Good for Lynn Durant for voting against this. Now all the city counsel needs to do is stop funding the Miss Salem contest completely. If there isn't enough interest to fund this through private sponsors/donations, then too bad. This is not a function of government, period. Use this money, along with all the other funds that go toward Salem Days to fix the worst roads in Utah.
It is too bad that the council changed their minds. It is also too bad that more citizens didn't know this was coming back before the council and they could really hear what other's think before making another decision.
I hope that the scholarship of this queen, that wanted to go to miss utah so badly, helps pay the fees.
By the way, the Jr Miss program is a classy program. It reflects the values of Salem much more than Miss Utah. I hope Salem will continue to fund them.
I don't think people realize the affect that a "Miss" makes on a community. There are many things that wouldn't exist in Salem had it not have been for Miss Salem: the stage at the pond, the monthly newsletters, and now concerts at the pond. The city is not paying Miss Salem's way to Miss Utah right now, generous people in the community have been donating. Get your facts straight before you comment.
No one ever said the Jr. Miss program wasn't classy, its just strange that the city would pay $500 towards that program and not in support of their OWN queen.
The Miss Salem Contestants were blind-sided this year, they signed a contract saying they'd go to Miss Utah and then the contract was broke. So I give Miss Salem props for standing up for herself and the Miss America Organization.
