And, with a name like 'Salt Lake City Brown Berets', that group knows racism when it sees it.
Well done Sandstrom. Any counter to these immigration bills is simply an attempt by the liberals to condone the illegal immigrants and their crimes.
0 illegal immigrants in utah should be our goal!
give me a break. if you want to change the law, why not change it to make workers legal? so worried about "rewarding" people as if flipping burgers is like winning the lottery. give me a break. make them legal with the stroke of a pen. stop touting the union line of wage depression. free enterprise is the way to go.
Utah Deputy Attorney General Kirk Torgensen testified to the committee that he could "literally smell the fear" among some of the trafficked individuals he encountered during law enforcement operations.
What does fear smell like, Kirk? Is it minty?
From recent news reports I've heard it seems that the Federal government doesn't really want to be bothered with illegal immigration and is looking more and more to the states to devise their own methods of dealing with it. I would guess that each state is impacted differently by this issue, so maybe letting the states decide would be the best idea. Unfortunately, if the feds back out of all of this, they will take funding with them.
I have not commented on this issue so here goes. I strongly support Mr. Sandstrom's bill. To me, my US Citizenship is right up there with my God, my family, my Country and my freedom. Just because someone got in my Country illegally it does not mean that they can stay here. It does not mean that they can pay a bribe (fine) to the government and then stay. Even the existing system for immigration requires things that can actually assist the individual in functioning in our society like a grasp english, both written and spoken, US history, our constitution/freedom and responsibilities as a US Citizen. I served in Vietnam with non US Citizens who had joined the US Army as it was an expedient and legitimate way of gaing US Citizenship. My point, freedom is not free and many of our US Citizens have given chunks of their flesh and gobs of their blood for this Country and their citizenship. Do not disrespect what all of our citizens have done and the basic priniciples of our society. To those that say it is to expensive to enforce the laws-shame on you.
This is SMART LEGES.....sign it today!
There is no excuse....

Sandstrom For UTAH GOV!
I hope the attorney generals office has nose plugs. The fear from the legal citizens is growing. What laws will we choose next not to enforce?
Addressing the root reasons behind illegal immigration? It's a world wide problem. Most industrialized countries deport thousands each year including Mexico.
We addressed it once, we created NAFTA to further trade, and keep the people of Mexico home. We sent money and jobs, they sent people here illegally to send money home. The root of our problem is those who ignore our immigration laws.
I hope that this law will prove to be effective in getting rid of these illegals! I don't know how we can get rid of these liberal whiners.
Kudos to Rep. Sandstrom!
We've been needing legislation of this kind for several years now and the longer we've waited the worse the problem becomes and the harder it is to solve.
We need to all make sure we contact our legislators to let them know how strong we feel regarding this legislation.
The REAL TEST will come in January when the business interests will do EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER to get this defeated at the legislature.
I have only two minor/or major issues.
First, this must only be enforced only when in conjunction of a crime. Not jay walking.... but a crime. If you are not committing a crime, you don't need to be looking over your shoulder all the time. That includes stealing some one else's identity. But the fraud charge must come first, not you might be illegal so we will investigate you. Proof of fraud first.
Second, where is the penalty for the employers, the reason these people come here? There needs to be a clause that if an employer the has a business license to operate in this state is caught hiring illegals, they will lose that license. If you are not a business but hire someone you know to be illegal, you will be fined.
Unless you approach the problem through enforcement on both ends, then you do look like you are targeting only a single group. Illegal is illegal even for non-hispanics, apply the law equally to all.
With those in place, I have no issues. Apply the law equally and no one can complain.
It doesn't appear that Sandstrom is really pushing his legislative agenda in a comprehensive, non-partisan manner as has been reported earlier in the news media. This is a singular attempt to focus on a strong law enforcement approach without taking into consideration any consideration of other opinions that have been suggested. There is not carrot and stick approach. This is much more of a my way or the highway (back to Mexico) approach. Was the media confused about earlier efforts by legislators to develop comprehensive immigration legislation or was it a political tactic to confuse the public and media or did a compromise effort just fall apart and nobody is admitting to it or what is really going on?
KUTV has been conducting a poll for a week now. There have been 2,690 votes so far. Here is the breakdown:
Utahns who 100% support the bill - 74.3%
Utahns who say "NO" to the bill - 10.3%
It is time to support what the people want. Any legislator that opposes the State of Utah's attempts to enforce current U.S. Law in our state needs to be voted out. If our chief of police is unwilling to uphold the law, get rid of him too.
The people of Utah need to be heard! Get illegal immigrants out of our state.... NOW!
It is about time someone cared for the middle class of Utah. The crime, high taxes, loss of jobs while those from another country steal our tax dollars too buy expensive cars and wreak havoc on our neighborhoods. Enough is enough. Thank You Rep Sandstrom.
I support Rep. Sandstrom's bill. We also need to stop businesses from hiring illegals, which is a huge problem in our state. We can't even afford to educate and provide health care to our own citizens, and we certainly cannot afford to provide it for people who invade our state illegally.
Illegals need to go and the Governor, Chief of Police, and any politician who isn't prepared to support the will of the people needs to be voted out of office in November without further argument. We need to take back the state and the federal government. These people have lost touch, Herbert thinks he can pander to Hispanics for votes, Burbank doesn't want to enforce the law, and Luz Robles thinks she is the ambassador to Mexico. Let us send them all a message.
Is there a protest being planned against the bill? If there is, count me in on the demonstration.
Way to go Rep. Sandstrom!! Keep fighting the good fight! We support you!
I absolutely agree with this. Now, let's complete it by enacting a penalty for hiring illegals and taking away that drivers card. If they have no card, it will be a very easy method of figuring out who might be illegal. If they don't have a license, they need to prove they are here legally. Then, it won't matter what color their skin, hair or eyes are or how their accent does or does not sound. No racial profiling there!
