The Republican leadership just doesn't get it, even after scandals keep surfacing. This is the result of not being afraid of the voters. Arrogance has replaced public service.
There is nothing ethical about the "ethics" initiative. It is a power grab at best.
I am dismayed that some state Republicans have yet to realize that this ethics initiative is good for Republicans. It protects against unethical behavior, including fraud, self-serving interests, and back-room deals.
I believe that good Republicans fight against corruption and promote fair and ethical government promoting honesty and safeguarding against abuse of political power.
While some local Republican leaders still suggest staus quo is best, they ignore the potential to fix what is becoming an increasingly widespread problem of unethical behavior, and abuse of power in government.
It is time to make a postive change. It is high time for accountability in government! This is the message the Republican party should represent. This is what Utah voters deserve and expect!
Amazing. Cannon got something right. Kudos to him.
Don't know, it made me wonder if maybe I was wrong in supporting the ethics measure!
I applaud Cannon for supporting this initiative. Although incumbent legislators have created their own ethics legislation, it does not contain any campaign finance reform, which the citizen's initiative does. Utah is one of only four states in the nation that doesn't even have caps in place on campaign contributions. Corporations and special interest groups can contribute unlimited amounts of money to legislators, who are allowed to spend that money on personal expenses. Finally, the last session began with the Senate majority leader (a Republican) resigning because he was caught driving drunk, and ended with the House majority leader (a Republican) resigning because he was naked in a hot tub with a 15 year old girl whom he paid off to keep quiet. We clearly need some change!
An atta boy to Chris Cannon for recognizing the level of corruption Utah's lax ethics laws have spawned. Utah is near the bottom of the heap in restraining the corrupting influence of corporate gifts, perks, and employment.
Something must be done, and the Legislature has shown us they will not do it themselves. In fact they have shown us they will oppose it at every turn.
