What a great idea! I think the tight-ends ought to be next. That would be a great gathering as well. Sure hope Sark can find a way to take part at half-time but it would be understandable if he can't.
Man... I wish I could be there for this event. I think it is outstanding that Giff is organizing all of this. Hats off to him for wanting not only to make it a special place for him, but for future BYU QBs. I would love to know ahead of time what they plan to auction off, I would also suggest that they have the general BYU athletics hold their stuff in reserve at the auction as well.
Maybe Alex Smith and Brian Johnson could do the same up on the hill. Heck, a #1 NFL bust and a "didn't make it to the NFL at all" guy as Yewtah's two most famous QBs ought to rake in the donations hadn't they?
I want to see McMahon's take his place in the BYU hall of fame. More than any other QB, he put this program on the map.
Sark has stated that if his team is down at the half he will be with them in the locker room. He is one of my favorites, and was the QB when I was there. I hope not to see him at halftime.
Good stuff. Loved the article & the effort of Nielsen. I'm coming in from San Diego for the game on the 3rd. Can't wait for half-time!! I was at the Nat'l Championship game with my newlywed wife and remember/attended many of the Holiday Bowls of the past. I'm still happily married 26 years later, and this Y QB legacy will live on forever. Hopefully, in some way, Beck and Hall can add to it! Go Cougs!
Upon reading the article again and thinking back on the great QB's I remember growing up, how about Marc Wilson? He was a first team consensu All American. Curious why his name isn't listed?
@ JustStatingTheObvious
The millions BYU got from Alex Smith's and Brian Johnson's BCS victories is more than the total goal the school hopes to raise from the entire fund raiser. So keep you snide remarks to yourself and just say thank you sir, may I have another.
I can't wait until BYU prays that Utah will play them to help improve BYU's strength of schedule.
Jim McMahon should be in the BYU Hall of Fame. Just because he was critical of his time there, doesn't mean he hasn't earned it through his athletic accomplishments.
I bet Giff is wondering what Mcmahon will bring to auction off!
Might be a case a bud.
I have to admit that there is plenty of history at the Y in football. It is always good take a look back at your history, but that's all it is.. HISTORY.
I'm sure Sark will be out there at halftime when they are up on byu by atleast a couple TDs.
@so. cal reader - Marc Wilson's name is listed - but just barely. He hasn't had as high a profile as the others but was certainly a great (college) QB. I remember one game in the '79 season against SDSU where 3 of his first 4 completions went for touchdowns.
I hope the fans show their appreciation for Jim McMahon above the rest - as an athlete, competitor, leader, and quarterback he was uncanny. Who can forget his running, left footed punt against Hawaii? Oh wait - there may have been one or two plays even more memorable - wasn't there some kind of a bowl game thingie? C'mon BYU - find a way to forgive, and put him in the Hall of Fame.

Always the positive spin on everything. It's way even BYU grads, like me, are sick of BYU fans. Glad to see the great QBs from the past, hope Washington beats the Y, maybe the Y fans could develop a better sense of propriety sometime in their sheltered lives.
It must be disappointing for these once great quarterbacks to see how far the Ute's football program has come since they last played at BYU and how little BYU's program has achieved.

If you don't have anything nice to say... don't
I think you have to be a graduate to be in BYU's Hall of Fame, and I don't think McMahon graduated. That said, the best of the best. Kyle Whittingham said McMahon is the best he's ever seen.
The only reason Jim McMahon isn't in the BYU Hall of Fame is that he has never graduated. Once he finishes those last few hours of course work he's in. It has nothing to do with anything he has said or his attitude. BYU would love to induct him but one of the requirements is graduation.
A casual fan, or somebody unfamiliar with BYU football, might ask, "How so many great quarterbacks in one program?"
The common denominator, of course, is the genius and motivational power of LaVell Edwards.
I've never been a rabid BYU fan, but I've had a deep admiration of Brother LaVell since early-on in the QB rotation. He probably influenced the game of college football more than any other individual in the last 50 years. I'm glad he's being included in the celebration.
It has nothing to do with things McMahon said or did. It is what he didn't do. He is 9 credits short of graduation (so I hear). That is 3 classes he could take online, and never have to set foot on campus until he comes for his induction ceremony. He doesn't care to complete the courses. (He said so himself) BYU is not going to change the rules for one player, even if he is one of the best at BYU to play this position.
@ersorenson - I'm with you, a BYU grad and, at least in my case, a Utah fan. I like the BYU athletic programs and generally like the coaches. But the fans........
Just Stating, try to have something useful to say. This article is not about Utah and you are embarassing the rest of us.
Come on ersorenson, surely you have more character than to allow the least common denominators to disuade you from the ranks of the Y faithful. Have some backbone man!
