Chickens do not attract mice and rats. Mice and rats are attracted to a food and water source. Yes, a chicken feeder can be a feed source, but so can wild bird feeders. Are you going to ban wild bird feeders? Yes, a chicken waterer can be a water source, but so can potted plants on a back patio. Are you going to ban potted plants? Chickens do not attract predators. Predators are already there because there is already a food source there! Do some research people! I have more dog poop in my front yard from other neighbors dogs than they have chicken poop in their front yard from my chickens! I have more cat prints on my car from other neighbors cats than they have chicken prints on their car! I'm awake at 2:00am because of my neighbors barking dogs far more then they are awake a 2:00am from my sleeping hens! No, you don't need a rooster to have fresh eggs every morning! Do you know how many diseases cat carry? You need to put chickens into perspective!
Thanks,
Chicken Whisperer
Way to go WVC legislators and residents! Thank you for not allowing people to gain more political power, money and social status over you! The chicken issue is directly related to that and not because people NEED to raise chickens for whatever reasons! Agricultural zones are created for farm animals, not residential areas.
I have to agree with the Chicken Whisperer. Dogs and Cats are more of a health hazard than chickens. Dogs and cats cause more damage and are noisier than chickens also.
All I can say is that I have one more reason to NOT live in West Valley and not recommend it as a place to live. Besides all the crime, the people seem to be pretty closed minded if this is the way the council thinks. Maybe the two are related.
Wow. Some very ignorant people contributed to this decision. And since when are hillbillies the only ones that raise chickens. We have a couple neighbors who raise chickens in our neighborhood. Occasionally they'll get out, but otherwise they're no big deal. My kids really like chasing them around their yard. And they're not noisy animals (assuming there's no rooster, which you don't need for egg-laying hens).
As for the boa constrictor phobic lady, who cares what she uses the hens for? It's not like they're going to stop feeding their snake. It's a complete non-issue. Some animals eat other animals.
Does the boa-phobic lady think there's gonna be an outbreak of boa constrictors in Utah, because of chickens?
Why should any of this really matter? If people want chickens let them have chickens.
Animal/pet owners are all subject to regulation. As a dog owner, my pet must be leashed, registered with the city and kept quiet as to not disturb my neighbors. I think that people need to be given more credit. There will always be the few who ruin potential rights for the masses, but I think the majority of people try to do what's right. I'm personally not interested in owning chickens, but I'm not opposed to others owning them if they are cared for properly. I guess the decision has been made though!
This is a crying shame. A decision made on misinformation, lack of research and homework. I guess "ignorance is bliss". Parakeets, parrots, and other birds can get lice too. That is why there is dusting powder available and usually isn't a problem. Maybe any bird, indoor or out should be banned also. And bird feeders in backyards should be outlawed too. Your chances of getting a illness from a wild bird is greater than a domestic one. Dog and cats are farm animals, stink, some people are allergic, attract raccoons and skunks because of their food, spread disease, can get worms that can be spread to people, urinate and poop in others lawns, gardens, kids' sandboxes, scratch and bite, can carry rabies, keep one up at night fighting or barking, ruin property, so, those should go also. And Fish ponds or other water garden type thing city people like should not be allowed either. They attract cats, and raccoons, skunks, gather algae, stink and are a breeding ground for disease carrying mosquitos. Anyone up for a good case of West Nile?? I guess what they say about some city people is true. "Real ignorant and unwilling to change."
