Giving tax breaks for movie production is governmental irresponsibility at its worst. It is beyond comprehension that the government would want to bring this sort of influence to our community.
Modern movies are full of violence, profanity, and indiscriminant sexuality. These vices are directly contrary to Utah values. And yet, the government is using or tax dollars to finance production.
This next election, the voters should consider which politicians have supported this outrageous program. Any politician who supports this program should be thrown out of office.
The movie industry is big business, just as the companies that support Hill Air Force Base, technology and the medical field are. These tax incentives are post-performance based and not only boost our economy and bring in good-paying jobs, but promote the state as well as or better than other industries do. I should know--I've made a living at it here for over 20 years.
I intended to write a parody type comment about this issue but John Charity Spring said everything I would have said. Of course my comments would have been in jest.
I have to go back to a comment made by a friend of mine - "They're out there and they vote". Scary.
This article promotes the immorality of allowing government to use money forcibly taken from some to benefit select others. It claims this is acceptable because jobs are created.
The truth is that government can't create any job it doesn't first take away from the private sector through higher taxes. It does this so inefficiently that it probably takes away at least 2 jobs for every one it supposedly creates.
Bryan Kingsford on his moral high horse, talking down to the rest of us who watch movies and earn income from having a hotel that houses immoral Californians or restaurants that feed cast and crews that come to Utah. Utah has given little in tax incentives but earned $59 million from films in 2009. We elect our legislature who approves the carrots that bring jobs to Utah. Creating jobs in Utah is not immoral.
Government should have no role in taxation or creating jobs. Government should not even have the ability to educate or build roads, the private sector can do that 100%. The legislature should read the constitution and pray to the founding fathers.
Better to have tax cuts of any sort than tax increases or "subsidy payments."
Tax cuts spur economic activity, create jobs and actually increase the amount of money paid into the government.
Good program, keep it up. Especially as California is trying hard to drive all businesses out of their state with tax increases.
