in his campaign understand education and can develop the means to help us improve our education system. It is hypocritical to suggest that someone who actually finished school and who has worked hard and isn't a drop out doesn't understand public education considering that others on his staff have attended public schools.

If Herbert claims Corroon can't understand the needs of public schools because he didn't attend them than how can Herbert know anything about Higher education since he dropped out. His staff attending colleges would not make up the different if the same isn't true of Corroon.

Herbert is hypocritical

First Mayor Corroon needs to learn how to balance his own budget before he tries to reform the educational system. His county government is adrift without leadership. Promote him for his incompetence, not his achievements. It's called the Peter Principle.

Oh Peter. You should have seen this coming, bud.

Band aid? Education gets the bulk of our money now. Trim back the administration over head and put it in the class room. When a democrat wants to stop the band aid approach we better hold on to our wallets. It means TAX INCREASE.

Where's the beef? "The plan doesn't include a tax increase AT THIS TIME." Ah. So in the plan, where it talks about raising taxation rates for utilities, eliminating job creating tax incentives, and urging local entities to maximize their property taxes to the highest possible level, that's not a tax increase, right?

That's just taxes "grow(ing) commensurately with population and inflation", right? Clue to you Mr. Corroon. Utahn's regard taxes that "grow commensurately with population and inflation".

Question: Why should a tax grow with population? Aren't there economies of scale that come with growing population?

Answer: Because Mayor Corroon wants to find a way to raise your taxes without calling it a tax hike. It's a "growth" in revenue, a "revenue enhancement", or a "tax adjustment." Pitiful.

I have acquaintances that are just full of parenting advice--especially those that are well-educated, seem to have a plethora of ideas for me. And yet, so often, their advice goes completely ignored because of one simple fact: they don't have kids so there's really no basis upon which to judge whether the advice really works.

Likewise, when you give advice on public education, it helps to trust the system you're intent on fixing...

Pols have been rolling out the tired old "Utah is last in per pupil spending" chestnut for decades. And every one of them conveniently ignores Utah's unique deomgraphics and the fact that overall we provide our public school children with an excellent education. Sure, everyone wants more money...and lower taxes. Our public education teachers do a terrific job and will continue to do so. Herbert's commitment to public education is well documented. Corroon should either tell the whole story or find something else to complain about.

A mention of the 600 lb. gorilla in the room would be salient in this discussion - Quit having more children than you're willing and financially able, to educate.
There.

Do as I say; not as I do. Once again Peter Principle Corroon is telling others what to do but won't do it himself. Remember he wanted Gov. Herbert to cut his salary by 10%. But Peter didn't want that to happen to his own salary. Now we are being lectured by the good Professor Peter on his masterful understanding of public education - something he has not personally experieced nor have his children. Reminds me too much of another well educated lawyer, with limited life experience, who now resides at the White House.

'Our unique demographics' does not justify spending less on what our kids need. Would you give less food to each of 10 children just because there are more of them? Of course you'd be giving out more food than if there were 3 but the 10 children deserve just as much food as the 3.

Our unique demographics demand exactly what Corroon is proposing. That we spend more where it counts: Our children! School is intellectual food. The Republican-run legislature in Utah just don't understand that they are starving our children! 40 kids in a classroom has to stop.

Peaceful: nice to see I was not the only one to catch the fallacy of Gov Herbert's comment. If "firsthand experience" is now required, then no one will ever qualify for any position, because no one individual has done it all.

Pilot, by your own similarly flawed logic, unless you've been either County Mayor (or Governor for that matter), then you aren't qualified to lecture Prof Peter on how well he is or is not doing his job.

C'mon people - I don't think any of us would take the position that you have to be a car mechanic to understand how one works.

JAAG-

"C'mon people - I don't think any of us would take the position that you have to be a car mechanic to understand how one works. "

How about having driven a car before? Pete's never been involved in public schools. That's not enough for me.
